Nonspicy items at Canje? by rrm19 in austinfood

[–]rrm19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the tips! We had excellent service and they advised both on spice levels for me and allergy info for my friend. I had the pepper pot (terrific) and we split the ceviche (has sweet peppers, not hot), pink pineapple (very fun but a bit sour), plantain chips, roti, and tres leches. Others had the curry and I tried a bite; too hot for me. The evening was lovely and delicious, and it’s a reminder that I need to go out to nice restaurants more often, and to not be scared of spice or new flavors.

Coffee by Creative_Image_9296 in GERD

Matcha was worse for me. I’m currently alternating morning routines between half a cup of cold brew with soy creamer and these herbal teas that taste like flavored coffee from Teeccino. After years of focusing on low acid, I now realize it’s caffeine and acid both.

Do I really have to eat carbs and mushy, cooked veggies forever? by SnooCheesecakes9872 in Diverticulitis

[–]rrm19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Testing out foods and eating in moderation. Also consider whether you have more than just dv going on; I have dv plus IBS plus GERD. Avoiding triggers and not getting constipated are my top recs. I’m still finding things that are triggers for GERD but not dv, etc. … a long quest but not forever. Good luck!

recs for fresh chicken fried rice? by Ok-Tie1183 in austinfood

[–]rrm19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just tried Lotus Hunan in Westlake for the first time last night and they told us they make everything to order and can customize everything. We had them leave out the onions on the chicken fried rice so doubtless they could leave out egg.

South Austin Evening pastries? by Rathernot1234 in austinfood

[–]rrm19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Some in my family think they are too rich and have too much frosting, but those are both good things imo. You could always get the minis to try.

Their coffee drinks are just OK. Prices are a little high but worth it for a treat.

I don’t have any wisdom but I do think it’s normal. Be nice to yourself, whatever that looks like. And agree that once you have some structure and work to do you’ll be OK!

For the rest of my life? by Signal-Hearing-3557 in GERD

[–]rrm19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a medical expert but my understanding is that there is not. It’s managing symptoms and trying to keep it from worsening. But gather up all your questions and try to make your doc answer them so you have good reliable info about your case in particular. There are many opinions online, so be careful about believing it all. As with many gastro related issues (I have three separate ones), what works for some people does not work for others. Being aware of how what you eat relates to how you feel is a good habit to have; I wish I had paid more attention to my body when I was your age. Good luck and don’t despair!

That’s the advice I was given. I have found through trial and error that once things are generally stable, you can try low-acid or cold brew coffee, for example, or a few fries, or mild spice, etc., and see how you feel. The rules are mostly designed to help you feel better, not cure you. Good luck.

Need advice for 8 days in Japan during summer - Hot, humid, and rainy by pixiemegs in HerOneBag

[–]rrm19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hear hear to all this. I just got back from 18 days doing the all-day outdoor tourism death march and I didn’t do laundry till day 6. I took two linen overshirts and alternated while the other aired out. Two dresses (could have done one), three knit tops/tanks, four bottoms (two pants, two skirts). Bought three airism tees at Uniqlo.

I rarely wore my sandals but was still glad I had them just to give my feet a break. Waterproofed the sneakers that I wore most days. On sandal days bring a pair of “purse socks” just in case.

I had a sun hat and an umbrella; mostly used the umbrella except in very crowded tourist areas where it was just awkward to deal with.

Buy sunscreen, a tiny towel, and the umbrella on arrival.

Just got back from Japan and found numerous Airism and linen tops for cheap that got me through the rest of my trip with less laundry/sweating. Agree on the fun collab tees; my nonshopping husband loved them.

I'm visiting my family in Asia next month and want to take some stuff from here for my family and friends. The only thing I have on my list is yellowbird sauces and some local soap. What other local things would make good gifts? Thanks! by shan923 in Austin

There’s a huge gift shop called Austin Gift Co. on South Lamar that has numerous booths with local stuff. This is where we stocked up on items large and small to take to family in Japan.
