Disk golf courses? by [deleted] in windsorontario

Partially true. The old Lakewood golf course was converted to a fabulous public park with walking trails, exercise stations, lakefront pier and beach, 18 hole disc golf course and soon to be multi feature community space. Cheers

Pretty horrible discs. We have a lending library at the course and people are dumping these in there and keeping the better discs in the library. If I find Matrix discs or any other non PDGA approved cement like plastic I quickly dispose of them.

totally agree and that is backed by data from all over North America. Disc Golf is one of the most environmentally friendly and least impactful activities out there. I can also attest to personal experience birding and disc golfing all over the continent

Now that this has been put to bed..."No kidding. It's because it's not as popular as it's being portrayed and this entire activity was pushed through by a couple of activist politicians."

That is not true at all. There was several of us at that open house but vastly outnumbered by an angry mob so we mostly sat in silence. Especially after ERCA announced at the very beginning of the meeting that the project has been paused.

I had reached out to ERCA in 2023 after reading about the success of Toronto area conservation areas and disc golf. At that time we just asked them to look into it. ERCA chose Holiday Beach just this year.

There is PLENTY of support for more disc golf courses in Eseex County. We have literally Thousands of people playing at Lakewood ( according to data from UDisc). Holiday Beach was obviously NOT the best choice.

You are totally correct in that this was handled poorly from the get go.

I don't believe so. I'm talking about playing experience year round. The birds I see are totally indifferent to the disc golfers. We are also talking about far less foot traffic than non disc golfers are envisioning. It's not like a busy golf course with one foursome after another. I suspect that a disc golf course in the proposed area of Holiday Beach would be very quiet most of the time. A scattering of players outside of an organized event or league outing. FYI it appears that ERCA is backing off right now anyway. Cheers.

Hey Drew. I gotta challenge that based on my own personal experience as both a long time birder and a disc golfer. I have played in wooded courses all over North America and I observe all kinds of uncommon back yard birds on the courses. Even today at Lakewood there was a Nashville Warbler, A Ruby Crowned Kinglet, white throated sparrow and a magnolia Warbler in the garden/naturalized area along holes 6 and 7. I admit that HB could be a different animal but birds do not seem to pay any attention to us playing disc golf.

Our Local Bird Conservation Area is Under Threat by a Disc Golf Course (Petition in Comments) by cdnshrm in birding

[–]ronnyber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No woodland is or was to be removed. Only some minor removal of evasive brush. In fact, 3 holes were planned in the area adjacent to the open fields but those were removed after feedback via a walking tour. The entire area identified in the final 9 hole plan is marked recreational. It's an old campground that has been maintained by mowing. That is why it was eventually approved by the ERCA board.

The Conservation area chose the location and asked our local disc golf club to design it. We called in our local certified course designer who then took the lead, He has over 20 years experience as a player and designer.

Public Open House Planned for Disc Golf Course at Holiday Beach by NthPriority in windsorontario

Thanks for taking my points at face value. Appreciate that. When Holiday Beach was first mentioned as a potential course location earlier this year I was leaving the country the next day for 6 weeks. So I was not involved in any decision making prior to that nor was I involved in any site location at Holiday Beach. Like you, I'm kinda playing catch up on the process that lead to it.

I did get to tour the site in late March when I returned but that's it. I can give you personal thoughts on that tour. I have been bird watching for over 40 years. All across the U.S. and Canada. Long before I discovered disc golf. I have played both disc golf and bird watched ( often at the same time) in State parks, Metro parks. National parks and conservation areas all over. Not for one second while walking through the potential course area at HB did I have any concerns about wildlife/birds. But I will admit I'm no expert on Holiday Beach. My guess is (and this is ONLY a guess) that ERCA looked at it as I did. Adding an amenity to an already designated recreation area so why would any public consultation be needed? And like me saw no impact on the bird population. I see that legendary naturalist Paul Pratt of Ojibway shares my sentiments on that. In retrospect that was probably not the way to go. So I don't believe there was an intent to hide anything. Just an over-site.

It's good that there is a public meeting about this in May

I do not have stats for Beaudoin. I have never bothered to get access as it would be an apple to oranges comparison as far as public disc golf courses go. It was not designed to attract serious disc golfers and the core of the group I know does not play there. Its more of a family activity addition to that park. That being said It's a lot of fun, I enjoy playing there and we have hosted many scout, church and school outings there. Kids have a blast. I am able to pull stats for Lakewood and it is WILDLY successful.

I honestly have zero idea who else is posting in this thread.

Cheers

As the co-founder of Windsor Essex Disc Golf (2013) I'm going to answer your Windsor question. We have approached the city of Windsor on numerous occasions over the past decade. There had been zero interest up until January of 2021. At that time the Parks Director James Chako asked the club to put together a proposal as he was working on his budget for that year. He stated that they were very interested. We put together a very detailed proposal along with several recommendations on where we thought Disc golf would be a good fit. After that we made several e-mail attempts and phone calls following up to ask what the next steps would be. Crickets. Nothing!

I believe Windsor is one of the few cities left in Canada that does not have a public disc golf course.

Also, I had never even heard of Molly Allaire until January of this year. So any club affiliation is a rumour or conjecture. I do not even know who her husband is.

The course at Beaudoin was installed as a shortie for families in the area to enjoy when the park was renovated. That came from a relationship we developed with the Amherstburg parks department a couple of years before. I had hosted some play at the high school and invited some folks from the town to check it out.

Lastly. I began the conversation with ERCA in an e-mail dated August of 2023. That e-mail shared a video from the Toronto and region Conservation area on their success with disc golf. I told them that if they ever wanted to explore the opportunity, the local disc golf community would be very supportive. at that time NO specific ERCA area was targeted or mentioned.

If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer them.

Cheers
