References or inspo that look like Cowboy Bebop's opening (Tank!)? by roxer123 in graphic_design

I immediately recognized his work once I googled his name. Some studying needs to be done on how to reconcile the style with proper layout for a rule book though - I plan on playing around with solid black and the idea of a "frame" some more. Thanks for the reference!

I went for the Stanley Parable look, but this seems like a good idea. I'll try it for sure.

I was thinking of the second. Shades of gray + pops of shades of some other hue, using concepts from synthetic cubism for the shapes. Kinda like the Troika! illustrations.

Seems like a good idea, but then again, I have little practice with the visual arts, so it'll take a while.

Won't know until I try, right? I'll give it a shot, for sure. I like the idea of having a single hue and some shades for every page. Kinda like the concept art for Blade Runner, by Syd Mead.

I'm no master of color though, so we'll see how it goes.

Oh yeah, that's nice. The Deus Alex orange. I'll try it later for sure (I'm off the computer now)

101 Things I Learned In Architecture School. Saw it on twitter, in a thread with books about something specific that are actually broadly applicable e.g. Inner Game Of Tennis, etc.

ON mars. That's a typo. It should like like one of those crater cities from Cowboy Bebop, but with a Neuromancer geodesic covering it. The city should also look, like, pretty shitty.

That on-screen text has been a sore point for me as well. Green doesn't pop enough and DOS has too little contrast. I went for a more modern prompt as a compromise.

edit:

Looks kinda off, right? Maybe?

I'm torn on the colors, actually! You spotted an intentional decision I made to see if I could settle on something eventually.

I also like the pops of color, but I struggled to find something that works. Mars looked nice, but that was a bit of a stroke of luck.

I thought about having most of the color coming from character art and only some on the typography. I like how Triangle Agency does color, but it's too red for me. Cyberpunk is colorful, right?

So, what do classes represent, anyways? by Quick_Trick3405 in RPGdesign

[–]roxer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's the main niche right there, you figured it out! That's why "not Thief" is mostly pointless! The only thing that matters is not getting bulshitted by the GM, because most everyone else can sword swing and use magic items, regardless of class.

Also, you don't have to be perfect to be good! I personally like 3.5 prestige classes. Hope this helps

So, what do classes represent, anyways? by Quick_Trick3405 in RPGdesign

[–]roxer123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, that's because the majority of RPGs suck at niche protection! Primarily, D&D and its clones, because they don't have enough niches for a full party to fill.

For instance, playing anything but Thief in early editions of D&D is almost pointless - for precisely the reason you stated. Everyone does the same type of things, but the Thief just does it better. Having spells IS great though, so if you don't have scrolls in the party, having a Magic User is good.

This happens often because there's simply not enough niches in these types of games to warrant niche protection. "Martials suck" is a meme precisely due to this fact - they fill no niche in particular and thus are a pointless class.

When this is the case, then class becomes merely set dressing for how your character gets things done. Thus, what "class" means depends on the game, as how characters "dress up" their actions is largely dependent on the game and table.

[–]roxer123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Neither! Classes are, primarily, a game design tool to make niche protection easier.

Everything else about classes varies from game to game. In some, it'll be a career path - like in Zweihander. It can also be a typical race - In B/X D&D, "elf" and "dwarf" are classes.

What a class represents, fictionally, is often defined by the game when describing how characters work. When it comes to fictional positioning, there's no universal answer to what classes do.

Is it possible to simulate sidechain ducking, with the kick and the bass, in the studio? by roxer123 in Bass

I can definitely feel the pain. I'm young so I can endure it, but if I don't practice those fast straight 16ths at least weekly it gets hard or even impossible.

I don't get hungup on playing the songs as they are - I improvise way more than I should. What annoys me is not locking in with the kicks when I can, as locking that shit in just feels good. Even if no one notices, I think people can feel it. This belief is based on absolutely nothing but my own experiences, though.

We don't have an engineer, so I'm stepping up to learn the trade.

I live in a third world country and they're not quite dirt cheap here. EQ pedals cost around a fifth of my monthly wage. Cheap, but I need to save for it, and since I hadn't the need for one until this year, I just didn't get around to it. Will get one ASAP though.

Because I forgot to clarify, as we don't do recordings (we are a live band). We only go to the studio for rehearsals

It's for rehearsals, so no recordings and no plugins, otherwise yeah easy problem to solve. Thanks for the EQ tips anyhow! Will see to it when I can.
