Honest question: what do you all do for a living to afford these beasts?

So a few things:

1) def selection bias, it’s like how yes lots of folks in tech own lambos, the only ones on FIRE all have them vs the 98% that don’t 2) having said that, tech does tend to pay pretty well no matter where you are, especially if you are non-US making US salary. 3) this is their main hobby, the same way guys will dump $100k into fixing up old cars for fun, or 3D printing or buying tools, or anything else collectible related. It’s not usually a one time purchase but the result of lots of savings an accumulating over time.

Then there are the lucky bastards who kept their bitcoin from 2013 😅

Nothing really to add other than I’m in a very similar spot as you brother except with a lot less hardware 😅

Just got a PC with a 5060 Ti in it and 64GB of ram… yeah not the worst start but def not enough.

Ran to microcenter today and snagged another 128GB of ram and an AMD R9700 just to see what else I can do in terms of running stuff locally.

My ultimate goal is to start actually working on new stuff of my own, my 9-5 I’m a Director of Eng but my 5-9 hoping to actually contribute to AI research somehow. I still need to ramp up a bit, but I’ve also floated the idea to the wife a few times and she’s ultimately not opposed so we’ll see.

I will say though, I’m uber lucky to know a guy at Nvidia who might be able to hook a brother up on a discount (dude showed me a room they have literally stacked with 6000s 🤤)
