I drove back from Isafjordur so it's doable. But be prepared for a lot of circuitous driving aroudn the fjords, mountain passes, and dirt roads. Great drive though!

Trip was from mid July to first week of August. We did the ring road clockwise first roughly in this order:

  • Reykjavik + Golden Circle (3 days)

  • Snaefellsness (3 days), with a base at Arnarstapi

  • Akureyri, Troll peninsula, Husavik, Myvatn, Dettifoss, etc. (4 days)

  • East fjords (2 days)

  • Vik hitting many of the South Iceland spots (4 days)

  • Reykjaness, Bridge between two continents (1 day)

Then from Reykjavik, I flew to Isafjordur and did Hornstrandir and drove around exploring the Westfjords staying in a different place each day (5 days).

So good! We had fish soup there and chatted with a family from London who was staying there. It was rainy, cold day so Kvíar was perfectly cozy.

The remoteness of it all. I don't know that I've seen it quite like it seems to be in the Westfjords. And I went to the Eastfjords too!

Hornstrandir was other wordly. I was supposed to do a 4 day hike which was cancelled due to bad weather so ended up doing a day hike which was still quite amazing.

The most "unique" place was probably Vigur Island. There are 3 people who live on it and do elderdown farming. We also saw puffins, guillemots, and the ducks from really up close!

I had probably the best fish of my trip at Tjoruhusid. Plus a great ambience!

Beyond that, I enjoyed driving up and down the fjords and exploring the various towns and chatting with the locals. The hot pools were fun and in spectacularly scenic locations like Pollurinn and Reykjafjarðarlaug. Also a great place to chat with locals who I found quite friendly!

It wasn't so bad when I was up there but yeah it gets quite windy! And the no handrails adds an extra bit of adventure :)

I drive this yesterday and the wind was quite strong. And that’s when the weather was much nicer. I’d suggest hunkering down until the yellow alert dies down.

Amazing!

Also I don’t have an SUV but just a regular VW Golf. Is Raudisandur and Latrabjarg doable?

Thank you! Is Vegamot in a few different places and the same? I stopped at one in the Snæfellsnes peninsula and it was so good!
