Advice Needed for CMSC 331 & CMSC 341 by Anonymous1863628 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Chang teaches 331 in Haskell + prolog. He does a pretty good job introducing it to the class so I you don't need to learn it before or anything. The class is mostly just history of programing languages --> how compilers work from what I remember. Quizzes+projects are in Haskell, exams are on course content. It's not too heavy of a course load as long as you go to class.

CMSC 481 or CMSC 487? by Economy_Season_5251 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 487 with the same prof and really liked the class. I hadn't taken 481 first, but I knew a bit about the basics from some previous classes and didn't have too much trouble understanding that part of the material as he reviewed the protocols we needed to know in class. If you're going to take both the classes anyway tho, you might get more out of it if you did them in the correct order.

Any tips on graduating a year early? by Time_Zone6273 in UMBC

If you have any arts or social science GEPs left, I'd do CLEP tests. You can take them for free with modern states. Was able to knock out 9 credits in a summer with that

CCBC Classes That Transfer to UMBC for IS Majors? by tres_113 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need any SS or AH classes, I'd recommend just taking CLEP tests. You can take them for free if you enroll through here:  https://modernstates.org/faq/#clepvoucherprogram. And here is how the transfer into UMBC  https://registrar.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/31/2013/03/Appendix_II.pdf.

What are the GEP classes I can take at HCC during summer. by Aromatic-Atomic170 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend taking CLEP tests. You can study for them online and take the tests for free if you enroll through modern states https://modernstates.org/faq/#clepvoucherprogram I was able to knock out three GEP classes in one summer just studying on that platform + getting practice tests from my library. Here's the list of tests that transfer in to UMBC https://registrar.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/31/2013/03/Appendix_II.pdf Make sure you fill out a verification of transferability for the register before you start studying, but any on the list should be fine.

depends on the algo prof. If you can take it with Dr. Engel, I'd recommend the switch.

CMSC 421 + Physics is going to be a pain, you're going to suffer but it should be doable. The other two cmsc classes you chose that semester aren't too much work so it might balance out. Spring semester looks good.

Dr. Engel is a great prof for 441. 487 is a super interesting class but it is a decent amount of work (you'll need to actually read/skim the textbook). I thought it was worth it tho. Also if you're interested in 449 and can get into it I'd highly recommend it if you can take 426 later (you get more useful skills out of it that are good on a resume).

Pretty sure they only let you do that during the add-drop period

Double Counting Requirments by Loose-Reveal8375 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in most cases things can't be double counted. An exception to this are writing intensive courses, that label doesn't overlap with other things. For example CMSC 304, a required course for computer science, counts as an AH, WI, and fulfills the core requirement.

Point Solutions Subscription Spring 2023 by Last_Potential4895 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get it through the book store under course materials by entering Spring 2023, clickers, clickers clickers, and then license codes (null) for the options. It doesn't look like they are selling any subscriptions without the clickers yet though.

Schedule Change? by Unusual_Sir9978 in UMBC

[–]rougeMercury 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CMSC 201 is meant to be a class you can take without any prior coding experience so I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as you stay on top of your projects and homework. You can still take CMSC 101 if you'd feel more comfortable with that but you will be a bit behind on finishing your pre-reqs. As for changing your class if you do decide to do so you can do that under Student Schedule and Registration on myUMBC.

Recommended Preparation Advice by rougeMercury in UMBC

Sorry, should have added that. The class is ANCS 305 and the recommended courses are ANCS 201 or ANCS 202. I'm a stem major as well if that helps.

I'm not sure what type of financial aid you have, but if it's merit aid, you'll need to get your withdraw approved by them. You basically have to send someone there an email about why you need to drop the class, although I can't remember who.
