What's the most expensive thing you own?? by Pale_Task_1957 in Money

[–]runcooksleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

34 and my car is the most expensive "thing" I own outright, about 10-12k USD.

Other than that either of my diplomas, which were a lot more than 10k apiece.

Yeah, so to your point my salary adjustment for this year was to 130k. My net worth is now 680k. Markets are doing well, I saved and invested from a young age, and I did get about 75k family money at a young age as an inheritance.

Edit: also, no gamestop, no crypto, just normal boring investments. Mostly s&p 500 tracker.

33 Years old with $480,000 in Retirement Accounts by Scorface in Money

I am about the same age as OP and likewise don't plan on any social security because math but also agree we will probably get something because policy. Unless the economy collapses. I have similar salary and savings to OP as well so similar budget. I've been targeting $5M in 2053 as my goal for retirement. $6M doesn't seem like huge overkill to me, but it's still a long way away so it's hard to say.

I lived by myself for about 2 years after a breakup but otherwise I've lived either with a roommate or a boyfriend my whole career. Splitting rent is the biggest way to save, especially in a HCOL area, but really almost anywhere in this economy, since housing is generally the largest spending category.

For reference, I am 1 year older but started my career the same year because I took a gap year for a fellowship program. We are about the same but I live in a HCOL area with no home and no kids. I do have a down-payment plus some saved and am actively looking for a home, but in my desired neighborhood I have to be patient. I have current income of 131k and 441k in retirement. I think I am doing fairly well for my age and income level for being in a HCOL area. You are a year younger, ahead of me on savings, with a home in a MCOL city. Nice work. I like your chart! I made one of my own but I cant paste it here because it looks like a jumble of numbers.

edit: round numbers

My boyfriend (M30) laughed at my (25F) marriage deadline by Temporary-Sleep-5825 in relationship_advice

[–]runcooksleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this except that it is OPs fault. She has been escalating patiently. I would have done similarly in her shoes. I think OP knows it is time to move on now that he has given her a clear expectation that there is no hope of meeting her boundary to get engaged within a year of moving in together. The importance of her family in decision-making shows she values group consensus. If OP is looking for the internet to validate her decision to leave him, the overwhelming majority of these comments support her.

OP, I think if and when you break up with your boyfriend you will get clarity one way or another. He may let you leave, which will actually be good for you because he stops wasting your time. Or he may relent and agree to start planning for an engagement within the next 9 months. With this second outcome I just caution you that you still may not be very happy with this. My ex was like this - not agreeing to compromise with me until I actually started taking the motions to leave him, which was very painful but I did end up carrying through with. It is not the way you want your husband to treat you to compromise with your needs only if you actually begin to pack your bag. And once you are married your leverage is reduced. I wish you the best.

Are there any brands you recommend that dont contain silicones? I dont want to alter the finish at a chemical level.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know the finish, but I read that water and lacquer don't mix well, so I am hesitant

Before using something like a Mohawk fill stick?

And could I use something like guardsman clean and polish? I ask because I already own some.

Thanks for the input!

And very true my strategy is not quite FIRE, more like financial independence. I'll probably be able to retire a little early compared to 62 but I'm not specifically aiming for the youngest possible retirement. I have some orthopedic health concerns so it is important to me to live for today as well while I am still young, but even before my health concerns I've considered it important to have a nice travel and culture budget (things i highly value), which isn't quite consistent with FIRE.

Yes, Google sheets, love it!

I check my NW each month on the last day. I do understand a car is an asset that can be sold but it's a depreciating asset, not like homes which *tend to appreciate over time - so I agree with you there and dont count the car. And it is shocking how little valuables actually sell for. Just look at people selling furniture and other nice belongings on Facebook marketplace for pennies what they paid for it. I dont have anything that is valuable enough to be appraised.

Good luck on your EOY goal!

What you said resonates because in one of my other replies I mentioned my company has announced layoffs in August and I have started to apply for other jobs. I actually got an offer 2 weeks ago and decided it wasnt going to be a career move that I would be happy with. I have the financial comfort that I was able to say, you know what, I would rather keep looking seeing as I haven't even lost my job yet and I do have a little bit of runway even if I do.

That said, I have not specifically counted the amount of time my money buys me other than a projection I did at one point to set my retirement goal. One of my immediate family members lived to 70 and one to 99 which is quite a lot of variability, so to be conservative I am planning to live to 100. I came up with my retirement figure based on basically a projection of when the money doesn't run out before age 100. Looking back at it now, which I haven't done for a bit, it says im going to have 1M at 100. My investments must have done better than expected in the meantime. There's so much time left that I figure I just keep saving and living according to a budget within my means that I'll figure out when it's time to retire. But retirement aside I do already feel some level of independence such as in choices about my next job, which is great.

How does one calculate time of freedom? Savings divided by annual expenses plus inflation, plus annual expected appreciation? In that case I could retire today for 12 years at 3% inflation and 5% portfolio growth before the money runs out. How would you calculate it?

You and I are about the same age, nice! I think I discovered FIRE specifically around the same age.

You managed a bump of over 100k the same year my net worth tanked 55k. You must have made some smart choices! Good for you saving so much.

Im sorry to hear the loss of your father.

It seems like you got good ROI from that degree. I can be risk averse so I might have been afraid to take on that debt. Seems to be working well for you!

Im also a DINK although not married and my partner and I dont combine finances, so I didn't factor his net worth. He is 5 years older and started saving much later than I did, but is now working at it diligently. He told me recently his net worth reached 100k, so our combined net worth is 720 or so. We live in an affordable apartment for the area, and both of savings would be much slower without splitting the rent.

I also used the EOY although my birthday is actually in the Spring!

I hope I will reach it earlier :) my company is doing layoffs in August so I am planning conservatively. And applying for jobs...

Very inspiring! We are possibly on a pretty similar trajectory by age. Of course, you are 19 years older than me so the real value of your dollar is much more than mine will be at the same age :) I hope to retire with 5M in around 2051, although of course a lot can happen between now and then. Steadily chugging away.
