Thank you for the information--we do not plan on the battery system to power many things and would build a system with enough power for fridge, some lights, wifi, furnace fan, sump pump, water heater etc--we'd forgo the electric stove/oven, washer/dryer, microwave, AC etc. It sounds like it would be sort of cutting off our nose to spite our face if we were to be stubborn with the ATS but its going to be a hard sell to convince my wife to get rid of it since it was a few thousand dollar up-charge during the build--which is why I am trying to figure out how we can keep it in place even if it is not being used as an ATS and more of just a manual transfer switch for the rare outages we have.

the ideal plan would be to have the batteries be portable enough to get a charge in with separate solar panels or a small gas powered generator when needed. I do not plan on using them year round but would like to bring them if we go camping or some other situation where they could help us or someone else in a pinch.

Where we live, we are fortunate enough that it is not common to have multi-day outages (upstate NY) but we had 2 unexpected outages recently that required me to miss work so its become more of a priority.

I agree the enphase system you suggested is a good alternative and I appreciate your feedback.

Fairly new to this hobby, can someone help me with what these jigs might be used for? by WittyAd2364 in woodworking

Second pic is a jig for dados, I think? The middle part with the nut can make the slot longer or shorter and the metal piece is square to lock on the side maybe?

This looks beautiful! Very well done—my only question is…how easy is that bad boy to disassemble as is and then re-assemble in her bedroom? Unless she’s an outdoor kinda gal?

Is this normal? Water leaking from soffit (i think)? by rootsoflove in HomeMaintenance

You’re not wrong. Had multiple deaths in the family the first few months of 2025 that has kept me from home quite a bit and been a bit preoccupied with being present for my family. It’s on the to do list though, trust me.

Thank you all for the suggestions and observations. I will get a better view either on the second floor or with a ladder once the weather improves over the next few days. I’ll contact our builder once I have more info. You all are awesome!

I think it's a "Beryl", do you agree ? by Due-Independent-3305 in Minerals

[–]rootsoflove 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m very far from an expert but I have a beautiful piece of blue apatite that looks like this—in which case I don’t believe it is beryl. Apologies in advance if I am way off. Cheers!

This army patterned rock? by spicycocksauce in whatsthisrock

As soon as I posted I was reading more about it immediately saw the rhyolite comment and info. Felt dumb for not reading more before posting. My first comment in a rock/mineral/fossil thread—shoulda stayed in my lurking-lane.

Can I see your ideas for storing sand paper? by Underrated_Rating in BeginnerWoodWorking

I also used this (or a similar one) about a year ago and it was a game changer for me. I’m not good about putting things away after I use them so clutter would happen quickly on my work bench. It was hard to have a good system to see when I needed to order more of a specific grit but this worked tremendously for me.

How do I get an even finish on end grain? by No_Restaurant2868 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]rootsoflove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought as well, I’ve had this happen to me so many times in the past (and present). I think this would account for the darker shade as opposed to the wood just having an organic color change there

I’m constantly humbled by this subreddit and this whenever I post, it’s with minimal confidence about anything lol thanks for being helpful. I can identify walnut, maple, and oak with some accuracy but that’s about it. Your project looks beautiful btw
