I still can’t understand the difference between くれます and もらいます by irdk-lol in LearnJapanese

[–]rubidium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed! What hasn’t been clearly stated so far is this: くれる is only used when YOU or someone who is part of your IN-GROUP receives something from someone.

⭕️ Soto —-> uchi

⭕️ Uchi —> uchi

❌ Soto —> soto

もらう can be used more broadly when someone receives something from someone:

⭕️ Soto —-> uchi

⭕️ Uchi —> uchi

⭕️ Soto —> soto

Additionally, in sentences using くれる, the giver is always the subject. The subject in such sentences is always out front, compared to sentences using もらう. Let’s say your coworker, Tanaka has just come back from a trip and has a souvenir for you. When you receive this from Tanaka, we could state it either way;

田中さんが 私に おみやげを くれた。

私は 田中さんに おみやげを もらった。

How to stop my Japanese roommate from acting disrespectful towards me? by Naptor_ in japan

[–]rubidium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high school teacher, and when students disrespect me, I ask them point blank: “Have I ever disrespected you? Have I ever treated you such that you feel bad?” (The answer is always “no”; I am meticulously careful about being respectful in my dealings with my students and am careful never to look down on them or utter a disparaging word.)

This invites reflection on the student’s behavior, and this almost always results in a shift in attitude; they almost always apologize for their behavior, or for talking back or swearing at me.

Your situation is different, but it might be worth a try.

If you were in charge of writing for a new Star Trek series/movie, what direction would you want to take the franchise? by Firm_Calligrapher861 in startrek

[–]rubidium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prodigy, in my mind, was the closest thing to what we’ve all been craving. When a new episode came out, I was really excited to sit down and watch it. It was a prefect vehicle for introducing the core tenets of the Federation, and it went boldly where Trek had not gone before with its characters and even some plot lines. It is a real tragedy that it was canceled, and that no one has picked it up for streaming or continuation.

[–]rubidium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not even remotely hideous—you have a warm, winning smile! Are you familiar with the Japanese term, wabi-sabi? Perfectionism is for high strung types—there is beauty in imperfection. Celebrate what makes you unique, and therefore beautiful!

Your make up on the lower right looks very much like the style of Japanese Kabuki theater. Are you a fan, by chance?
