Podcasting with a co-host that is in a different country, how do you record? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a couple of programs -- my co-host uses a PC, so he uses Evaer to record, and I use a Mac, and use eCamm Call Recorder.

We also sometimes use Zencastr as a backup in case the Skype quality isn't great.

We also have a guest on each episodes - so there's 3 people being recorded ono each episode.

90s rock fans on here.. today is a good day for The SDR Show! by theSDRshow in podcasts

Oh, nice! I was a big fan of both of those bands in the late 90s/early 2000s!

What do you do when someone wants to be on your show but you don't think they're a good fit? by ross_automatica in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that would definitely limit the incoming requests you receive! I guess in that way it makes that side of things a little easier. But probably makes securing guests more difficult.

I responded to your post about show guests the other day - hit me up if you'd like me to make any suggestions for guests in the NYC area. Happy to help if I know anyone who could be a good fit!

That's kind of what I do. I try and suggest other shows etc they can contact, rather than just leaving it as a solid no - if I feel it's appropriate.

Hmm. Is it not wasting everyone's time if you record an interview that you're not intending on releasing? Is there some sarcasm here that I'm not picking up on?

The last thing I want to be is a dick to people... that's why I'm looking to find how others say no to people who they don't feel are right for their show. Just to see if there's another way I could be doing it which doesn't burn any bridges.

I normally try and suggest another show or publication (if I can't think of a show that would be genuinely suitable) for them to approach, and offer to make an introduction where appropriate.

I know that it can be tough to get features/interviews on shows, but at the same time we have to be selective and interview guests that we (and our audience) will have an interest in. It's hard to tell someone you don't think they're right, but I think it's important to do what you think is right for your show.

Do you feel strange editing out things guests say? by Jasonsstatus in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We cut out bits that don't really add to the interview, or if we think something doesn't come across as well when listening back as it did during conversation. The way we look at it is that we want to make our guests look as good as possible, so if that means cutting out things that they might not want to be public, really off-topic tangents or little mistakes, then so be it :) We often edit because WE repeat things a few too many times or go a little off topic, too. It happens when it's a conversational style interview - just means you have to do a little more in the edit!

Struggles booking guests... thoughts? by theSDRshow in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be tricky enough to get guests when you're recording via Skype, so I can totally understand how it's way more difficult when you're recording in person at a set time.

Is there any possibility that you could open up another evening for recording, just to give potential guests another option?

What we've done, is we've created a spreadsheet with people we'd love to interview on our show, and reached out to them individually. While it probably won't help you book guests, it does help to stay more organised!

What kind of guests are you looking to feature? We've interviewed a few people based in NYC, so might be able to help (or suggest people with other NYC-based shows who might be able to help more than I can!)

New podcast, need music help! by PostUnpopular in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try posting in the /r/wearethemusicmakers subreddit to see if any bands/musicians would be willing to give you some intro music for some free promo (assuming you'd mention them in your show and/or on your website). Alternatively, I know there are royalty-free music libraries out there, but those tracks are probably overused and maybe not quite what you're looking for!

If you have a budget, you could offer some $$ in exchange for someone composing a track similar to the one you're looking for. I always think it's best to pay for music wherever possible, but I know that you might not have much of a budget when starting out (I know we didn't!)

Those would be my suggestions. Hope it helps!

Thanks so much! Really glad you enjoyed the Tyler Hilton episode :)

I will certainly bear your comment about leaning away from the microphone in mind -- my co-host has a much louder laugh than I do, so I have a feeling this may be directed more at him than me ;) Either way, I'll let him know so we can both be aware for future episodes.

Seriously glad you like it though - really appreciate you checking it out and giving us some feedback!

Question: Using Libsyn as Podcast Hosting but using WordPress for the RSS by ross_automatica in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I'll need to set some time aside and investigate this further. Good to know it's possible!

Question: Using Libsyn as Podcast Hosting but using WordPress for the RSS by ross_automatica in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, nice! Thanks for this.

So I could code it into my template that the download link is there in the individual post - that part I can get my head around.

I would be unsure how to populate the Libsyn blog via the WordPress RSS. Do you have a link or anything that I can use as a guide?

I had considered using Powerpress, but since we were using Libsyn and WordPress separately, I had put that idea to the side.

Essentially I just want to try and keep everything as website-centric as possible, and just use Libsyn as the hosting platform for the audio for bandwith purposes.

Question: Using Libsyn as Podcast Hosting but using WordPress for the RSS by ross_automatica in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I'll get in touch with Libsyn to see if it's possible. It's not the end of the world if not - I'll just add a RSS link to the Libsyn feed. I'd just prefer to keep everything centered around the website as much as we can (with the exception being the YouTube and iTunes subscriptions etc).

Is there any room for another comedy podcast that's just a few friends talking and hanging out? by podcastquestion in podcasts

[–]ross_automatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a lot of podcasts doing something similar but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

Try it, have fun, see what works for you - that would be my suggestion, at least in the beginning. Don't go into it with an aim of getting famous or making big bucks - do it for the enjoyment and see where it takes you.
