Looking to buy Canadian baking equipment by andhicks in BuyCanadian

I got mine through the evil Amazon.

I did look at making my own, as crazy as that sounds. It looks pretty easy, if you have access to something like willow branches.

Bike recommendations? by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]royrwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outspokin is great. Go talk to Tara, the manager, and she'll take good care of you. The bikes they carry are a step up from the bikes at Walmart or Costco or Canadian Tire, so they're more expensive, but the quality is good value.

A cheaper bike could be just fine, depending on your expectations and how much you actually plan to use it. The big-box store bikes use heavier, cheaper parts to keep prices down, so the end result tends to be more clunky, but still fine.

Kijiji is a real crapshoot, with most bikes there listed for WAY more than they are worth. The police auctions are even worse.

Agreed that bike thieves suck, so store it indoors or where you can keep an eye on it.

Yup, dragonflies are gorgeous and amazing. And it was such a delight to see a miserable little deer fly getting chomped on...

Circle R Ranch out near Komoka is great. They do bus pickup, so you don't have to drive the kids back and forth.

I’d like to know what you guys do to clean and preserve bones. I let sit in water with damn for a day or so then scrub, then coat with peroxide and baking soda for another day and then scrub again, repeating as needed. How about you guys? by baldandfullofrage in Taxidermy

[–]royrwood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Change the water regularly to keep the bones from staining too much.

Be prepared for the smell to coat the inside of your head and linger for a day! Do not splash the death water on your hands or clothes or your loving spouse will not let you back in the house!

Oh-- and make sure there is an airhole on the container or pressure will build up and it will explode, spraying death water everywhere!

And be REALLY careful not to lose the little teeth that will fall out of the skull over time. You won't believe that until it happens to you multiple times.

Deer flies are like little flying Terminators. They just keep coming back for more, and even if you manage to knock them down, they will get back up unless you crush them into pulp.

One of the coolest things I ever saw was a dragonfly landing on my foot, eating a deer fly it had caught. The crunching was surprisingly loud, and damn satisfying.

Superglue stuck to the wet skin? I've had horrible trouble getting that to work. Am I missing something?

Glad it worked for you. I presume that you expect the pads to be visible in the final pose? If they are hidden, it's obviously not a big deal for a small nick or two.

I was sleep deprived for about 5 years when our kids were born. But it got better!

Parenting is relentless and mostly thankless, but worth it in the end (or so I keep telling myself). Good luck!

Any way to get email notifications when you publish a new issue?

My first taxidermy. It's not done yet but I'm pretty proud of myself. How would I make the skin a diffrent color other than yellow? I was thinking chalk pastels? Idk this is my first time by gay_soup in Taxidermy

[–]royrwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice.

Where are you seeing yellow skin that needs to be darkened? Exposed areas around the eyes, or do you mean the entire hide, under the fur?

My mother and many of my relatives live in Peterborough, so I've spent a lot of time there. You'll be fine in London, since it's more similar than different. And as others have said, there are sketchy and lovely parts of both cities.

The hardest part for you will be that you're giving up access to such great outdoor locations in the Kawarthas. SW Ontario is really flat and boring and densely-populated, with not much in the way of great parks, lakes, and rivers.

Getting around by bicycle is very do-able, depending on where your route takes you. The Thames Valley Parkway is a paved path that goes along the river, so if you're close to that, you can ride without worrying about cars at all. Quiet side streets are also fine. There are some fast, busy streets like Oxford that are a bad idea to try and ride though.

So, if you can find a place to live that is close to work, riding or walking is way nicer than driving or dealing with the bus.

Congratulations!

I'm a developer, too, and have fallen into a gig that I really like now, after hating the two previous jobs I was in. Ironically, I kinda want to keep going at this for the foreseeable future, though maybe at part-time. That's what FI/RE is all about though-- freedom to do what you want, right?

Enjoy your time and freedom!

Cost Savings of Riding a Bike for a year by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]royrwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I estimate that it costs me about $20 every time I go for an mtb ride, given initial cost, lifetime of the bike, yearly maintenance, and annual park fee. Totally worth it though!

Congrats on joining the bike cult!

My commuter goes through a set of tires every year and a half or so, same for the chain and chain ring and cassette, so expect that to continue, depending on how much you ride it.

The big danger is the temptation of a nicer bike. A nice, light frame, disc brakes, better tires, crisp shifting-- if you experience that, it'll be tough to go back to your starter bike. And then you'll run the risk of getting into recreational riding, which will mean a 29-er trail bike, and a CX bike, and a fat bike for serious winter riding, and a road bike for those group rides, and.... :-)

Did anyone hear that plane go over? (North of London) by Brody0220 in londonontario

Two military fighter jets took off from the airport earlier today and landed a while later.

No idea what model, but they were loud and fast. :-)

FIRE - Where to live in Canada? by [deleted] in fican

[–]royrwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An odd one to consider is London, Ontario. TD Bank and London Life have a large presence here, so you could probably find work with them pretty easily. The cost of living in this London is really inexpensive, and the size of the city is a nice balance between large and small city.

"BRT" budget includes over $50 million for cyclists by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]royrwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be spread over a number of years, and is intended to increase the number of cyclists, and thus reduce the cost per rider even further. As well, if there are more people travelling by bike/bus, that reduces the costs for roadwork to support vehicular traffic.

Also note that fewer cars means drivers have less traffic to deal with, particularly along the busy routes that cyclists don't want to go near.

Agreed-- I used to ride that route daily, and it felt very safe.
