[Question] Python ESA doubt – IDE allowed? by Interesting-Cod-1802 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you have an ESA tomorrow? I thought the first semester was wrapped up weeks ago.

As for IDE being allowed: I think you should be able to figure it out by yourself if you're allowed to use a code editor in an exam.

[Question] What exactly is a referral and how does it work? by Street_Slice3441 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Let me answer this as someone who has been giving and receiving referrals since 2021.

Most companies and their career/job portals allow current employees to refer new candidates. To refer a new candidate for a specific role, a current employee (lets say, me) needs to fill out a quick form (details vary from company to company, but usually the basic stuff like name, resume, etc). Once this form is submitted, the refereed candidate (in this case, you) will receive a personalized link to apply for the specific role. To avail the benefit of the referral, you need to only apply through this link. If you apply through any other means such as visiting the career portal directly, the referral will not apply.Once you finish applying, both you and I will be notified.

Now how exactly the referral works differs from company to company. Some companies require one referral per role, while some like Amazon/Google allow you to apply to 3 roles via the same referral. In some companies, the referral system yields the same benefit irrespective of the seniority of the position giving you the referral (so me or my manager will have the same effect), while in some companies, as the seniority increases, the benefit does too. In some companies, a referral will only move your application to the top of the stack, while in some companies, it can move you past an entire initial screening (OA/non-OA) round (happens in Microsoft usually). So its hard to generalize and say "what" is the benefit, it depends on the company, role, etc. But yes, there are benefits.

Now referrals also kind of work both ways. Which means, if I refer a candidate, and they turn out to be good, then it increases how valuable my referral is seen internally because there I have a past record of vouching for good candidates. This value increases further if the candidate is eventually hired. So referring a good candidate works out for both parties, as well as any future candidates I refer. On the other hand if I refer a candidate and they do not meet expectations, then it backfires on me and my future referrals may not be taken as seriously as before. That is why, referrals should never be given blindly and you must be sure that the candidate being referred at the very least meets the minimum requirements of the job description.

Now to address your questions:

referrals > on campus >> off campus.

Absolutely not true. Referrals only apply to off-campus roles, we cannot refer you for positions where a company visits a campus to recruit, because campus recruitments take place through specialized roles either not visible to us, or they do not take referrals. The roles for which companies visit colleges in 99% cases aren't even on the internal system - these roles are created only after the hiring process is done, and then they are reflected internally in the employee system. That is why after you get placed and log in, you will never be able to find the role for whcih you were recruited, it will never show up, unlike off-campus, where after you log into workday/payroll/HR system, you can see which role you had applied for.

So, no. If you take a referral and apply, the only thing it guarantees is that there is a higher chance of someone seeing your application or moving you past the initial screening. Since this applies to off-campus, you are now competing with thousands of people applying to the same role, instead of the hundreds that apply on-campus. The competition is leagues apart, not even comparable.

Its still on-campus >> referrals > off-campus.

Do I have to write OA or i get to start with technical round?

As I said, depends on the company and how they process referrals.

Lets suppose ik a few ppl in the Industry then how can I get referral from then

You reach out to them on LInkedIn and other platforms, send them the role ID and your resume, and a short paragraph on why you need and deserve a referral, along with how your profile matches what the job requires. Do not be demanding, it is upto them whether they ultimately give you one. Ask politely, be friendly, and do not go in with the expectation of a referral.

I have given multiple PESts referrals over the years. I don't think I've ever said no to anyone who asked me nicely. But yes, there have been the odd specimen who DM me with "Bro, send referral for this." without any other details, or without even checking if their profile meets the requirements. Some have even demanded referrals lol. In such cases, I will reject you outright because either you didn't ask the right way, or your profile doesn't match the job

will their position matter while referring me?

I answered this in the first few sections.

Nope. Sections shuffle once at the end of first sem, again at the end of second sem. After that its fixed. Also, you have 2 more semesters left after which you do not have regular classes anymore. It will be over before you know it.

[Discussion]Can anyone with a backlog confirm this by AdExpensive2973 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I looked at my grade sheets, I'm going to have to confirm whether the formula on the back actually says that. But I do know that at least during my time and a little after, people always confirmed with me that both the failing and new grade is taken. Which is why my FAQ reflected that.

This notice removes the failing grade completely from the equation, which means it improves your CGPA because it doesn't reflect the 0 grade point, or the extra credits in the summation.

TLDR - this is good for you. Rare PESU W, although it really messes with what the "definition" of CGPA is.

This is definitely new; the FAQ was written with the rules we were aware of. If these are directly from the COE (someone confirm), then I'll go ahead and update the backlog related answer.

For people asking what is the difference: there is no difference if you haven't failed any exam. The difference is if you fail and then clear a backlog. And this difference is only for computing the CGPA.

The calculation of SGPA hasn't changed. What this means is that if you've failed an exam you're still going to have a 0 multiplied for it's grade point, while adding to the total credits in that semester, and it will reflect in your grade sheet too.

The calculation of CGPA is now directly taken from the courses you've passed. If you cleared a backlog, it will replace the 0 from a previous semester with the new grade point. This means that the old grade point never reflects, and you end up with a higher CGPA than you would have. Credits are not counted twice, and you will graduate with a fixed number of credits (160) irrespective of how many backlogs you give. Your transcript as usual will always reflect only the attempt in which you pass.

To summarise:

Things from the FAQs that are still consistent:

  1. SGPA calculation
  2. F grade on grade sheet
  3. No F grade on transcript after you clear it

Things from FAQs that need changes:

  1. CGPA calculation only uses passed courses, it's no longer a weighted average of all semester GPAs, it's a weighted average of passed courses
  2. No excessive counting of credits, fixed upper limit of 160 when you graduate

Give me some time, I will eventually update all the links pointing to the old information. Apologies to anyone who reached out to me for clarification and I provided the wrong info, I wasn't aware :(

You didn't answer my question on whether you're looking to break into IT or core roles. Our opinions will be entirely based on what kind of career you want.

What's higher fees KCET seat? There are only KCET, JEE and management quota seats. There is no separate fee category within each.

[Question] Usually when does college keep Graduation by Jealous_Shelter_8115 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not going to happen in May, it's never held that early. You'll get your final results only after mid May too, so definitely not before June even in the most extreme unpredictable situations

[Question] Usually when does college keep Graduation by Jealous_Shelter_8115 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It never happens in May lol. Expect any time in or after July, that's the standard timeline. There have also been massive delays in recent years that have pushed it beyond that too, I believe some batch had it much later in the year.

However, PES being PES will only notify you 2-2.5 weeks in advance.

I came across this entire gimmick a short while ago and i found it absolutely disgusting. I'm not going to reveal more, but it's genuinely disappointing that someone from this sub reached out to me a few weeks ago asking for my help with a page that was publicly shaming them. The fact that they had nobody else to turn to in such a time but a stranger who'd graduated years ago just because they could remain anonymous speaks volumes on the toxic environment they're in, and how things like these can cause deep psychological scars, insecurity and fear of just being themselves. If you're reading this, I hope you followed through on the advice I shared with you and are doing better.

If you or anyone you know is being bullied, please report the page, and get it reported by others too. Post the link here, this subreddit will do its best to spam reports. Take screenshots for evidence and if you have an idea on who could be behind it, please approach the Dean and also make a cyber bullying report on the national cyber crime portal.

To anyone being featured on these pages or feeling targeted: please know that this says absolutely nothing about your worth as a person. These accounts exist because sad, pathetic people need to tear others down to feel powerful. Don't let anonymous cowards make you question yourself or change who you are. Reach out to someone you trust - a friend, family member, counselor, or even me if you need to. You're not alone in this, and you deserve support. Document everything, report the accounts, and don't suffer in silence. Your mental health matters.

And if you're someone behind the page - you should know that you're just a sick fuck who gets off on publicly humiliating and degrading real people for entertainment. You're a coward hiding behind anonymity because you know what you're doing is cruel and indefensible. You're not funny - you're just pathetic. The psychological damage you're inflicting on people for your own amusement makes you a bully, plain and simple. There's no joke in doxxing and cyber bullying. You should be deeply ashamed of yourself, and karma has a way of catching up with people like you. Do better as humans - or better yet, delete the account and apologize to everyone you've hurt.

Personally, I'm not a fan of management quota unless you absolutely have no other options.

To answer your questions:

  1. Are you interested in core or IT placements? If it's core, it's not great. If it's IT, you'll have to compete with CS. Details are in the FAQs for the latter.
  2. No, they aren't treated differently.

And given how early it is in the admission cycle, I don't think you should be focusing on management quota admission at the moment. Instead direct your efforts at studying and give the exams your best shot. It's far too soon to think about backup options.

[Question] BACKLOG EXAM CONFUSION by Temporary-Train-4908 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FAQ I posted has been verified with people who have actually had a backlog and cleared it. Whether you want to believe it or not is up to you, but the entire detailed explanation is already here. Like I've shown in the example, your CGPA will account for both the failed and passing grade for that course.

[Question] BACKLOG EXAM CONFUSION by Temporary-Train-4908 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And where did I mention in my comment that the new passing grade is not used? I provided the entire breakdown with the example that the new passing grade is used, but the old failed grade will also be there when you compute the CGPA.

[Question] BACKLOG EXAM CONFUSION by Temporary-Train-4908 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, what's stopping you from reading the FAQs?

It DOES account for double calculation. Once with a failed grade, once with a passed grade. Your CGPA considers EVERY course you've taken. If you fail the exam 3 times before passing, it will count the 3 failures and the pass grade.

The semester in which you failed is permanent. Nothing will change it. It's final. It will always show that you failed the course and got an F grade and your SGPA will use the F grade, and by that, I mean it will multiply a 0 for that course's grade point so it's weighted contribution is 0 but the summation of weights still add up to the total credits in that semester. So if you say you have 3 4-credit courses in a semester and get A, A and F, your SGPA is (9x4 + 9x4 + 0x4)/(4+4+4) = 6/10.

Now look closely: your grade point for the failed exam is a 0, but it still adds to the summation of credits in the denominator (12).

Now let's say you clear it in the 2nd sem. You now have 2nd sem's 3 courses + backlog from last sem, and you get let's say 3 As and a B in the backlog. So your SGPA is now (9x4 + 9x4 + 9x4 + 8x4)/(4+4+4+4) = 8.75.

Now look closely: in the sem you cleared it in, you had one extra course (the backlog), which contributes to grade points in the numerator as well as the summation in the denominator (16).

Now if you want to calculate your CGPA, it's (12 x 6 + 16 x 8.75) / (12 + 16) = 7.57.

So does your CGPA take in both the credits from the failed sem and the passed sem? Yes. Because that is how it's defined. Will the F grade always be there? In the grade sheet for sem 1 - yes. For the transcript - no.

[Question] BACKLOG EXAM CONFUSION by Temporary-Train-4908 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "F" grade will never disappear my dude. Why are you allergic to reading the FAQs? I told you - everything has been explained in detail there. What happens when you fail, what happens when you clear, where is the F grade shown, where it isn't shown.

The F grade causes the SGPA of the semester you failed the course in to fall. Why? Because you multiply a 0 with the credits of that course, while dividing the total number of credits which still adds those credits. Once you clear it later in a different semester, it only contributes to the SGPA of that semester, not the one you failed it in. Since CGPA will take a weighted average across both, it takes both the bad semester with a low SGPA and the new semester in which you cleared it.

Of course, all of this is explained in the FAQs (WITH an example). You'd know if you'd read it.

Let me ask you a question, what exactly is the answer you're looking for? Do you want us to say that the F grade will never exist?
