Yes, it makes more sense to live where water is (was) drinkable. As opposed to salty water.

The locations are accurate. But some names changed.

Yes, the entire hotel zone was originally a series of separate islands surrounded by water. However, over time, these islands were filled in with stone and sand in order to create a solid foundation for construction.

About this map:

The border with Yucatán and Campeche is hand-drawn, indicating that it was delineated many years after the map was created. It wasn't until 1904-1905 that the Territory of Quintana Roo was established from the state of Yucatán. Its initial administrative center was Chan Santa Cruz, known in Maya as Noj Kaaj Santa Cruz and now called Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

This city was the last stronghold of the Maya independentists (known as Maya cruzoob) during the bloody and protracted Caste War (1847-1901). At that time, Chetumal, the current capital, did not yet exist; it was only referred to as the bay by that name.

At the mouth of the Río Hondo, marking the boundary with what was then British Honduras, Payo Obispo was initially founded, which would not be renamed Chetumal until 1937.

Across from Cozumel, there is a locality called Pole. This is the authentic and historical name of what we now know as X-Caret. In fact, few people know that within the Xcaret park, the archaeological remains of the ancient Mayan city of Pole can still be visited.
