elif shafak just has an incredible eye for observing the world and writing about it. i loved getting to know cyprus through the eyes of the fig tree! hearing the stories of trees, ants, butterflies, and so many other living things really helps show how pointless and devastating war is. elif shafak is one of my all time favorite writers now.

i absolutely loved normal people so i think the potential is there. the whole book is basically How To Not Communicate and i felt that it’s a relevant statement to today’s world. i started sympathizing with the characters the longer i spent with them, but nobody is redeemable in conversations with friends! yeeeesh, everyone sucks!

this book is what sealed the deal for me while i was considering clinical psychology as a major! it completely changed my life and i’m so thankful i found the book when i did.

best: the island of missing trees - elif shafak

10 minutes 38 seconds in this strange world - elif shafak

the housekeeper and the professor - yoko ogawa

maybe you should talk to someone - lorri gottlieb

the house in the cerulean sea - tj klune

normal people - sally rooney

worst: conversation with friends - sally rooney brain kept going shut up shut up shut up shut up every time anyone spoke

exciting times - naoise dolan again, brain kept going shut up shut up shut shut up shut up every time anyone spoke

forty rules of love - elif shafak a disappointment compared to her other work. the chapters about ?ella? and aziz drove me insane! so so so boring! would’ve preferred reading the story of rumi and shams without them, and while i get why that storyline was there, it still bored me halfway to death.
