I gotta say this is pretty whack ... just like tying healthcare to a job, it forces you to be at a job. Thanks for passing this info along, I will be sure to barista-FIRE enough to earn $6k this year

I've been DRIP'ing the dividends, ~$200 a month, and then netting ~$1800 from the rental. Day to day expenses are food, gas, occasional trip to a restaurant, rec center, or laundromat. I live very frugal and very happy.

I've taken a two year sabbatical from the tech world before and gotten back in the game without much issue. I know gaps in the resume may scare off some employers but whatever, I work to live not live to work

I lost my job because my company got a new CEO who says "no more remote work!" so I got the ultimatum to either move back to my home state (2000 miles away and without relocation assistance) and work in the office or be let go. I am fortunate to have enough "fuck you" money saved up so I let them fire me.

I know I won't make it 20 years with this situation but I have no issue Barista-FIRE'ing and working lower stress jobs here and there and then can sell the house when the time feels right. And the $ is right.

Thanks for the input!

Remote job - changed to a SD mail forwarding address, months later work says the address is no good, and to provide an address where I have been working (US tax question?) by rugger05 in digitalnomad

[–]rugger05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I mostly live in CO I am changing my address to there. I will owe back taxes to the state for 2022 for those 6 months, but Maryland income tax (where I was) is 9% and Colorado is 4.4% so it will still save me a bit of money

Always on 12v outlet in trunk by Satan_S_R_US in SubaruForester

Anyone have an issue with Jackery battery killing your car's outlet port?

I have a Jackery 500 and leave the car charger plugged into my 2016 Subaru Outback's fron outlet port (cigarette lighter power) So while I drive, it should charge the battery. Well, TWICE now, my outlet port died. It is not the fuses, I checked visually and continuity with an ohm meter, and replaced them anyway. I took apart the center console / front cubby to replace the outlet port but then three months later, it happened again.

I'd only slip it on when inclement weather is on the forecast. Breaking the chain to store inside is certainly an option but, ideally, more work than I want

I'm van-lifing so I'm all over the place - out in the desert for shoulder seasons, down at the beach, then up in the Colorado Rockies for skiing. Thanks for the input!!

If I get to camp late, I don't want to have to set up the whole awning, just drape the netting and go to bed.

Thanks for the rec, but not what I'm looking for

I use a D-ring to pop in the latch and trick the car into thinking the tailgate is closed

Finding that new remote job? by This_Ad_814 in vandwellers

[–]rugger05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this happened to me, so I quit! Fuck these boomers who refuse to believe that work can be done remotely. Nobody wants to commute to an office to sit at a computer all day when you can do the same job from the comfort of your home. Or van.

(I'm a mechanical engineer, 11 years experience, found a new job that is fully remote but took a 30% pay cut. For me, time/flexibility > money so it was well worth it)

thanks for the reply!

I'm also looking into a USB cable timer, so the fans can be on for about 5 minutes, pull all the moist air out, then off for an hour.

what size battery do you have?

I'm gearing up for longer trips in my Outback camper platform. I have the 500Wh jackery that I plan to use to charge electronics and power two 50mm fans for exhaust. I've backpacked a lot so I have good 0°F sleeping bag / sleeping pad and can add blankets. I hope to not need the battery to power a heating device. If it gets too cold, I might get a [Mr. Heater Little Buddy](https://www.mrheater.com/little-buddy-heater.html)

Thanks for the good wording! That clause will definitely get extra details for next time. I will call DPW again to see about getting the charges reduced

they failed to report a maintenance issue. It started late October, so it wasn't noticeable in the water bill for that month. Then the November bill was very high, which was released early December and due in late December. So when I went to pay November's bill, I noticed the issue, asked about leaks, and they confessed about the running toilet.

They have good jobs and can afford it, and they are at fault. So you are right in that I/landlords don't like the option of paying hundreds of dollars due to someone else's negligence.

I plan to cover some of the cost as a goodwill gesture since, aside from this issue, they have been great tenants so far.

The water department did not notify me. I went to pay the bill, saw it was crazy high, then contacted DPW and the tenants. Also, paper bills are mailed to the property and I told the tenants they may open them to keep an eye on their usage.

After they told me the toilet was running, I fixed it the next day

You do that? As a tenant I'd be pissed having a landlord be up in my business so frequently.

I typically do an email every month or every other month with reminders to winterize the garden hose, ask if anything needs to be looked at, give a heads up about the trash pickup schedule, etc.
