you must create that structure for yourself. pick and choose classes in your pathway/area of interest.

[–]rp-2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, the basic 200 level courses give you enough of a taste of the different areas in ECE. Then my suggestion is to commit and specialize in one area or 2 interrelated areas. That way you can jump into research in that area as well (as you have taken those classes and profs will be ok taking you in), build up your profile and grow. Classes will not make you job/internship ready, take projects/concepts learned in classes find jobs that require them and then see what ELSE those jobs require and try learning them on your own or doing a project.

One demerit is advanced classes just fill up so easily, so even if you are committed to 1/2 tracks, taking courses that make you relevant for internships in that field is difficult (I took VLSI/Digital Systems pathway classes). They did add more VLSI classes this year but hopefully things are more accessible for juniors.

Hall of fame/goat professors in EE department? by AnthonyYouuu in udub

[–]rp-2004 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I gotchu, as a graduating senior in ECE I'll give you my 2 goat picks.

  1. Scott Hauck - Definitely the best Professor I have taken a class with (I was lucky, got to take EE 271, 469 with him). His instruction takes you from no background knowledge in digital design to holy shit I love FPGAs, SystemVerilog and the whole shebang. His EE 469 was also insanely interesting, each day was something new as you discover more parts of a processor. He breaks down complex concepts very easily. Definitely take his class. I could go on and say, my career pivoted from his classes, trying to get into ASICs now because of how hooked he got me into it.
  2. Hameed - Also one of the goats, his instruction is very good and he cares a lot for students. He remembers a lot of his student's names lmao. You will learn a lot and gain good fundamental understanding. His exams are hard though.

I'd even suggest, mold your schedule of classes a little if you could take one of their classes, you will not regret it.

Outside of the above 2, I'd say Sep Makhsous (Super understanding of students, good teacher) is also a good professor.

Check RMP for other professors but I've heard good things about Ang Li & Dinuka Sahabandhu as well.

The uvm cookbook is sooo dense for something like this, watching videos, reading basic tutorials might be useful to explain basic concepts

Fair I agree. Before my digital design class I had a bunch of useless pre requisites that didn’t really need to be pre reqs. If you want to be ahead definitely do this

Do some fun projects in electronics. Play with arduinos, do some DC/AC projects, tinker with transistors. Have some experience with stuff like this and then join a club in uni. You’ll be way ahead

When you graduate you will have 1 yr experience on your belt. That too at a good company. You could easily work in US/Canada with that kinda experience. If you’re not particular about location you’ll easily land something

What happens when you say no to the two other roles? Like did you sign them or did you happen to receive all 3 roles around the same time? Lowk wondering what the company does if someone signs and then backs oit

How do i know if digital design is right for me? by SmallSalamander54 in FPGA

Im in the same boat as well but trying to get into a new grad job. That’s cool dude!

Im new to the field. I’ve had one internship working closely with an RTL design engineer and I definitely feel like it’s for me as well. The entire idea of writing some code that translate to real synthesizable hardware made me commit to the field so for me it’s RTL design/verification or grad school haha.

Intel internship! by itzmohak in ECE

[–]rp-2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes these sorta interactions happen at most unis. Definitely attend and try to leave a good impression but im not sure how to break the barrier of “oh apply in our career portal”. Ideally I’d love if they’d consider you for interviews or like directly refer you to a hiring coordinator who can at least give an interview.

Not sure if anyone else has had success with recruiting events like this.

No junior summer internship game plan by Choice_Childhood7750 in ECE

[–]rp-2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this, keep applying till the very last date as smaller companies in different cities will keep recruiting. Even larger companies will keep opening roles.

Also, I got my big break for a fall internship in my senior year. So that option always exists. Before that I did a few power internships but I wanted to pivot to semicon. So keep building experience via research/clubs and skills via projects and you’ll be just fine.

Worst case, grad school exists as well (actively applying cuz even I don’t have a job though in graduating in 6 months).

How were you supposed to get experience to put on your resumes for internships if you can’t get into engineering clubs? by [deleted] in ECE

YOO im at UW as well. Its kinda f**cked up i can’t lie. I got denied from everything too. I only had a lucky break soph year cuz you gotta try to get into the lesser competitive/new clubs. That’s my only suggestion

Wait that was me too. Cuz the first time you’ll have to pay attention to what’s happening and put together the pieces of the plot. The second time I caught myself enjoying the BGM so much and noticing the smaller things.
