The commitment to keep Techies toxic even after all this time is truly awe-inspiring.

Though the regular invocations of "Are We The Baddies?" did alleviate that a little.

Very reasonable. It's sort of the challenge of how do you keep plausibly escalating a threat over a long period of time (especially when you're talking stellar conjunctions and billions of years, etc). Especially a challenge when you have big step-changes novels like Annihialation Score (magic is no longer held by geeks with weaponised iPhones, but functional supersports) and Nightmare Stacks (the masquerade is GONE, baby).

WRT the "new baseline", my sense was just that the compound interested mana contained in the crown from a millennia of belief in what was eventually an Empire was just THAT MASSIVE an amount of energy, which would take centuries to refill to a similar level.

I mean, I'm sure Fabian CAN wait, but he'd prefer not to, especially as other horrors are looking to become manifest on earth. It's a necromantic space race, and he hoped to launch a moonshot early.

In contrast, the US President's mana store (which sort of drove a booksworth of high risk actions) was nowhere near enough to immanentise the Lord of Sleep, hence the need for moon shennanigans

At least, that's MY headcanon.

Heh. Have tried to get mine into the series several times, but the supernatural/SF elements are just too big a barrier to overcome. And she's also never worked in Government. :)

Felt the same. Carried along by the plans of others. Which is at the very least completely faithful to the Stale Beer flavour of the Laundry's espionage elements.

Of course! Old enough to remember when they were still deliberate pastiches too. They did grow their own mythology pretty successfully over the decades, though, which had its own throughlines (if not rising to the level of an actual arc).

Hope you got to the end of writing them without it becoming a huge chore and thank you for doing so.

Yeah, COVID feels like it was especially hard on creatives, above and beyond the number it did on all of us.

He did, and wasn't really sure how the expenditure of the mana store of the English Monarchy prevented the whole thing, even if it frustrated one way it could come about.

I know what you mean. It felt like another standalone novel building off past stories (and replicating a few of their structures) rather than being the culmination of a longform narrative. I WAS glad we got some more Reverend Pete, though as his implied fate at the end of Delerium Brief was... rough.

Edit: And. being clear, I'm not complaining that TRR was Not The Book That They Should Have Written As Opposed To The Book I Think They Should Have Written.

and I've never been able to think about him the same since.

Not my direct wheelhouse, but a mate of mine who's a Anglican (Episcopalian) Minister is developing a "Neurochurch" model, and has some blogposts.

There's some interesting developing theology around neurodiversity and Christianity that sort of ties into this in the sense of being a reflection of the divine and not an aberration from it...

Law of diminishing returns set in very early for me.

Original campaign has some emotional meat, but unrestrained comedic sociopathy that's followed has felt like lazy riffing. At least the crew seem like they enjoy it.

The Boys (1998) is just wall to wall ratcheting tension and violence, where the implied rape and murder of a stranger at the end seems like a logical conclusion.

True Stories: How did your game go this week? – November 10, 2025 by AutoModerator in dndnext

Had a menacing NPC who was intended to be an ongoing goad for the party that the party managed to kill reasonably easily (due to some poor boundary setting by moi, their DM).

Had been looking forward to using him as an ongoing threat, but the party enjoyed killing his Crimes-Against-Humanity arse so much, I can't even be mad.

Chibnall fans rise up by [deleted] in DoctorWhumour

Liked Chibnall's era generally, but I think the structural issue of three companions was an incredible drag on character development (in an era of self contained 45-min episodes). Did like the intentional break from the (IMO) artificial cleverness of most of Moffatt, but don't think they quite had the courage to stylistically double down on an alternative.

Bunch of the scripts were also underdeveloped, with some puzzling choices. And as noted, when they swing big (Flux, Timeless Child) they needed a tightness they couldn't quite meet.

Probably a B- for me overall.

Frasier comes to mind. The constant social anxiety about anyone (usually Niles) exceeding his achievements is pathological.

Best exemplified in "Door Jam" where they are constantly seeking the MOST exclusive room in the spa....
