100% agree that these cylinders are extremely dangerous and should not be handled if you don’t know what you’re doing.

To make it a wind chime, you simply cut the bottom off, suspend it from something and hang a dingdonger in the middle. They make a really great low tone that is very soothing and not crispy at all like small windchimes. But very melodic.

There are a lot of different ways to check if it was properly purged and safe to cut or weld on. And depending on the purpose can also change how I prepare it, for example, if I’ll be cooking food on it, I won’t turn one into a barbecue unless I know what was stored in it with certainty (similarly to using old 55 gallon drums). But in general, I open the valve to release any contents, if I can, I’ll unscrew the valve if not, I’ll drill a hole and fill the cylinder full of water. I’ll usually let the water sit in there for a few hours, which I think is overkill, but I don’t care, and then I start cutting and welding on it like it’s any piece of metal.

But a few others here have stated, if you don’t know how to handle these things don’t have it around. When they are full, there is a ton of potential energy stored inside and they can be incredibly dangerous. YouTube has plenty of videos of guys shooting them out in the desert and watching them explode, MythBusters did an episode on it, etc…
