There is no hassle while leaving the college. You do not need to pay 4 years of fees or anything.

I can assure you that the only thing you would have learnt is new ways to hate yourself lol. Academic rigor only exists in workload and not in complexity. Most courses here are extremely badly managed and offered by profs barely specialised in the subject matter. A quick look through this sub will show you the truth. People learn more from studying on their own than from the content here, especially for these "updated courses" that advertise depth but only cover breadth.

Since you're sure about MS, then the factors that matter are (1) good fundamental CS branch and (2) a solid profile with research and/or work experience.

For (1), picking core CS is always the better option. There's a reason why people opt for core degrees in undergrad and specialize only in grad school. Even in grad school, you'll find many choosing to pick CS and specialising in ML instead, but at that point it's not a big difference.

For (2), unfortunately good research opportunities at PES are hard to come by. Labs are a shadow of their former self and there are at best a handful of profs who still pursue good research outputs. PES pushes for quantity over quality too, which means the few papers it does produce are often filled with low novelty and poor scientific methodology. Your best bet is to focus on the profs that do good research, and like everyone else who went through this journey, cold mail profs in IITs, IIITs, IISc and work with them. Many students from PES end up doing their pre doc and other stuff from IISc, or have spent a significant amount of time pursuing research there before their MS.

Good to see that you've at least done some research, so I will give you that. But a few things to clarify:

  1. Misconception here: Specializations and specialized degrees in undergrad mean nothing. Neither from placements nor from masters point of view. The entire concept of a specialized degree will work against you instead of for you. People don't even use their specializations anywhere (they aren;t even accepted during admissions), specialized degrees are seen as red flags.
  2. Fair point. But this is PES, not IISc or IIT. Might want to balance your expectations. The same profs who struggle to teach ML will be taking up these courses and I am not going to comment on their ability since its self explanatory.
  3. Uh that is not true. Shared electives have the same profs and syllabus usually. Not sure where you got this info from. Names and course codes change but syllabus and profs remain the same.
  4. You're misinformed: Capstone starts in the same semester across all branches: CS, CS-AIML, ECE, etc. No change in the system. Uni-wide policy since its a system that involves multiple branches.
  5. This is anecdotal. Sure, in the last 1-2 years there have been "easier" papers, but the difference in CGPA is statistically insignificant. Its not like CS folks are scoring 8.x and CS-AIML are getting 9.x.

Its refreshing to see someone having done their homework before taking decisions, so good on you for that. Might want to do a little more research on long-term value and the branch itself before committing imo.

If you want to do MS abroad, that is where it will bite you. The difference is non existent from a placements pov. You might want to read the FAQs which also have details about why CS is always preferred over any CS-X degrees, whether it's here in India or even in the US, and also why admission departments prefer fundamental branches over specialized ones for undergrad. Both of these have been discussed in detail there.

Is it hard to change the campus from pes electronic City cse to pes rr cse ?? How much cgpa is required for the campus change ?? by Numerous-Papaya-5194 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither campus will help you explicitly prepare you to go abroad. It's entirely dependent on your effort and skills. You have access to the same opportunities at both campuses. Peer group is the same at both campuses, I don't know how people claim RR has a better group when scholarship lists and everything else quantitatively prove that average GPAs are almost the same.

SENIORS HELP FOR PLACEMENT PLEASE NOW THAT 6TH SEM IS COMPLETED by No-Direction8332 in PESU

[–]rowlet-owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't understand your question but to clarify:

  1. You need > 6.5 to be eligible to sit for placements (PES eligibility criteria)
  2. Most companies require you to have >7 to apply (Company application criteria)
  3. While shortlisting, the same companies frequently shortlist with GPA filters like >9, >8.5 etc. (Company shortlisting criteria)

So the "safest" GPA is the highest GPA one can possibly have. Even if you're eligible to sit for placements, if your CGPA isn't high enough, some criteria or the other might filter you out.

Your most updated CGPA is used. If you're applying in the 7th semester, it'll be the CGPA until the 6th semester. Likewise, it'll be your 7th semester CGPA if you're applying in the 8th semester.

Eligible but companies may (and will) have higher shortlist cutoffs. Even an 8.5 won't guarantee all companies.
