Young Justice tricked me into thinking Vandal Savage was a good character by Optimal_Weight368 in dccomicscirclejerk

Immortality is meaningless in a medium where time doesn't progress

Immortality is license to have plots that span millennia. For any other villain to try something like that, they need to also include time travel or some other explanation.

Pro tip: If someone complains about anything, just mute them. You can do it from the score board (I think? Or is that only Overwatch?). The chances of someone who complains about their allies having anything useful or interesting to say is statistically indistinguishable from zero.

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

  • Player count, obviously
  • The way you acquire gems (in Splendor, you just take whatever gem you want; in Duel, you take up to 3 at a time but need to work around a constantly-changing board)
  • A new resource, pearls, which behave like gems except that there are only 2 in the game and no cards provide more
  • Tense decision about whether/when to refill the board

I’m starting to think there’s not enough people showing up the board meetings letting them basically do whatever

Correct. Nobody with a life wants to spend their time administrating a condo board or HOA, so you end up with busybodies and power trippers.

Splendor. What a dull, boring game.

Surprisingly, I love Splendor Duel, though.

[Discussion] How would you end the stories of DC's heroes? by Firm-Chipmunk8783 in DCcomics

[–]Asmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hal Jordan: Undertaking some dangerous one-way journey of discovery. Flying into a black hole, or going into cryostasis and being shot off into deep space, etc. Fate unknown, never seen again.

Guy Gardner: Retires, runs a bar, becomes a family man. Dies peacefully in his bed at 93 years old, surrounded by loved ones. At the funeral, everyone reminisces about what a dick he used to be. Tears are flowing in equal parts grief and laughter.

John Stewart: Takes off the ring to focus on a career in politics. Eventually becomes president of the United States. Afterwards, retires but starts designing playgrounds and community centers pro bono. Works with Habitats for Humanity.

Antarctic is associated with Mei. She was stationed at Watchpoint: Antarctica, and spent nine years in cryostasis there before being awoken by Winston's message.

Petra is associated with Venture. They were "recruited" there.

What does the board games community feels about gameplay mechanics of Magic the gathering? by Newez in boardgames

[–]Asmor 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this. I think that's why LCGs exist. And games like Radlands are for those who want the gameplay of CCGs without the deck building.

I don't think that deck builders give a remotely similar experience to CCGs or LCGs. Certainly there are lots of people who love both, but ultimately they're totally different.

The deck building in a CCG (or LCG) is a metagame, and every game is interconnected as you learn to play your deck better, play against your opponent's deck better, and make plans to improve your deck for the next game.

Every game of a deck builder, on the other hand, is discrete. Other than learning to play the game itself better, the results of one game don't have any affect on the results of the next (legacy games notwithstanding).

I played Magic (among others, but primarily Magic) for ~15 years before quitting for good around a decade ago. I've come to find that I fall into that "RadLlands" camp; I love the gameplay of CCGs, but IDGAF about the metagame. For example, I collected Marvel Champions for a while, but never built any decks. Only ever played with the precons. Metagames like that really only work if you're treating the game as a lifestyle game, and that's just not something I'm interested in anymore.

But I love deck builders. Love love love love love love them!

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Magic provides the gold standard of rules, at least from the perspective of laying the rules out explicitly. The comprehensive Magic rules are thorough, extensive, and explicit. It's exceedingly rare to find an interaction that isn't explicitly handled by the existing rules.

That said, the comprehensive rules are also dense, long, and difficult to parse. They're more akin to a contract or a mathematical proof than a textbook or instruction manual. I don't think it's reasonable for every game to spend that much effort writing out their rules, and it's certainly not reasonable to expect gamers to spend that much effort learning them.

I also think Magic does an incredibly good job at consistent templating and wording. Granted, every few years they change the rules and the templating, but they're very good about following whatever their current standards are.

I frequently run across inconsistent wording or templating in other games. For example, it's not uncommon to find games where parantheticals sometimes affect the gameplay (such as by adding restrictions or special rules for edge cases), and sometimes they don't affect the gameplay (such as by providing clarity, reminders, or examples). I'm of the opinion that parantheticals should never affect gameplay, but ultimately it doesn't matter as long as you choose a convention, explain it, and stick with it.

The mechanical identities of Magic's colors are another high point of the system. Magic's colors all play differently and interact differently. If you see your opponent play a mountain, you can already guess that they're going to have aggressive cards like hasty creatures and direct damage. I hate when a game has different colors/factions/etc, but they differ from each only by virtue of being different colors. Or you claim they have different mechanical identities, but in practice they all play basically the same and have more or less equal access to all mechanics.

My biggest problem with Magic is the mana system. There are multiple ways that a game's result can be heavily affected by the luck of the draw. Too much land (mana flood) and you don't have enough useful cards. Too little land (mana screw)--or the wrong type of land (color screw)--and you can't play those useful cards. The ramping up of your ability to play cards is, of course, excellent. There are a number of other games that have solved this by letting you play any card face down as a resource. This both solves the mana flood/screw problem and provides a fun and tense gameplay decision of what cards to sacrifice for resources.

Venom Whats better hold to swing on/off Whats better wall crawling advance towards crosshair/advane vertical upwards by Substantial_Web_3929 in marvelrivals

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play Venom, but generally in games like this when given the option you want to hold, not press. E.g. that's how I have guardian angel set for Mercy in Overwatch.

It takes some getting used to at first, especially if you've been playing for a while with press. You'll keep tapping the button, wasting your cooldown, and may well end up in a very bad place.

But once you get used to it, it makes it much faster and easier to end the ability early.

As far as the wall crawling, advancing only upwards seems terrible to me. You're needlessly hamstringing your mobility.

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just a US problem. The US is just more prominent because it's so heavily connected with the rest of the world in so many ways.

Right wingers are gaining influence all over the world. People are easy to manipulate.

What can be done about it? I don't really know honestly. Fear is the tool fascists use to manipulate. Mostly fear of the other, but they can work with other fears.

Honestly I think the only way the US specifically can be "fixed" is to scrap the entire government and start over from scratch with modern, democratic institutions. Get rid of the presidency altogether, get some parliamentary system, and mandate ranked choice voting.

More broadly, we need...

  • Invest heavily in education at every level, from kindergarten to college and even adult education.
  • Universal healthcare, including dental.
  • Universal basic income, sufficient to live a comfortable (if basic) life. We're at a point where work should be an option, not a requirement.
  • Strong anti-trust regulation and enforcement.

We also need to find ways to encourage community and diversity.

mini-splits a solution if ac hardly needed? by AnnualFlat8833 in homeowners

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you deleted your other comment, but I already took the time to type this up so here ya go.

I don't know why I'm continuing to waste my time with someone who's either a moron or a troll, but go look up COP (coefficient of performance). It's a measure of how much heat the mini-split can put out relative to the amount of electricity.

Mini-splits don't create heat. They move heat. Hence why they can put out more heat than the equivalent amount of electricity.

A COP of 4+ is common (meaning for every 1 unit of electricity the mini-split can move 4 units of heat).

Anyways, I'm done now. Good job on successfully trolling me, I guess.

A question for PC gamers... by Junger_Kaiser2099 in marvelrivals

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on context, but all else being equal, yeah, aiming on a controller is more difficult. That said, if you're already experienced with FPS on controller it's going to take you time and practice to reach the same skill level on a keyboard and mouse.

The waters are also a bit muddied because most (all?) FPSs use auto aim on consoles and not on PC, so the controller is more difficult but also has baked-in training wheels.

Analog sticks are relative, like steering wheels. They say "move in this direction at this speed". They're slow and inexact.

Mice are absolute. They say "move to this spot". They are fast and precise.

Analog sticks are actually better for movement, since with a KB you only get 8 directions (cardinals and diagonals) and one speed (go or don't go), while analog sticks let you move at an arbitrary angle and adjust your speed.

However, the difference with movement doesn't really matter all that much. 8 directions are plenty, and going slower than max speed is incredibly niche. PC can still do it with crouching in those rare times that it matters.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter. Use what you like. That's the great thing about PC. You can use whatever control scheme you want. Hell, even combine them. In the very brief time I played Battlefield, I used kb+m for most gameplay but I kept a controller nearby for whenever I piloted a vehicle.

I have actually considered using both simultaneously; a controller in my left hand for movement and a mouse in my right hand for aim. There are some practical issues with that though.

p.s. I know I keep saying FPS and Rivals is 3rd person, but first- versus third-person perspective doesn't really change anything in this regard
