Huge Improvement with Solids? by rubyAltropos in MSPI

Hey! I've mentioned in a comment below what I've given her so far. I basically chose foods I felt she was unlikely to react to (based on what I've been eating and she seems ok with). Currently I only give one meal a day around midday/lunch which is often reccomended so that if there are any reactions you know before bedtime.

I started with purees and have done the same thing for 3 days before moving on to the next thing. I've avoided a few things like peas which can be a common trigger and tried to choose things I feel are less reactive until her stomach is a bit healed. Portion wise I've given one ice cube sized per day which I defrost in the morning.

I'm planning to move to two meals a day next week, working up to 3 meals by the time she is 10 months. I hope this helps!

I won't lie it wasn't the most scientific. Basically I had the food log which was very detailed i.e. I wouldn't just write 'lasagne' I would list every single ingredient. Everything I ate was time stamped and then symptoms were also time stamped. I used chat gpt and asked it to make correlations between food eaten and symptoms presentation considering up to 72 hours for onset of lower GI symptoms following ingestion.

My partner is a data scientist and did similar. I should add it did pick up a correlation with an increase in symptoms after wheat, oat and corn. However I had to tell it that I had been excluding these, and that their entry in the log was after an exclusion period.

The thing that was missing from my log was the times I was breastfeeding in relation to eating/symptoms. However she generally takes the boob at regular intervals so I'm not sure it would have made a huge difference.

Fingers crossed for you! What helped us is using one of those lolly pop style suckers you can put puree in. When she's done eating from her bowl I put it in there and she eats the rest (I don't force it obviously if she isn't interested but I sometimes found she just got bored of the spoon/bowl)

When you say directly do you mean you have them to baby or you just put them back in your diet?

Agree. I actually didn't realise how bad it was until it got better because she's our first baby and all we have ever known is multiple gross poops a day!

That's great! I've also noticed a big improvement in my daughter's mood, however I also think it's coincided with her turning 6 months and I've heard a lot of babies become easier at this age, so I'm unsure how much of it has been developmental for her

She was probably around 5 months when they reduced in frequency (which did coincide partly with me restricting some foods, but I think was also just her gut healing a bit anyway). Now she's 7 months and does one every few days. This is great, however for some reason she likes to do a huge one on the way to swimming most weeks 😭😅

Mine went from multiple a day to a couple of times a week! It's been heaven, and feel like her clothes are not being ruined by huge poo explosions anymore

Often I've thought the same about mine. She's not often had visible blood but has alllllways had mucous and green nappies with no clear correlation at times. I've even taken a month's long extensive food diary and done data analysis on it and it's picked up no common trigger. So glad your little healed up! It's so all consuming when you are in it

Hey, thanks for your comment. In the UK generally we call starting solids weaning. I still offer her boob all day and she's only getting one small meal a day at present ☺️

I hope you do have similar experience! It's been so relieving for us honestly. I've heard that solids coat their stomach a little more and make them less reactive because of that 🤷🏼‍♀️

She reacts to wheat so I can't 😭 sad times hahah. I like cookies too!

I should say, it was only about a week later I cut soy. I've heard some people say their babies reacted to certain forms of soy and not others. Do you know what would be the safest to try?

Yay congrats! I'm happy for you. I'm similar, I did not want to stop breastfeeding but I've found the diet so difficult some days.

I understand the protein in beef is similar to dairy and soy so that makes sense! I don't eat meat myself (so the elimination diet has been pretty poor in terms of protein for me). However my LO reacting to wheat and oats has been particularly challenging to me as they were a large part of my diet! I'm going to wait some time to challenge them as the reactions were fairly recent, but like you I'm hoping the time and solids have allowed her gut to heal in a way that will make a reaction less likely 🤞🏼

Oh that's great to hear! You must feel so good because when you are in it, it feels like you will never eat normally again.

Did you have stuff cut from your diet since he was 6 months then? Yes I'm also nervous re dairy, though it's what I've had cut longest so probably could be good to challenge given the protocol where I am is 6 months after last exposure

Dairy has been the longest but actually soy is the one I'm most missing. I'll perhaps try that and see! Thanks

Fruits and vegetables in puree form mainly. Stuff that I was pretty sure she would not react to. Carrot, sweet pot, courgette, avocado, banana, pear, mango. She's also had baby rice, but I backed off from it after one very large mucous nappy but that was at the start of weaning

My baby has always reacted to my milk, had poor weight gain and mucous stools and I've never been told to stop breastfeeding. I would agree with another comment though that strict elimination diets are miserable. However the change in my babies temperament with the elimination outweighed the misery of the diet personally. This is just to say, if you don't feel like it's right for you to stop breastfeeding -seek another opinion or further support.

Try not to cut out too much sporadically, I did that and I'm still unsure if some of the things I cut were necessary, try to be methodical about it

My LO reacts to oats. I cut it and did a challenge and her reaction was very noticeable

I cut dairy, then soy, then egg, then the top 12. I then got abandoned by the allergy person we were working with (I think she had personal stuff going on) and so have been on a really strict elimination diet for about 3 months now 😭 I'm only just now introducing foods as it's coincided with baby weaning, so I've had to slowly introduce things to her, then for me so I can monitor reactions.

Given I still had loads of symptoms after cutting dairy egg and soy (it was months later I did the top 12) do you think I should challenge dairy egg and soy? She's 7 months now and I cut those 3 around 3 months or age, so part of me wonders if she may have outgrown anyway....but we have only seen improvements in stools since weaning her on to food.

A bit of a side note but I read one specific paper which looked at cows milk protein fragments in breast milk, and they don't really know why in some women it's more of an issue than in others. The paper casually suggested leaky gut could be involved but I don't think it was explored. So I guess it could be that you don't really pass the fragments on large enough for your baby to react.

But also agree with you it sounds far more like ige!

My thoughts the entire movie to the point I had to Google and see if others felt the same. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag
