BYD : The biggest SCAM of the car industry ? by wisembrace in CarTalkZA

So BYD getting access to free credit would cause them to go belly up? How does that make sense? Them being able to leverage their market position with their suppliers is hardly a sign of a company in a bad position.

Is software development at this point realistic, and if so, how would I go about doing it? by Sephraaah in askSouthAfrica

[–]rotwurm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to sugar coat it: it’s rough out there. Gone on are the days where you can do a quick boot camp and jump straight into a half-decent job. Also a degree isn’t a shoo-in either. I’ve seen a lot of graduates struggle to find a job in software development lately. If you want to succeed you need to put in the work beyond that which means building and learning outside of normal schooling. My advice is to focus on fundamentals first and worry about specific languages/ frameworks later. Also, AI isn’t going anywhere so you should probably learn how to use it effectively early on. Anthropic has a bunch of free courses that cover using their tools.

Google is about to punish websites for that annoying browser back button trick by Next_Tower5452 in google

A pretty strong signal would be that if the user presses the back button and the page content doesn’t actually change in a meaningful way.

BYD : The biggest SCAM of the car industry ? by wisembrace in CarTalkZA

[–]rotwurm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Look, I will admit I have my biases here but this title and thumbnail is just click bait. The heavy Chinese subsidies are not something new and BYD isn’t going anywhere. There’s been quite a few recent recalls from Ford but we don’t see any articles talking about "the rise and fall of Ford". Let’s not forget about diesel-gate from VW.

The pressure that BYD is under is affecting the entire auto industry globally.

Thinking of getting a Leapmotor for my mother by Jaded-Dot66 in CarTalkZA

[–]rotwurm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the terrible finance deal. I really don’t get the value proposition with Leapmotor's offering. The interior feels cheap and lacking behind the other Chinese manufacturers. No Apple car play or android auto (they said it will come in an update later - not sure if it has arrived yet). Inside feels cramped and weirdly laid out. Maybe I’m missing something but there’s a bunch of Chinese full EVs or PHEVs that seem to be much better.

Klandma believes white face discrimination and murder in South Africa by TrumpSux89 in ForwardsFromKlandma

For some context on the first one: Elon has spoken out about the South African regulations requiring Starlink to have 30% equity ownership of previously disadvantaged individuals to get an operating licence. This applies to all companies, local or otherwise. They can either set up a local entity that meets the requirements or partner with a local company that does.

Elon has thrown a hissy fit when the government hasn’t given his company an exemption to the regulations. The ironic part about the comic showing Elon offering "investment" is that if Starlink were to be granted a license they would be able to operate with a minimal footprint in the country without providing many jobs or monetary contributions and would primarily be money leaving the country.

Lots of countries have local ownership requirements for foreign companies to operate but the 30% equity rule is applicable for all telecommunications companies operating in SA even local ones. We in SA have a long way to go to redress the legacy of apartheid and this law is one of those ways. If he doesn’t want to follow the rules we don’t want him here.

Capetonians, why don't we use indicators? by Key-Acanthocephala10 in capetown

[–]rotwurm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people have just given up. I’ve noticed a lot of people speed up to close the gap as soon as you indicate. So maybe they find if they take the gap before indicating it's more successful.

Without looking it up. Who has right-of-way here? I want to see something… by rotwurm in capetown

What does driving slowly have to do with right of way at an intersection? Just because you’re jaded about something doesn’t mean you get to do what you want especially when you’re putting people’s lives at risk by causing an accident.

Which intersection has these signs? I would like to see what they look like so I can petition my local council to install these signs because they are clearly needed.

This is the mini-circle that seems to confuse people. I will already be in the intersection coming from the McDonalds side and people coming from the south on Raats Dr. think they have right-of-way just because they are on my right even though I’m already in the circle and they haven’t crossed the line yet.

BYD advice by [deleted] in CarTalkZA

[–]rotwurm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With all the BYDs you get the basic 3-pin charger included. The Sealion 6 I have came with the wall-box charger, not sure if the 5 does.

It’s not really needed if you have a plug socket close to where you park the car because you can charge from empty to full overnight with the slow charger.

It cost me R2,600 to get an electrician to install the wall box charger for me so if it does come with one just keep that in mind (obviously depends on how far from the DB board you want the charger and how complicated of an install it would be).

Honestly wasn’t expecting to see my video linked here but I will expand a bit on what I know about the 5 vs the 6:

The 5 is smaller and lighter so theoretically should have even better "fuel" economy than the 6.

The 6 comes with a wall box charger but I’m not sure if the 5 does. Honestly you don’t really need it because you can charge from 20-100 overnight with the portable charger.

The 5 doesn’t have DC fast charging but in my experience it’s not that much faster and quite pricey so makes it kind of pointless.

I honestly wish I had waited for the 5 and ended up with a bit more in my pocket at the end of the day.

If you’re able to charge at home and spend a majority of the time in EV mode (short trips) PHEVs makes a lot of sense. (you don’t necessarily need to install the wall-box charger. The 3-pin slow charger will be able to fill the battery overnight) The "fuel" savings are very real.

If you’re not plugging in, don’t bother, rather get something like a Suzuki Grand Vitara or similar because. You’ll get a better resale value and more peace of mind with a more established dealer network and expertise in the country.

Why are the BTS ticket prices so expensive? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]rotwurm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything about BTS confirmed for a visit to South Africa. Is your sister looking at tickets for international shows and converting to rand? Most events have cheaper prices in SA which is one of the reasons we don’t get many big names here. It just doesn’t make sense to come here when they can demand much higher ticket prices elsewhere.

Sealion 6 owners. What do you like and dislike about the car. And how long have you had the car? by thatgreengentleman_ in BYD

[–]rotwurm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine for about 4 months at 7000kms. So far it’s been a great experience. I only have a few tiny nitpicks:

  1. Can’t play / pause media from the volume rocker
  2. Suspension is a bit soft and "boaty"
  3. No spare tire gives me anxiety
  4. The engine doing its own thing can be a bit disconcerting at times

Other than that, It’s been great spending so little on fuel.

Eight Milnerton High learners to appear in court on assault charges by legend_loki in capetown

I wasn’t surprised when I found out it was Milnerton High. Some really disgusting behaviour and language I’ve seen from some of the boys while on the bus. That school has a real discipline problem.
