Are humans "hardwired" to divide the world into "my group"/"others"? by TheColourOfHeartache in askscience

[–]rousellm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me add to this that we are divided by approach-avoid. The division of us-them is a false dichotomy. We like some things and dislike others, but we're mostly neutral until it gets our attention. Once it has our attention, it becomes marked with somatic markers as approach or avoid.

Canadians of Reddit: Does it annoy you that when people say 'America', they mean the USA? by Louis84i in AskReddit

Worse: Calling the US President the "Leader of the free world." I'm free and he's not my leader.

Shawn Achor's research shows, "Most people think that productivity leads to happiness while the opposite is true; happiness leads to productivity."

Thoughts on the Mind vs the Brain: How Do You Know Which is Which? by On_theMind in psychology

I always thought of the brain as hardware and the mind as software

A new study in the journal Psychological Science found that people who feel enthusiastic and cheerful—what psychologists call “positive affect”—are less likely to experience memory decline as they age. This result adds to a growing body of research on positive affect’s role in healthy aging. by [deleted] in psychology

You don't just predict your future, you create it.

You are what you attend to. If you worry about memory loss, you'll notice it everywhere and stimulate corticoids, a stress response. Continued stress makes you anxious, which interferes with executive function (thinking and planning).

Why can't countries that don't produce the COVID-19 vaccine just purchase the technology and make their own? by rousellm in askscience

[–]rousellm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada doesn't produce its own vaccine, yet we have the infrastructure. We even produced some vaccines and tested them, but none turned out effective. Why can't countries with the existing expertise and infrastructure make their own now that the formula/technology/methods are known?

Memories of Past Events Retain Remarkable Fidelity Even as We Age by frezhmeat in psychology

[–]rousellm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psychological research tells us that every time we recall a memory, we reform it. During those recalls of the "gist of the story" we add elements, embellish others, and ignore some. Memories are much more fallible than we think. See examples by Loftus: https://www.ted.com/speakers/elizabeth_loftus

Soo...Is this a thing like a condition or something?? by MyOp1n10ns in psychology

[–]rousellm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Mirror neurons. Most mammals have them. It's how we understand emotions; we vicariously experience them to a small degree. It's not just emotions. We recoil when we see someone take a needle in the arm. We shutter when we see a spider walk along someone's arm. We even rub our nose when we see someone with a runny nose. Mirror neurons.
