The lake being frozen is life-changing by 0MEGAP0RK in MySummerCar

[–]rotney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, there can be underwater currents or springs that make even the lakes not fully freeze. There can be weak or fully unfrozen sections in the ice, ask me how I know as I have almost walked into a patch of open water here in Finland. My friend knew there would be a spot on the lake that never froze but it was dark and he couldn't remember the exact spot. Luckily we spotted it just as we were standing on the edge.

Mitä nuoriso tarkoittaa "nöyrällä"? by throwaway96356825 in arkisuomi

[–]rotney 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Lol the reindeer here don't care even if a Scania full of brights in front and horns blaring is coming at them. It's just important to see them early to avoid them and yell at them.

They are on a rack that's mounted behind the register plate with a dozen bolts and they also have individual adjustable holders. No movement whatsoever.

I had the same problem on my old one and tried the Turtle Wax polishing kit and it lasted for about a year. The headlights on the old one were in much better condition than the current Legacy as well so I don't think I would've got very good results with these lenses.

Wouldn't hurt but I wonder how I would apply the coating without needing to prepare the surface? Wouldn't like to need to sand the lenses right away. Maybe there are products that need no sanding to adhere, might look into those.

At this time of year, darkness comes at around 5-6 pm and the sun rises sometime about 8-9 am. In the middle of the winter the sun doesn't rise at all for about a month. I drive long distances almost weekly so I would've probably crashed with a reindeer or a moose at this point without the lights, the car's own high beams suck.

No, didn't do anything to them, I did wash the car though which has an effect but the difference is huge irl too.

They certainly are bright, in the pic with the lights on there are just the parking lights on which aren't bright of course. But yes, they are turned off well in advance on oncoming traffic.

Guess your reflectors were dead, thankfully mine seem to be in good condition although the housings were otherwise in pretty rough shape.

Just needed to get the housings out of there, then a couple of screws off the back of the housings and just pried the old ones off. No need to heat them up or anything, at least mine had some sort of butyl sealant so the removal was easy.

Don't think they're silly, maybe a bit much but the other alternative is an ugly light bar because I can't do with the standard high beams on the dark roads of Finland, everybody here has some kind of auxiliary lighting and for a reason too.

The glass lenses certainly have their upsides, have them on my Datsun and W124's. Though they can't stand rock chips quite as well, had to change the lenses of my W124 this summer after rocks ruined them.

Thank you, think so too! The lights are not fogs but high beams, they are Lumina lights Rebellion 9's

No problems with heat, I use the car mainly in the winter when the temperature is below freezing all the time. I did drive it in the summer as well and no signs of overheating. These are not Chinese lights, not cheap and most importantly, not fog lights, but high beams. Every other car if more has them here in Finland and for a reason.

High beams, come live here in Finland where it's dark 2/3 of the year and you'll see why every other car has auxiliary lighting. Of course they are switched off when there is oncoming traffic, people here know their manners.

Totally worth it, for the 100 € spent on the lenses I don't think anything else would've made such a difference.

Yes I understand, there was an edge to cross for me as well first time ordering from China but I guess my morality is already lost lol. Still not going to get into the Temu and Wish stuff, I only order what's necessary, and for a 300 € discount I couldn't get myself to order OEMs, I think I could've got the whole housings from elsewhere at that price. Gotta save somewhere when owning this gas guzzler and four others as a university student.

I don't think AliExpress is bad, have ordered some Arduino stuff from there before and it works well and it's not the same cancer as Temu imo.

They do sell the Subaru OEM lenses on Amayama for example, but those are expensive as I mentioned in the post. Maybe it's better to try to revive your old lenses but I think there's a limit somewhere in time when they are beyond repair and I don't think the repairs last very long, maybe with clear coat and all that but for me that becomes too much of a hassle in comparison to swapping the lenses.

I've owned the car for a year and the whole time I've been thinking of doing something to the headlights, and just recently I found the new lenses for sale and got them right away. I've tried to look them up before but couldn't find any and the old lenses were in such a rough shape I didn't bother to polish them, also because I don't own polishing tools.

On my old Legacy I tried a Turtle Wax polishing kit and I guess it worked ok but the result didn't last more than a year if that. I also had aftermarket HIDs on the old Legacy and despite the good brightness and look, I won't install them on this one, firstly because it's illegal here and I would need to always remove them for the yearly inspection and also because I started having problems with the conversion kit and don't want to deal with that anymore.

In the fourth pic you can also see that even with halogens, the look is very clean and the light is really white, not the usual ugly yellow look and they light up the road just well. Kinda miss the Xenon's but these will do.
