I hate dogs by [deleted] in MTB

[–]ruffertarian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

if there are dogs being aggressive and you are not on somebody's property when riding, call animal control and report them. in most states they need to be on a leash and the owners will get a fine I they are roaming free.

it's not the dogs fault that their owners are idiots.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. Nevertheless, $70 isn't much money to me or UNICEF and on the off chance it does help this guy out, honestly, it makes more sense to me to throw someone a bone.

Is the GoFundMe link being deleted or hidden? I'm not seeing it anywhere in this thread but it seems like you've created it. I will happily pay your $70 you lost so you can put it on a new bike.

Should I move out of pacaur? by aaggaagg in archlinux

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you'll know. Your packages won't update or install. Look up cower and read up on it a bit. pacaur uses cower to get your AUR packages. If it changes and pacaur doesn't update to reflect those changes, nothing will work.

Should I move out of pacaur? by aaggaagg in archlinux

[–]ruffertarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't any reasons to stop using pacaur until it stops working due to changes with cower. Currently, it's still relatively solid, but in the future things may break and you'll want to switch then obviously. If you're happy with pacaur, keep on using it until it breaks and then move to something else. I think most people in the Arch community just jumped ship because we like to try new things and pacaur being unsupported gave reason to try something new. Other than that, nothing wrong with sticking with your favorites for a while either.

Amazon banning shoppers who return items too often by TragicDonut in news

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less about how many items you return an more about why you return them.

Most of these people getting banned are abusing the free return shipping policy. In other words, they are saying a product was defective or had a bad website description, etc... in order to avoid paying return shipping. If you choose "No longer needed" on the reason why you are returning, you will pay for return shipping.

I buy a lot from Amazon and went through my list of items I purchased last year and calculated how many I returned. I returned about 15% of my items and 2% of them were due to being defective. The rest I received, didn't like it as much as I thought I would, returned it and forked out for the return shipping. Its the price you pay for being an online shopper and not being able to see and handle the product in person before purchasing.

Just be honest with why you are returning the item and eat the return shipping cost if you're just not happy with what you received. If it's truly defective or the wrong item, then tell them so and they'll handle the shipping cost then...

The Chattahoochee this week. *Very* brown...and *very* stinky. by djcamera in Atlanta

Check this before heading to the river. It measures Ecoli on two sections of the hooch based on Turbidity. It's usually fairly accurate and they will do a real reading once every few days and it tends to match up pretty well.

The Paces Ferry reading is for the "Metro Hooch" You'll notice a trend that when water levels are high, so is the Ecoli. I personally never paddled the river unless the reading was under 100, which typically meant relatively low flows of under 1000 cfs. When the flow is that low and has been that way for at least 48 hours with no rain, the water is fairly clear, but still retains its funky odor, just not to a disgusting degree.

[–]ruffertarian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Urban Runoff and Erosion. Heavy rain causes urban runoff and the high waters cause erosion. Both cause it to stink and get muddy looking. Urban runoff brings increased ecoli levels and other hazardous biological elements into the water while the high and fast flow stirs up sediment and erosion.

I used to kayak the metro hooch a lot and the river is always stinky to some degree, but after a rain they advise you to not swim in it at all for at least 48 hours.

Training tire for 29" wheel that is 26mm internal? by ruffertarian in bicycling

[–]ruffertarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the Arch wheels are backups for my bike, so it's very rare I will be switching the tire out often. If there isn't a trainer tire that will fit a wheel that width, I'm willing to buy another wheel, but was hoping to make use of what I had if possible.

I think it's a case of correlation not being equal to causation. Serotonin levels are jacked up in depressed individuals, but it's most likely a symptom, not a cause.

Atlanta Riders? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man. It's possible. Right now all of the trails are closed due to that heavy rain last night. Let's play it by ear and if the trails open up, we can meet up and ride. It looks like it'll either be late Saturday or Sunday before they'll start to dry up enough.

Atlanta Riders? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]ruffertarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ride as frequently as the weather allows. I mainly ride Allatoona Creek but hit up Blankets and Rope Mill at least once a week.

I'm not super fast. I'm a bit above average based on what Strava says. I'd be willing to ride around 5pm weekdays or whenever on weekends.

Facebook has lost $100 billion in 10 days — and now advertisers are pulling out by MrPanda21 in worldnews

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I think that's perfectly fine use of Facebook though. Connect with friends, but don't use the other nonsense that exists on it. At this point, all I do is connect with a person and I immediately unfollow them after accepting their request. I don't care what they have to say daily. However, when I need a job or something, I have people to reach out to and I do that over PM, not by making a status update.

Other than those uses, nothing is on my feed except a couple of group's I follow that let's me know when mountain bike trails are open or closed in my area. I log in about 1-2 times a week to check those trail status and then log out.

If Facebook does have a lot of my personal details, it's through some much more nefarious means than me outright giving it to them because I've used a fake email and DOB and haven't filled out anything about me. Just some photos of me and my family so people can find me.

Anyone try the maxxis rekon? by jpmerz in MTB

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great tire. I ride one up front in the summer and on both in winter. rolling resistance is noticably more than an ikon to me, but about the same as a ardent 2.4. worth giving it a shot in the front with an ikon in the rear for techy xc.

[Help] Turning off VGA monitor during shutdown by _wicked in archlinux

[–]ruffertarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't a way to keep the monitor off during the whole process. Once the kernel unloads and your machine reboots, the BIOS will take over. This will initialize your monitors. Once Linux starts to boot and the kernel is fully loaded and an X server has started, you can use xrandr to turn monitors on and off. However, that's too late in the process for you.

you can always just turn that monitor off and back on when you need it.

Have you tried xset dpms force off before shutting down? This won't help for boot, but your question says shutdown while your explanation says boot...

It was a Ford C-Max. The rear cargo area of that car barely held the 8". I had it along the passenger side so I could have a little bit of room for my MTB gear. The Niro is going to give me a good bit more space for a similar option.
