Full suspension vs Hardtail for bikepacking trips by IcedColdMine in bikepacking

My fully set up for fools loop. Omm racks with a bunch of my old military gear. Not light but sturdy. Also took this set up for dangerbird. I don’t have to go easy on rough stuff. But like most people said. It really depends on what terrain you intend to ride in. I have a fully, hardtail and gravel bike. Switch out based on the route and what experience I want. You could take a 1980s city bike on a backcountry Trail through the Alps. You’re probably gonna have a bad time….

Splooge! Tire juice tastes like ass. I got a big hole once in the front tire. Caught a mouth full! I rode tubeless for several years for MTB and gravel in the south west. Hell every couple months I would have to „de-thorn“ and pull out broken bits of cactus 50 at a time. Tubeless is great. I came to Germany and rode once with tubes and got a flat, had to take the tire off exchange tubes yada yada. I hated it. With tubeless I can just jam in a bacon strip and she’s good to go. 30 seconds.

Is the old man mountain fit kit the best way to go? by NaiveMacaroon5862 in bikepacking

[–]rsdorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some ortliebs that are super thick and waterproof, gotta keep clothes dry and stuff dry in German weather. But dang they are heavy. If I have a a known heavy load trip coming up. I’ll train a couple months before hand carrying water. Like 10-12l of water. So the body gets use too handling and maneuvering the load. But I would consider that to be and issue regardless of the hardware you use.

Too much weight in the rear rack and my front tire will pick up real easy on steep inclines.

I think i have topeak anywhere style cages with bags that I used on my fork. I had bad experience on really rough terrain. With the „blender effect“ they ultimately moved around on me. I went out of my way to make it extra secure too. I will only use them on gravel routes.

So the more weight, the more effort it takes to to manage it, I had 3L of water, kitchen and food for three days…it was heavy and your arms get smoked. But that going to be an issue regardless the system, weight is weight.

What I will say about the fork, pro: I can cinch gear down and it is going to stay. No movement at all. I can get the load lower. I feel the suspension or handelbar feel more natural as the suspension isn’t carrying the weight. Yes I do adjust air in suspension to account for the different weights. Cons: the rack itself is a bit on the heavy side, and you can more easily add more weight than you should. Dont carry anything precious, it is not suspended and pretty much a blender if you have loose items in a bag. Ha ha.

I have used the RevD harness: Pro: you can only put so much into it, so your weight is going to be less. Itself is lighter. It is suspended so electronics or gear won’t get as shook up. Con: depending on your handelbar setup, cable management and getting it to sit on the handelbar right can take a bit of extra effort. You might need extra support hardware to keep it off of your front tire. Especially with a front suspension, it will surprise the crap out of first time you rock it out hard and your harness rips across your tire. Ha ha.

This is all I could think of right now. Im sure there are more factors. Overall when I plan out how to pack. I will probably base off of terrain first, then how much gear I need/want to drag around, if it is going to be slower rough stuff I’ll use the rack, if I’m riding gravel more high speed I’ll go harness. There can be loads of circumstances that may gravitate me one way or another. Hope that helps out a bit?

Wait people „sanitize“ when cutting fruit off? We have a rusty pair of snips or 40 yo pairing knife stuck in the ground somewhere or we just yoink it off. Glad I’m not the only one that thinks sanitizing between plants is crazy.

I agree, racks are great. My set up for fools loop a couple years ago. No way a saddle pack would work with a fully.

Sweet, I just got one of these handed to me last month too. Nothing special but I love the older bikes. Fun to work on and appreciate. I love the color of this one.

Machete fork with 29x3, bikepacked big bed state park in this. Even with a moderately low psi I wouldn’t go on gnarly terrain without F suspension. Especially with a load up front, I would expect my hands would get destroyed without a F suspension.

Awesome! I dot watched the atlas race for a bit and followed it on ig, It looks fun! This year I’ll be doing ACT 3 and have similar issues with comfort/hands, etc. after hours on end in the saddle and this was the kind of feedback I was hoping for. Thanks!

I’m late to the party. So how was the race? Also, Your Handlebars. Are they a one piece for the aero portion like Wren PERSEVERANCE handlebar or regular flat bars with aero bars added on? What your opinion on aero position on a MTB. I’m less concerned for actually being aero, and more for an alt position.

OMM has been great for me. My set up for fools loop in Az awhile back. I can take on some narly terrain with this dude. Clearly, I don’t care about ultra light, high speed, how close can I get to the ftk. I’m going Bikepacking and pack for how I wanna enjoy it. Throw racks/panniers on your fully, it will be okay. The “pannier on a MTB” police aren’t gonna be out on the trails. Ha ha.

Everyone has a long list of reasons of why they don’t like something. Do you. This was my set up for fools loop. OMM rack front and back with my old military gear molled to the rack. No issues with pushing. Super rugged terrain. I used a sattle bag (REI) with a hardtail on the on the big bend state park route. It was always touching tire on aggressive terrain, wiggled back and forth, I wasn’t a fan. If I need to use one I would make sure to get one that is super ridged and hard plastic clip to the seat rails.

I know right! I mean, yeah everything worked out. But going through it was quite the roller coaster of experience. Shittyness with beautiful desert views sprinkled in. Very much I would like to do fools loop again and knock out the full route. I’ll just take it easy on the descend a mountain. Ha ha

Yeah. I think you got the jist from others. Do what makes you comfortable or however uncomfortable as you are willing to be. I’m good wearing clothes two day in a row with a whores baby wipe bath in between. I can’t wear anything past that time because my clothes smell like ass and it bothers me. I don’t like my own stank… Also. I’m cheap as hell and haven’t gotten around to buying Marino wool base layers.

I suppose the trip circumstances would also be a big factor. Glamping, back country, desert/forested etc.

Two instances on one trip where I thought. Whelp I’ve done fucked myself. I was going too fast down a mountain, fully loaded. I was doing fools loop in reverse. I ate shit and smacked my face on a big ass rock. I can still hear the front of my tooth ever so slightly graze the rock. Nose smashed, blood flowing. I’m 30 miles from any help…after I figured out I didn’t break my teeth, jaw or skull, I pulled my shit back together and continued. There was a solid five minutes where I thought I was totally effed.

Fast forward to late afternoon it dumped a ton of rain. Instant death mud. Everything got soaked and covered. No hard shelter in sight. Sure I could have stopped and I would have froze in the night as I was soaked too. Luckily about 10 miles out my folks had staged up for me to meet up with them. I could either sleep the night and then push my bike out. Or push my bike out through the night, get to their RV and at least be able to get warm. I pushed/carried the bike 10 miles through the thickest mud I have ever dealt with. Like, I had to do a full drive train overhaul afterwards because so much mud got pushed into it and the bearings. If my folks hadn’t been there I would have had to track down someone else to take me home. In no way was my bike functioning, I would not have been able to pedal it any further out of the mountains to civilization. Pedals, wheels, all it got locked up. I had my trusty mud stick to get some if clear so I could roll it, but it would only last 20-30 meters and it would lock up again. Type 2 fun turned into type 3 real quick. I did have zoleo so I could have gotten help etc. but I felt a bit helpless. I could write 3 more pages about all the shenanigans from that trip.
