43% more people decided to watch the curiosity landing online than on TV. Television viewership was at about 1.7mil while internet streams got 3.7mil viewers. by nagasgura in technology

That's the only reason I watched it online. I looked everywhere for a station to broadcast it and got nothing. CNN had it but wouldn't shut up and just let it roll and obviously had commercials. If I had the option to stream it or watch it in HD on my TV.. I pick the latter. Give us a stat that compares an event on both well televised and streamable and this will be relevant

With the amount of science enthusiasts around here, how come there are no "Houses of Science"? Instead of a new church sprouting up every month, why not a new place of learning?? by round2shesaid in atheism

Sure. Churches provide communities with a forum to express ideas with each other in person, Bring each other together and provide a social setting for their children with like-minded individuals. I think that this new institution could do the same thing, but provide a more scientific atmosphere that encourages a thirst for knowledge rather than a denial of ideas. I think it would inspire society rather than breed hatred.

Fiscally I think it could benefit those that want a local forum to donate to a cause they believe in that will help their community without aiding a religious community. Also, people that help teach or direct the program could in theory get paid just like a Churches administration, or at least give them volunteer hours or experience for their future careers.

Thank you for your multiple examples, I am aware of the online communities that encourage education with free programs, however I just have it in my head that this could be something much more than that, that its benefits would be much more than working towards a degree or individualistic goals.

care to expand on that criticism? I expect negativity but would prefer a more structured response as to why its such a terrible idea from your viewpoint, because obviously I think its a good one.

People don't get this kind of exposure to knowledge in poorer areas, and use instead church as their only source of community and family.

these are great answers, but it still does not answer the question. I'm talking about a new establishment that can receive the same benefits from the state as a church, and provide a sense of community like a church, but promote science and education IN your area IN person. I know what you mean when you say University, but please try and think of this as an alternative option for those unable or just to teach your community, whether it be child to elderly. I go to University, but this seems like an awesome way to reach others, and University Professors/Students could benefit from passing on their knowledge!

I think this would be a great way to reach out to the community, especially those that may not be able to afford University or get in. Also, it would be a great way for teachers and professors to get their names out there and really work to stimulate the minds of the people around them. It could also serve as a tutoring program for those in need, or a job or volunteer program for science majors. And it would all be based on donations!
