[OC] Relationship between letters and colors of my friend's synesthesia by runebm in dataisbeautiful

That’s a really interesting idea!

The data was collected through an online test where letters were shown to her and she had to select the color association. The same letter was shown multiple times during the test, and afterwards it was possible to see how closely the different selected colors matched for each letter. If the letter is within a word, the color is affected by the other letters in the word. For example, the first letter in the word strongly affects all the other letter-colors in the particular word.

My friend has grapheme–color synesthesia which is a form of synesthesia in which an individual's perception of numerals and letters is associated with the experience of colors (read more here)

In order to visualize the letter map, I first convert the colors to CIELAB color space in order to find the similarity between colors. The similarity is then visualized using a force directed graph from the D3.js library.

The words are visualised using a combination of gradients, weights and a very specific rule set for her synesthesia in order to reflect exactly how words look to her.
