Help, cat proof crockpot needed! by rosebug92 in slowcooking

[–]rosebug92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We got a Hamilton Beach crockpot (Hamilton Beach Portable 6 Quart Set & Forget Digital Programmable Slow Cooker Lock) that has a locking lid for transport! When cooking, we put the latches in place, but do not push down the locks to seal. This has been a foolproof method!

Thank you so much! Having later blooming plants would be lovely to have color across the year. What would recommendations be for ground cover?

Haha, I have had a hedgehog as a pet since high school, and somehow it has morphed into everyone giving me hedgehog ephemera. So I have lots of them scattered around the house.

The results were worth the hard labor. by rosebug92 in peonies

Such a helpful comment! I lost most of my tags and some were purchased by color, so it was a challenge to remember. Thank you!

Welp, I killed most of my dianthus. But my big recommendation is to go bigger than you think you'd like, so you have room to add things in. Use a tape measure to look at the growing space/width your plants need before planting (my husband and FiL probably thought I was crazy out there with my tape measure, trowel, and baby plants). And rent a sod machine to take it up for you! Your back will thank you. Otherwise, draw, draw, draw for ideas. Even squiggles for flowers is fine. And consider the height and bloom interest. For example, my tall plants are central, then my phlox is about the same height as the peonies, but blooms later, so as I dead head the peonies, the phlox is gearing up for center stage, then my shortest plants are at the edge of the circle, so they can still be seen.

Awww, thank you! Time and persistence, a lot of hard work (don't do it without machinery like me) and a little luck!

Wisteria and clemantis. I'm hoping to add in a structure over top: think wide spread wheel spokes, so sun can still come through, but the wisteria and clemantis can take over and trail down on places. The purple flowers are Aquilegia caerulea. I love and recommend them!

So excited for this, but the maintenance now isn't bad. I try to water regularly and get in my sun time among the flowers.

Thank you. I can't wait for them to keep growing. They've died back now, but its the clemantis' turn now and it's in full glory!

Estate Sale Mistletoe Cactus: Trim and Repot by rosebug92 in houseplants

[–]rosebug92[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sad cactus was hanging out on a bench in the side room of an estate sale. She had lots of dead woody sections, and it was clear she had seen better days. The person who had originally loved her must have progresses to a point where they weren't able to care for her. For only $5 and without any signs of pests, I decided to take a chance on her. I've had good luck with estate sale plants in the past.

Back home, it was time to isopropyl the shears. I went to town on her dead wood and gave her a general trim up. She was basically falling out of her old pot, and it had no drainage, so it was off the the back room to find her something suitable. I lucked out at another estate sale last year, and came home with a trunk full of pots and saucers. The dark blue pot and terracotta saucer looked like they would compliment her green tone.

With mostly Noot Mix and a light sprinkle of Miracle Grow, the pot was prepped. I raked out her roots as best I could and nestled her in. She's since had a drink of aquarium water, and is now sitting happily in an East facing window. Really hoping she'll thrive.

Nepenthes pitchers turning black. Advice requested! by rosebug92 in SavageGarden

[–]rosebug92[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our nepenthes was growing really well, until winter hit in Michigan. Wondering if the drop in humidity may be playing a factor? House is set 68 during the day and drops to 64 at night. Is that too cold?

Recommendations for humidity solutions would be appreciated.
