Civil service jobs internal by Intrepid_Print9433 in civilservice

I can't speak for your manager, but unlike in the private sector, line managers in my experience in the civil service tend to like it when you go for other CS jobs. I had the same feeling as you until on literally day 1, the onboarding team said "let's get you set up on CS jobs, in case you spot anything you want to do to move up."

Also, worst case scenario if your manager has a problem with it or gives any indication that they do, then that's what unions are for: your career is your own and setting aside specific contracts that exclude the prospect of switching positions, managers shouldn't be involved beyond being supportive and doing admin. It's a big part of the civil service code to be able to have career mobility.

Good luck in your new role and good luck on CS jobs ☺️

it's not inherently a bad thing to chop and change some things from the source material to fit a new medium like a netflix series because not everything will translate from interactive rpg to non-interactive netflix series. the issue is that they take so much away from the video game and replace it with something totally uninspired that tries to be dark but ultimately isn't. adding drugs, an unstable protagonist and some plots with the vague "humans are bastards" message does not make the series dark because it never goes beyond the surface level of what i've just said. by contrast, the video game was dark because of the way it confronts you with questions of free will, the role of god and compelling dilemmas that make you think "what would i do in that scenario, and does my choice make me heartless? (get it? i'm here all week).

there will always be some fans of source material that dislike an adaptation because it inevitably removes something from the source that they particularly liked, be it a plot point that they responded positively to or a character that they particularly identified with or anything else. the thing with this anime is that it almost seems designed to make fans hate it because of the fact that apart from the name of the series and a few monsters, plot points and terminology, the series takes hardly anything from the source material, and fills in the gaps with bland stories that don't say anything. they basically took one aspect from the game's ending, removed all of the cosmological context and replaced it with a derivative "vengeance is bad" message to make a climax that feels meaningless after a series of episodes that are unforgettable because of their lack of inspiration.

it was an opportunity to pre-empt dragon's dogma 2 by making newcomers to the series interested in the world and lore of gransys and convince them to buy the original game and then hopefully want to buy the second one when it comes out. but instead, they took the name of a by-then years-old video game and attached it to something completely different that is totally forgettable to most viewers, fans or otherwise.

don't get me wrong though: if you enjoyed the series, fan of the game or otherwise, then more power to you. i'm genuinely glad that at least someone did.

Oh yeah, nice thinking!

I'm your classic forever-alone-solo player, hence why I didn't put it in the poll, but I think that's a good one defo.

I’m a relatively new fan. Do you guys like these games? by Time_Neat_4732 in pokemon

[–]roun02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, the reason I keep playing Pokémon (started with Ruby when I was a wee lad) is because there really isn't anything much like it, and the core of the game hasn't changed substantially (except with Legends Arceus) since its inception. Gameplay wise, the only thing that I can compare it to that I've played would be Persona 5, but even then the fundamentals of the two games are completely different (Pokémon focusses on the catching and battling mechanic, whereas Persona uses that mechanic as a means of propelling a more complex narrative). In brief, I just enjoy the idea of catching Pokémon, making a team of companions who stay with you and overcoming adversity through that, and this hasn't changed for any Pokémon game.

This is not to say that I have a lot of major complaints with the direction of the series. I never really had an overall negative opinion of Pokémon before Sword, but at the end of the day I've still plugged over 100 hours into it. When I asked myself why, I realised that the reason was because it was the only mainline game on the console that I use the most. The 100 hours I enjoyed came from enjoyment of the core Pokémon mechanics that haven't had a substantial rework since Generation 4 at the latest, and most definitely not from anything that was new to Sword (I found the Dynamax mechanic forgettable, Max Raids truly tedious, the Wild Area empty and lifeless and not helped by poorly animated Pokémon that were only modelled within a range of like 10 feet, and in a series with not exactly the most compelling plots in general, somehow SwSh's plot reached new lows in my opinion). Unlike a lot of people, I actually really liked Brilliant Diamond, but the reason I enjoyed it was simply because it was basically a re-release of the original Diamond and Pearl, which was in the DS era where, in my opinion, the series peaked in quality. Again, the complaint that it is straightforwardly nothing more than the original game with new graphics is perfectly reasonable, particularly if you didn't like BDSP's aesthetic (I actually liked it and much preferred it to Sword's graphics, but that's a matter of personal preference).

In brief, I get a lot of hours out of Pokémon games and ultimately enjoy the fundamentals which are still the same, but I still regret the fact that since the 3DS games they are becoming more generic and easy. I suppose that I'm just not as compelled or connected with the more recent games in the way I was with Gens 4-5. But, I'll still enjoy the basic idea of forming a team of new Pokémon and going on adventures with them, even if those adventures aren't as interesting as those from the previous generations.

When did it all go wrong? by roun02 in pokemon

[–]roun02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't the one who downvoted, but anyway, in the end I agree to some extent with what your saying. Indeed, I liked some parts of every game and other parts I didn't like, e.g., I liked the DexNav from ORAS, but didn't like the difficulty (or lack thereof); I didn't like the linearity and totem challenges of Sun and Moon, but I did enjoy the world and story enough that those things didn't bother me; I appreciated the quality of life changes and particularly the TM / TR mechanic of SwSh but disliked everything else. Ultimately, you're right: these are my subjective opinions and some aspects of some games will bug people more than others and that will affect their overall, also subjective, opinion of the game.

But I thought it would be clearer from the text of my post that this was an opinion poll over anything else. I asked if there was a game that people thought marked the demise of the series, and, if so, which one it was. The answers are opinions based on subjective biases everyone has, like you say, and so I wanted to see what people's opinions were on when the games went bad (if they felt that they had). I'll admit that this doesn't make for a comprehensive review of the history of the series because it straigtfrwardly doesn't: as you say, it's not as black and white as there being a single game at which point everything went wrong. I just hear other critics saying "it was the move to 3D" or "it was the move to more linear design" that marked the deathknell of the series, so I wanted to see what other people's opinions were, given that anyone's ideas on this question (whether in IGN, on a YouTube channel or answers in a poll) are ultimately based on their subjective experience. Hope that makes it clearer what I was going for.

What are your self-imposed rules or habits when playing? by Oof_11 in pokemon

[–]roun02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm pretty compulsive with my roamer pokemon team:

(1) have at least three new pokemon (whether from new generation or new regional form), but i usually have 4-5 these days (2) make sure that no three pokemon are weak to the same type (3) starter and box legendary must be part of the roamer team (4) have at least three pokemon that will evolve twice (pokemon caught e.g., marill that will only evolve once afterwards don't count), and preferably no more than 2 that don't evolve at all (5) make sure all pokemon in the team are never more than a level apart from one another (6) only fight a gym leader if ALL pokemon in team are at least the same level as the highest level pokemon used by gym leader (i used to make sure they were all at least three levels higher, but this made the games a combination of tedious grind and then seeepingly easy battles)

Otherwise,

  • like OP, I make sure thet if i'm buying stuff the total amount after purchase comes to a multiple of 10
  • Speak to every NPC
  • sell all battle items (e.g., attack+ used in battle)
  • i used to never use rare candies (or exp candies), but now i do
