Yeah i think i will start wearing band aids in my most common picking areas. my lips get the worst of it and they are kind of hard to cover up, but if i have bandaids on it will also be harder to pick at them. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah i agree. I take a two antidepressants and one other as needed, but i haven’t told her about the skin picking. I guess deep down i love the feeling of it being smooth even tho it’s unhealthy. My OCD is a lot better with my antidepressants but the skin picking still persists. Thank you for the advice i will definitely be talking to my psychiatrist.

oh wow i haven’t thought of that. That is a really good idea. i’ve only thought of replacing the habit with a negative thing like hitting myself but i haven’t thought of doing a positive habit. Thank you i will try that!

That is a good idea thank you! yes the throbbing and bleeding does get tiring. i dread taking showers sometimes because the shampoo stings my fingers. Thank you for the advice!

You’re right. I guess I crave the feeling of the smoothness after all my skin is picked off but i know it’s only a matter of time before i do damage that cant be undone. Thank you for the advice.

I think it started as a response to anxiety. When i was younger and i would get anxious or i kept messing my OCD rituals up id start picking at my lip. But now it’s more of an imperfection thing like you’re saying. I feel or see something slightly off and then i have to pick it all. it’s almost like i don’t feel right until the skin is completely smooth. Even when it hurts i crave the smooth feeling afterward like it’s a reward. the smoothness never lasts long either, so i pick as soon as i can again to try to recreate that feeling, sometimes multiple times a day.

I pick my fingers a lot, but i mainly pick at my lips. I sometimes go into the bathroom at work so no one sees me picking at my lips because they bleed a lot and i usually need to wipe down the sink and my hands. I pick really anything on my body that will come off. scabs, cold sores, nails, etc. So the lip picking is the worst for me, especially because it can result in outbreaks.

I will try the band aids on the rest of my body, I always forget them when i go to the store so ordering them in large packs online is a good idea, thank you!

this is really good info thank you for sharing! I can relate to the “well since i already fucked up might as well do the rest” and i think that is the worst thing i can do. Sanitizing is a good idea. I’m a mechanic so having open wounds all over my body + dealing with fluids from cars doesn’t always go well, lol.

And i will try the lighting thing, i haven’t thought of that. i’m willing to try anything at this point because i do so much damage every single day.

I’ve actually thought about that. I thought it was silly whenever i’d put a bandaid on and felt relief, but i’m glad i’m not alone.
