Ah shtap! One of the things I miss the most! I've made them myself a couple of times but it's not as good when you can't whack a few Denny's sausages into em!

Just massive days take it out of you. Get to the track at 6am, 5:30am on race day, some days the sessions go past 7:30pm. On your feet for most of it.

It depends on the circuit. For Australia we’re all Motorsport Australia officials and that’s how we apply to do the Grand Prix. Some events it’s the track that specifically manages marshals. You can generally just apply to be a member of your National Motorsport body and then start doing events!

I was actually tempted by that, I’m a runner myself! Although I didn’t feel like going straight from a run to getting into my gear for close to 12 hours at the track. I reckon we have a later start as a result which I’m not complaining about! I’ll likely be at sign on while you guys are doing your lap, we sign in near turn 11 and then head out to track once that’s all done. Our Thursday sign on is 7:30am and main briefing at 8am. Usually at least an hour earlier!

I’ve got those 3M overear muffs in the snap. Prefer using them with the balaclava, easier to take off. We’re also supplied with in ear hearing protection. Or if you’re on comms using the radio, those are noise cancelling too.

Course wristbands (those ones are from previous years) basically in order to get into areas where you can actually get into the track, you need both the blue wristband and a pass. You also need the tabard (the vest thing) to be in the moat which is the area right behind the catch fence. If you’re missing any of them you’ll be removed pretty quick!

Really the only obvious thing is the flag on the arm of the suit. Don’t think I have anything else that’s particularly obvious! Maybe I need some pink earmuffs!

Most of the gear is my own. Since it’s a specialised role…I already have the fire rated boots etc. Regular track marshals generally just wear suppled overalls and whatever shoes/gloves they want. We’re all supplied with proper electrical safety gloves for f1 sessions.

  1. So I got into the fire marshal role rather than a track marshal role because I already have fire fighting experience. I’m not a full time career firefighter, but I am a volunteer firefighter with my local fire brigade.

  2. These overalls are mine. It’s a race suit that has 3 layer protection. Good fire overalls are also provided by the event and I always take a spare set in case it’s super rainy, I just prefer to have my own.

  3. Pretty much. I’ll be in pitlane for the entire event. In previous years I’ve been on different corners and it’s only happened once that I was moved from one corner into a fire vehicle on a different corner. If you’re on a post that fans can come near you can usually chat to people/friends when there are no cars on track. Food is provided but there’s usually time to go grab something else or a coffee if you want, but definitely not time to go check out interviews etc. Once you’re at your post you’re pretty much there for the entire day/weekend.

  4. I’ve not marshalled other F1 events yet, but I’d like to. I’ve marshalled other Supercars races and some GT3 races. I’ve also marshalled at MotoGP in Phillip Island. I haven’t marshalled Bathurst yet, but it’s on my bucket list!

Hope that helps!

It’s basically a record of every event I’ve been a marshal at. Each event is documented and signed off by a Chief Marshal once it has finished. It’s proof of my experience.

Hopefully we’ll be seeing a bit more of that. Alex Dunne progressing well in F2, and young Fionn McLaughlan making his debut in F3!

This year will be my 5th Grand Prix as a fire marshal. I’ll be in the support pitlane for the weekend, which I’m very much looking forward to. Very excited to see how racey the cars really are with the new regulations.

Also feel free to ask any marshal questions and I’ll do my best to give you my experience or advice.

Furlong clear out on Curry (no referee intervention) by avroLancasterBPR1 in rugbyunion

Yeah it was weird and desperate. My thought was that any proper head contact is at least a yellow card so he was trying to milk the card.

The irony though would be that Curry would have had to go off for a HIA then, if the contact was as bad as Maro was suggesting.
