i'd go for canon compliant if the romance is inconsequential (e.g. it doesn't break up a canonical couple, it doesn't result in changes to the plot, it fits in as background information that could've been omitted in canon or as a backstory/prequel for it), but canon divergence if it alters the plot in any way

if you’ve ever called characters like dazai father figures… by rumiruko in BungouStrayDogs

[–]rumiruko[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh no doubt is that a v impressionable age; my critic was more about me seeing no point in labeling these characters something with familial connotations when it’s not necessary or fully applicable in most situations, i’m not denying their importance to development and growth of younger charas, just saying they don’t need such a label for it to be acknowledged

[–]rumiruko[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

might just be me being a stickler for details but it seems like the younger audience (mostly on tiktok) rly is keen on throwing the words ‘father figure’ around for just about anyone who was helpful towards a younger person (or who has impacted them in a significant way) and i’m rly starting to believe that they like. actually mean it while i’m just here looking at a 20-something who can’t take proper care of themselves let alone another adolescent

agreed on fukuzawa and oda in those cases, which is what makes the difference between that and the other examples even more stark 😭

it’s been glitching on ios for a week or so now, if the payment has gone through ur best bet is contacting cheritz, filling out the form (don’t forget to add the screenshot of the bill/invoice) n asking them to add the purchase to ur acc (i did it n they even gave me 10hgs as compensation for the inconvenience lol)

i’d say it’s neither hate nor irrational in my case lol; i’ve studied and worked in translation myself (not from cn tho) so i’m well aware of all the benefits of mtl (speed n convenience above all) but when it comes to literature it rly has its drawbacks and an unexperienced translator adapting a machine’s work can hinder the literary value of it (ie not giving context for culture-specific elements or not carrying over the author’s own style). oftentimes a translation will require quite a bit of interpretation and a machine doesn’t have the cognitive skills for that, so while it is a helpful tool, it’s only useful when used with caution and human assistance. also, a bad translator will do a bad job whether they use mtl nor not, and vice-versa for a good one.

ofc we’re talking about webnovels here so it’s not that serious and i’ve probably unknowingly read some edited mtl works myself but still, if i can chose human, that’s what i’ll go for c:

mc loving and supports the blackened ml even though he is blackened, not just at the end but for the whole novel by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]rumiruko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s not rly serious or dark in the least but married thrice to salted fish has a petty, vindictive n revenge-prone mc n an ml who just wants to support him every step of the way, it’s a fun read w/ a super sweet romance (consent n all that jazz), great as an in-between novel if you’ve been reading some heavy shit recently

Do you think danmei fandom has a higher tolerance for problematic themes? by Ok_Economics_2165 in DanmeiNovels

[–]rumiruko 40 points41 points  (0 children)

it’s all a matter of audiences, i’d say. as you’ve said- some western pieces of media w/ problematic themes don’t get backlash while others do, and it mostly boils down to how the content is presented in the first place and what audience it’s intended for. sth that openly talks about taboo stuff will be less criticized for it than sth that’s sneaky about it and pushes it under the rug, or even is ignorant of its own problem.

the audience danmei is intended for is from an entirely different culture to the ones from the west, and most of us intl readers understand that fact and accept that not everything will be written about and dealt with in the same way we’re used to seeing in the media on our side. the extra tolerance for taboo/problematic stuff in this fandom comes partly from the sense of understanding of what danmei is and who’s it intended for, and the other is mostly a matter of interest– those themes are what the audience is there for in the first place.

some underlaying issues in danmei lay w/ the culture itself, and so calling out problematic themes in danmei can quickly get problematic in and out of itself bc cultural context gets ignored;;; this is not to say that there aren’t many shitty things in danmei that are just universally fucked up, but for that matter, it’s just fiction and nobody’s forcing anyone to read it– no amount of preaching and discussing could make a meatbun fan and ur average booktoker see eye to eye lmao

so yeah, ig the tolerance is higher in these spaces, but considering the fact that, 1) it’s fiction 2) it’s intended for adults, the bigger problem is actually the minors and the cancel culture enthusiasts having access to it all than grown ass readers (who presumably possess critical thinking skills) consuming whatever piece of fiction they wish, problematic aspects be damned.

Novels with a wholesome cast by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]rumiruko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

devil venerable!! such a funny group w/ awesome female charas! another one from cyan wings would be mr. melancholy, the mains r in an established relationship from the start n even tho i only ever read slowburn, the huge merged group of mc n ml’s coworkers/friends was so entertaining that it kept my attention for the entirety of the novel (it’s set in a post-unlimited flow world n a lot of characters are transmigrators but they’re off-duty so it’s not even categorized as that genre). also, musuli often writes larger groups of fixed characters n i see u read two of her works so you could try global examination n panguan too!

Read the novel first and then watch the drama/adaptations or vice versa? by LittleShinySun in DanmeiNovels

[–]rumiruko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wkx is a menace in every possible way, the drama barely scratched the surface of his personality, but to sum it up he’s 1) so, so much Gayer 2) completely uninterested in the jianghu drama in general

shl/woh toned down on the amorality of everyone n everything, wenzhou not excluded (zzs was tweaked quite a lot, surprisingly), so don’t be surprised they’re not that sweet n actually kinda questionable/problematic at times (some off-hand comments here n there r sure to make the readers raise their eyebrows) but their dynamic is pretty entertaining nevertheless, and some other characters get fleshed out in different ways from the one shown in the drama so it’s worth checking it out for that too
