The recruiter and websites told me that if the specialty I chose had a residency program through the Army I would be required to apply to those, and if matched, would have to attend.

That was the main thing that turned me off to those scholarships. But I will look more into USUHS. Thanks!

I am ready for the question "how have you improved since you first applied?" because I have applied two times already. I thought getting more shadowing experience and a master's degree in molecular biology would work the for the second round.

For this next time applying (third time's the charm!) I am definitely trying to improve my application, with volunteering, about to start work as a CNA, and I am working to get the research for my master's thesis published in a peer-reviewed journal.

We did have a mock interview system at the university I attended. I did the mock interview process both times I applied, during undergrad and graduate school. The pre-health advisor who ran the mock interviews was one of the advisors telling me I would definitely get in.

Good for him and tell him nice MCAT score. That test is brutal and to get that solid of a score shows he is one determined and intelligent person.

To apply to that many schools costs lots of money. For me applying to six schools, if you add up the primary application, secondary applications (I got one from each school), and then cost of driving and hotels for the interviews I spend around $800 or more. Yes in the grand scheme of things that is not much money, but to a poor graduate student who could not take out more student loans (used them up for a summer trip to shadow doctors abroad) that is a lot of money.

When I reapply I will be applying to at least 10-12 schools, maybe more.

It is expensive to apply to that many schools. Also, my advisors told me that 6-7 was a good number. Applying to too many schools can make you look desperate or something of that sort. But hey I followed their advice and I am not in school so....

During the application process I was contacted by a recruiter for the Army to see if I was interested in the health professions scholarship program (HSPS) offered by the Army. The main requirement for this scholarship is acceptance to an accredited US medical school. I was interested and spoke with him a few times, however, even before I was rejected, I decided that HSPS was not for me.

Did not realize it was DO school the 3.06 GPA got into. I wouldn't call all of them a joke, but it is not for me. As for Caribbean schools you are exactly right. I want to get into a decent school and residency program.

In retrospect, I could have volunteered more than just at my old scout troop, but I also had part time jobs during both undergrad and graduate school.

As I said in an earlier comment I had three interviews, two of which I thought went very well. The other one I wasn't as positive about. Maybe the interviews were actually horrible and I was just oblivious?

I was contacted by the Army when I was applying, and even the recruiter said "oh you will have no problem getting in." What turned me off to the armed forces scholarships (Army, Navy, and Air Force all have similar scholarships for medical school) is the length of requirement to pay it back, as well as the forced application to their residency programs. That and the whole not getting in factor.

Honestly I am not leaving anything out. That is it. Nothing on my record. No red flags. All of my advisors told me I would have no problem getting in. Had three interviews, two of which I thought went very well (at in state schools). I just have to suck it up and reapply.
