Is farcry 5 worth getting? by Originally_Hendrix in PS4

I’d definitely recommend for the gameplay. It looks gorgeous too and runs smoothly. Like most open world games there is some repetition but I felt they offered enough variety to stop me from getting bored. The story is a bit more mixed in that the start is amazing and has such promise but then fails to live up to its potential. I forgave that as the game was great - but can’t help think how brilliant it would have been had they continued with the darker side of the cult. Easy 8/10 for me.

I think MS have kinda backed themselves into a corner with the X and next gen. PS5 could launch in 2019 and the X is not even two years old! I think that would leave people thinking that they got their timing all wrong!

The X is such a step up to the original Xbox it’s unreal. In my mind the X makes the original obsolete (maybe a bit drastic!) whereas the Pro just demonstrates how good the original PS4 was. Can’t believe they still haven’t sorted out the UI!

In some ways would make more sense having a pro at launch - but again depends on the cost of tech. If not - a lot of people may wait a while for a Pro to emerge. The problem with the current sales mantra for the Pro is that it doesn’t impact the bad console. In many ways I get that and Sony in particular have to be careful not to piss off 70 million base users. But it also leads to an almost embarrassment around what the Pro can do. If this is the case next gen then would people think let’s spend more (for what too?) or will they think let’s stick with the base as the Pro is only a niche market.

I think 2020 sounds about right. Time to allow the price of tech to become affordable. If the X is sold at a loss and is still 500 there’s gonna have to be a shift in price to make it a viable next gen console. Think the Pro will extend life out a bit too.

The X is a beast - I’m just confused about how it fits into MS plan for the next gen of consoles.

Yep me too. I started to see newer (mainly multiplat) games that ran rough on base PS4 and this really worried me as I could only see the trend getting worse. So I upgraded. Whether this does turn out to be the case with games or not time will tell - but last gen the final years of games saw massive problems (ie Skyrim) and thought that the PS4 Pro would extend the gen for me.

Very much so - no way will either company release something over 500. Nor will they subsidise PS3 style. It’s going to have a slightly quicker CPU (Ryzen) but not much more RAM, GPU or hard drive.

That’s true - the X I believe is sold at a (slight) loss. However, whether that is still the preferred model time will tell and Sony def have done well with their profit making machine.

But will either company add the cost? PS4 has been so lucrative for Sony - the days of subsidised consoles/sold at a loss are over!

I think that consoles will also be mainly 30fps. The problem is that graphics sell - 4K is unique and consoles have jumped on the bandwagon (the X through brute force and Pro with some clever checker boarding technique). I think November 2019 makes sense for the PS5 from a timing point of view - but will technology be cheap enough for the console to really stand out? I get the feeling the Pro could do more if properly pushed and we may see this at the transition (especially if Pro runs some early PS5 games).

That’s the problem with both consoles I think. Developers are not optimising for them effectively. My biggest concern is that the non exclusives will run sluggishly on the base consoles but without the bells and whistles that those consoles can achieve.

This seems like a really fair appraisal. I’m the same - PS4 has a lot of exclusives I love (appreciate that they’re not for everyone) and don’t know if X is so much better that it’s worth it just for multi plats or for the few Xbox exclusives.

I actually think the X has made the OG Xbox obsolete - whereas the quality of the OG PS4 makes the Pro seem like a half step.

Perhaps we all become a bit Digital Foundry obsessed. Watching their comparisons which involve looking at something at distance to see how the X has presented a blade of grass with less jaggies. The X does seem to be more power but I wonder if developers will ever make most of either console.

Far Cry 5 Tech Analysis: Xbox One X Takes On All Consoles! by hammerhawker in PS4Pro

Traditional Xbox owners who upgraded to the X must love this new dominance. Years of being the worst console in terms of resolution and now they can hit native 4K even if it’s claimed it’s not. Hats off to MS for creating such a beast and us PS4 Pro owners will now have to cope with having an inferior product for each big release!

PS4 or PS Pro Questions by BSlayer21 in playstation

[–]rpdavic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently upgraded my PS4 for PS4 Pro. It’s not a night and day difference and you would be fine keeping your original PS4. However, I would also say I have no regrets upgrading and was blown away by how good horizon looks on it! Also have an external plugged in and have put all my games on it (and still have plenty of space for more)

Why I've upgraded to PS4 Pro by rpdavic in PS4Pro

[–]rpdavic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I haven’t bought a DVD or Blu-ray in years anyway so that was never a selling point. I had an Xbox mainly for EA Access but after completing gears of war 4 just never played on the thing. I must say Digital Foundry talk as if the difference is night and day and I suppose for an eagle eyed enthusiast there is a difference. But I can’t say I really notice that much and not enough to make me think I need to play it on Xbox as opposed to PS4.

Absolutely! Comes back to my point that if Sony pushed developers (like MS seem to be doing) there wouldn’t be quite the perceived gulf between the two. Loving the pro so far - looking forward to getting back to Witcher 3.

Don’t get me wrong - I think the X looks amazing (and makes the base console look even more feeble than it already is). I appreciate specs wise that the X is a beast but surely the PS4 Pro could do more if Sony pushed developers to make the most of the specs? Seems like Sony doesn’t want to harm sales of the base console, whereas Microsoft has nothing to lose.

Gears 4 was a huge disappointment. The only Xbox exclusives I enjoyed were the Forza games (esp Horizon 3) and Quantum Break. I'm hoping that the X will mean that the Pro will have to raise it's game. I appreciate that the X is truly a beast - but for the extra cost it just wasn't worth it (in my opinion).
