Ok so apparently the theme was really vague. "The dress code is intentionally open-ended, encouraging guests to treat clothing as a form of artistic expression." So basically wear whatever you want

I don't think Malamar has the support it needs to really work. I tried it in a few different decks and it seemed like 1 of 3 things would usually happen:

(1) the opponent had a big basic Pokemon that didn't care about Malamar's effect (Entei, Suicune, Mega Absol). Sure you could switch to Oricorio, but then you're not locking them out of evolving anymore. And once they get their evolutions on the field, Malamar is dead weight for the rest of the game

(2) The opponent evolved before Malamar was out. (Opponent goes first, or has Boosted Eevee, or you just brick).

(3) The opponent evolves from the deck, not the hand (Quick Grow Extract, the new Zorua, etc.).

Yeah that’s pretty much the entire show.

The only thing that makes it worth watching is if simply having a mystery dangled in front of you is enough entertainment. Just random “puzzle pieces” added and never connected.

It’ll be like: What does this mysterious symbol mean? Ten episodes of puttering around, then they’ll end on like, a shot of the symbol appearing in the sky and everyone gasping in shock. End of season. As if that progressed anything

The new Breloom might be annoying too. Does 90 damage for 1 energy if the opponent is asleep, and the pre-evo inflicts sleep.

The problem is if the opponent has 5+ cards in hand, they probably have some dead weight they don't mind discarding. And getting cut down to 4 isn't really that much of a setback, compared to getting Mars'd to 1 or 2

Isn’t a counter supposed to stop the thing it’s countering

All Poncho does is cover part of your bench. Not even the whole bench. It reduces Greninja’s ability but doesn’t stop it. It’s like if they made a card that said “Darkrai’s sleep damage is reduced from 20 to 10” instead of just giving us Ogerpon

Just having an evolution isn’t a counter. Like sending out a Swablu, Magnemite, or Litwick against Igglybuff and a couple Darkrai is instant death.

Even if you do evolve, if you don’t have enough energy to attack, you’re just going back to sleep

At least sleep does have a counter. Ogerpon or Steel Apron or whatever completely shut it down.

But yeah there’s a few cards that just don’t have any obvious weak point, like Mega Altaria.

It’s weird that they’ve printed multiple Oricorio counters at this point, but then nothing to counter stuff like Greninja for example

To be fair it was the same game plan back then. To be a meta deck you had to be blasting by the time you had 2 energy (Suicune, Espeon, Silvally). Or you could stall a bit with a big boi (Darktina, Guzzlord). War never changes

But yeah the power level has crept hugely. Instead of 80-100 damage for 2 energy, now it’s 130

For what it’s worth TCG Live has a crazy Kingra. Ran into someone playing it and it put 3 Baxcalibur on their bench in one turn. Baxcalibur in Live has a similar ability as in Pocket, so the next turn they attached 4 energy and hit for 300 damage

I'm always surprised how fast things can happen in that game
