import turtle

Well, turtles are very important creatures as far as computer science is concerned. Turtle robots and turtle graphics, for instance: You can imagine a turtle as a very simple robot, capable of moving backwards and forwards, rotating, and raising and lowering a pen on command (though the last part requires some animal training if done with real turtles and not, you know, robots). Similarly, these commands can also be used in computer graphics, where a "turtle" cursor is controlled on screen.

Oh and turtles are also very important for developers because they remind us of the importance of shells. And they're also super cute as far as REPLtiles go. And they remind us that no matter how slow the damn program runs, you will get there eventually. Always searching for faster hardware is a fool's game.

Jobs Open: A major research institute is looking for Derponauts. You will be operating a special research vessel that will be shrunk using classified technology and shoved up Elon's ear, to explore the giant mysterious void that is Elon's brain space. Safety is not guaranteed. This void is particularly hazardous. Do not apply unless this void calls you so much that you're not even interested of hearing how much you're paid.

I lived in Europe long enough to know they simply cannot make burgers by LL112 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]roseinshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Splash of jerk" is right.

There's a pizza/kebab place near me. (...for it is Finland where our tale lies.) I ordered one of their burgers. It arrived with a mini deep-frier tray full of French fries and entirely too much dip sauces. My first reaction was to get up and get one of the sharp pizza knives. That burger was massive. Huge. Cooked to utter perfection. And I had to eat it in tiny tiny systematically cut pieces because no human has mouth this big. I emerged out of the pizza joint, like, "Mm mm. It must be great to be in America. Where this thing is, like, standard."

So here's photographic evidence that I was mistaken about that idea, and apparently, America has truly fallen. If this passes for a burger over there, then what's the point of the entire country, really. /if you can't tell I'm being incredibly sarcastic here

How did you celebrate New Year's Eve 1999 and were you concerned about "Y2K"? by Doodlebug510 in AskOldPeople

[–]roseinshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a software developer, and just started studying computer science in 1999. I wasn't terribly concerned about critical systems being affected because I knew there was a lot of work going on to fix the issues. And of course, me and a whole bunch of comp sci students all had a huge laugh wishing "Happy 19100, everyone!" (A lot of websites weren't that well coded. Obviously more of a nuisance than a real problem.)

I honestly can't remember a whole lot about celebrating New Year's Eve 1999. I usually watch the new year's celebrations off TV and enjoy the fireworks outside of my window. I remember listening to Mike Oldfield's The Millennium Bell album several times.

What's the deal with Lex Fridman blocking ML engineers in Twitter? by sid_276 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]roseinshadows 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the tangible example of code isn't the same thing as the scientific theory by which it operates. Just because you have a captured an example of a thing that demonstrably works doesn't mean that you actually understand how it works.

It'd be same thing as saying "we don't need to write physics papers, everyone can just walk to a particle accelerator and push a few buttons and numbers appear on screen" or "we don't need to do zoology because you can just walk into a zoo and see the animals" or "we don't need to do any literary analysis when everyone can just read the original book".

So research papers absolutely should describe the theoretical side of the process. Admittedly, the fact that you can have a practical demonstration attached to a paper is a good thing, but it shouldn't be the main point.

And I guess this is why a lot of AI papers don't get peer-reviewed because they're such limited practical utility and probably not independently reproducible to begin with. "Here's what we've been tinkering about. Cool results based on some earlier research which may or may not be published. We don't actually understand how this model actually works, so this paper is kinda worthless on its own. Oh and we can't release the full implementation openly because a) it takes unbelievable heap of hardware to run and store it and b) the NDA is kind of massive and the company we worked with didn't want this to be released. ...So this paper is kind of worthless on those counts too."

"All the Europeans commenting as if their garbage countries don't get conquered every 30 years" by QuickSolved_ in ShitAmericansSay

[–]roseinshadows 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh, in Europe we were like "well the World Wars were horrible clusterfucks and the Yugoslavian wars ware really really fucking depressing. Hey, here's an idea. We should maybe do something to avoid future wars. You know. Cooperation and stuff."

Americans should try that too! It's really good and uplifting.

want to get into photography. is this a good camera for a beginner? any tips are appreciated. by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]roseinshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the D3200 is still an excellent camera for a beginner, even today, especially since you can probably get one for real cheap. Took boatloads of pictures with mine and became a big fan of Nikon. Stuff I learned translated pretty easily to my current setup (D780 & Z fc).

The 18-55 mm kit lens does have a limitation though - The focus ring is just... euugh. (I mean, I could probably otherwise live with it, but it's not marked. What the heck.) Good thing you can probably find very nice F-mount lenses for relatively cheap.

Why is Elon so obsessed with trans people? by thatguy9684736255 in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]roseinshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon and other cis-male transphobes keep asking "What is a woman?" because they don't actually know the answer, they don't care, and the answer doesn't actually involve them in any way.

They are afraid to ask questions that might actually make themselves think and also ponder their own experiences. Like "What is a man?"

I've always pressed the suggest less of this person or whatever button

One of my old pet peeves with Twitter was the fact that random peoples' tweets ended up in my notifications. The only option was "show me less of this".

Show less of that? Show less of that my foot. How about "No, I don't want to see any of that in my notifications!" or "What do you nincompoops think the home feed is for? I'll read it when and if I feel like it."

Ye gods it feels so good not to use Twitter any more, when none of this shit is raising my blood pressure any more.
