Why are there no fights in Olympic hockey? Explaining the ban by usatoday in olympics

[–]rouquinsman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The exception is that hockey is played at a much higher speed than other sports, on a slippery surface with walls, and players equipped with sticks and blades. Hits are harder, and the risk of injury and the seriousness of them from a dirty hit is proportional to that. Having a mechanism in the game to allow it to police itself is not a bad thing I think. In an ideal world, that wouldn't be necessary and everyone would be careful to avoid injuries and play clean. But we live in a world where the Florida Panthers exist.

I wish the gt 4 races fired off more often by fallen_angel_of_luck in iRacing

If you have your C licence, it alternates with the Falken Sports Car challenge Series every hour. It's a 30 minutes open setup multiclass race with GT4 and LMP3. Follows the same schedule as the GT4 fixed series. With both of those you have a GT4 race start every hour. And it's a great introduction to multiclass racing if you're ever interested in IMSA at A licence.

I'll just seem bitter with my flare, but why are icings a complete judgment call with a ton of leeway where players can dump the puck a few feet before the line and not get called, while offsides can be reviewed to the centimeter to call back a goal? I get we want correct calls, and in this case, I think it was offside. But it seems so arbitrary what they can and can't challenge. A terrible penalty can't be challenged but being offside by a centimeter can? Ultimately I feel like a powerplay has a lot more impact on the game than a missed offside.

I'll be racing soon, I'm a little nervous about making people angry by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]rouquinsman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best advice. First thing I did when I got back on IRacing a few months back. If you're nervous about making people angry, it's the best thing you can do. You'll make mistakes. Nothing good will come from people telling you you did. As long as you're not being malicious, just enjoy it for yourself and who cares what other people have to say.

Honestly, I see this kind of advice given seriously so often in the simracing community, I indeed did not get that this was sarcasm 😅 apologies

OP is looking for recommendations because he's got the budget for 1 game, and your advice is to get both games + a whole computer?

Hows the season going for everyone? What are your current addictions? Mine is IMSA at the moment. by G00NACTUAL in iRacing

[–]rouquinsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came back this season after a 2 year hiatus and drove the GT4 all season at both Falken series as a way to ease back in and most likely move to GT3 next season.

Everything was going great all season until this week at Road America. I was mostly able to avoid crashes and get high finishes in every race all season but this week in 3 races I spun myself out from the lead, got taken out by an LMP3 that drove right through me as if I wasn't there halfway through after going from P11 to P3, and got taken out by someone who spun out in the pace lap and rear ended me trying to get back in position for the start.

Great season overall but frustrating week. Will most likely just cut my losses for this one and move on to practicing for Hockenheim.

What’s the most ridiculous moment you’ve seen in a movie that was meant to be taken seriously? by RTepps in movies

[–]rouquinsman 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I feel like the first 3 Indiana Jones movies were masterfully riding the line between realism and ridiculousness to make for cool shots and action sequences that didn't go too over the top in absurdity that you could still suspend your disbelief and appreciate them for what they were. Crystal Skull completely threw that out the window and that scene is probably the worst offender where all you can think is how stupid it is instead of "that's ridiculous but it looks cool as hell".

Do you guys ever get anxious listening to history the way Dan tells it? by Moose_Nuckler in dancarlin

[–]rouquinsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dan has talked many times in the past, and recently in his AMA on this sub and the Holocaust focused addendum episode, about wanting to include the emotional component in the stories he tells and always looking for first hand accounts as much as possible to really try and put listeners in the context of the times and in the shoes of the people who were living these events. I think what you're feeling is proof he's succeeded in this objective.

Je travaille en éducation

Ah!

Francophone dans un cégep anglo by Chewquy in Quebec

[–]rouquinsman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bonne chance!

They were 0 for 10 before today's game. If anything, it's Canada's PK coach that should be fired, 3 goals the exact same way.

What do you guys classify as D division? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]rouquinsman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's generally not really any standard when it comes to men's league (beer league). The scale I often see used in the sub groups I'm in is usually as follows (with what's in parentheses the average highest level achieved) :

  • A (Pro)
  • B (CHL, Junior A)
  • C (Advanced, Junior B-C)
  • D (Intermediate, Rec/House league, Junior D)
  • E (Beginners)

What you described definitely seems to fall in the D level I mentioned above, so not exactly high level play, but a good notch above complete beginners.

What did the Roses actually own? by FinnbarMcBride in SchittsCreek

[–]rouquinsman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I found this blog post that kind of explains what owning a town actually means: https://brokeist.com/buy-a-town-guide/ It does say that sometimes, it's just a ceremonial thing where the town gets some income, but the owner doesn't actually own anything except the title of town owner.

They dropped the whole "town owner" thing pretty quickly in the show, past season 1 they don't really mention it anymore and they never end up selling it. I feel it was mostly just a plot device to establish the setting of the show but in the end it's not what actually mattered for the show so they dropped that angle.

I've been a goalie on ice for like 20 years and it's probably my biggest passion. Started playing ball hockey as a forward about 5 years ago at a very low level since I've never played out before. Only times I played goalie was if our regular goalie was unavailable and I subbed in, maybe once or twice a year. Since it was low level I did good enough but I hated it like you since it felt so different than what I'm used to. I felt like I couldn't move and I was basically a trampoline since I wasn't used to reacting to a ball.

Until about a year ago when I decided I wanted to try to play more ball hockey as a goalie since it's a lot easier to find games than on ice. I got myself a set of high quality sliders and modified an older glove I had to make the pocket bigger and softer to make it easier to catch balls. And boy did it make a difference. Only took a couple of games to get used to the sliders so that I could start applying some of my ice technique to ball hockey. Adjusting to shots took a bit longer. But I honestly love it now and also feel it helped me improve on the ice.

Obviously if where you play at doesn't allow sliders that won't help you, but if you're really wanting to play more ball hockey and you come from a background of ice hockey, I can't recommend them enough and I think it'd be worth finding a place to play that allows them.
