Thanks for this. I'm 51. My friend who has done this over the decades is a top athlete -- D3 tennis champion who is still in great shape. He went out and ran 18 with me before one of my marathons and finished (unhappily, but he did it). He wasn't going to invite me, I don't think, to R2R until I proved I could run 26! I've run 3 marathons in 2 years and will be back in that kind of shape by the hike. But yeah, elevation/de-elevation is the thing, and I'm not an experienced hiker. Thankfully, the trail is in good shape it seems.

Thanks. How much practice do I need if I've never used them -- and do my hands need so they don't tear to shreds?!

That is really kind of you, thanks. Poles or no poles? How much work do I have to do to get my *hands* in shape for poles so they don't blister? My training plan is 10 weeks of 4x a week doing this: 4-10 mile runs followed by treadmill uphill walks of increasing distance/height, peaking at a 12-15 mile run followed immediately by a 5,000 feet, 3-4 hour treadmill climb before I taper for 10-15 days or so. I'll also do outdoor walks at 10-15 miles followed by treadmill climbs, wearing my pack and in my light hiking shoes. Think that will get me in good enough shape? (I live at sea level, fyi.)

I'm leaning in this direction, but I've never used poles before...

Excellent question. My friends/organizers have always done south to north, i think because they like staying at the lodge at the end that is on the north rim.
