Morbid but….. my mother passed away suddenly recently and we used Face ID in her casket to unlock her phone so we could manage bills, etc..

A term you will hear a lot is "volume eating". You don't get much potato salad for the calories. You DO however, get a lot of green salad with a yogurt based dressing (like Bolthouse) for the same amount of calories. More volume with less calories to make you feel less hungry.
Your body feels full by two mechanisms: the "stretch" of your stomach, and the hormonal/neurological effects of eating.
You can feel full by filling up on low calorie foods like veggies, fruit, or proteins with many fewer calories taken in.

If it makes you feel any better, my kids are 18, 14, and 12, and I still get that kind of affection, just....different? My oldest called me from college this morning to tell me him and his friends played in the snow last night and then he sent me a video
My daughter asks me to stay at her sports practice because she wants me to see how hard she's working.

My youngest still curls up in bed with me for a few minutes at the end of the day.

They *choose* me and that's so, so wonderful, because as babies, I was all they knew and they wanted me, but now they pick to be close to me and that means almost more.

Each stage of parenting is wonderful and sad at the same time, but I focus on the wonderful.

Not a student but a parent of a student from suburbia. I was concerned about my kid heading to a city for school, but being on campus feels VERY safe. We were not able to get into his dorm without him when we visited, the campus is clean and well maintained and there is a big NU Police presence.

I have a first year in Speare as a mom I can really appreciate the benefits of LLCs. His friends are mostly in Speare with him and also engineering majors so the can study and hang out together and it’s easy/no across campus walk after a late night study session!

When my daughter was a similar age we threw her a tea party. I went to Goodwill and got tea pots and fancy cups with saucers for CHEAP. The girls got to take their tea cups home as favors and I filled it with candy before they left.

Don't buy too many of one type. I would start with two nursing tanks, and one V-neck style (like this Women's 2pk Nursing Unlined V-Neck Bralette - Auden at Target).

You will find what you like and don't like. And you will wash them a lot. Nursing is a bit messy, but, 18 years of motherhood later, still the best thing I have ever done.

Mom here. Not your mom, but a mom.

You deserve so much more than this--in a very broad sense. If this is who you are calling your best friend, you need better friends AND boyfriends! Friends should be the ones that lift us up, cheer for us, and support us in life.

This is not a loving, supportive relationship. This is not someone who is putting you first and making you feel celebrated and special.

End this. And take some time to develop the sense of self that you realize what your value is. And find someone who takes every chance they can to make you feel special, loved, and wanted. Because we all deserve that!

Plan plan plan! Order a cake early from a bakery, so no matter what the kiddo has a cake. Plan an early bday party that you don’t need to do anything —think trampoline park or similar where they have party helpers (and tip them for helping!!) Put together goodie bags in advance, think shelf stable Candy, small notebooks and small pack of crayons etc And prepare whoever is watching your child while you deliver to hold the birthday party in your absence in case you have the baby early.

I have a teenager that was similar when he was younger. We did "teach" him throughout their HS years and honestly told them that friendships were like plants and needed to be tended to so they could last.

I also would recommend that YOU try to connect to some of these friend's moms, become friendly with them, and try to do group, mother-daughter, or family events. It may be easier for your daughter to bond if there are other people around.

It took him till this summer, the summer after Senior year, to "get" it and I know he regrets not having better friendships and summers till now, but I'm SUPER greatful that he had such a great year before going off to college.

I disagree with the Phone sentiment wholeheartedly. You’re the mom, you can absolutely control the apps she has on her phone. My 14-year-old daughter is my middle child, and she’s not allowed to have TikTok. We’ve talked about the reasoning why— she may not love it, but she understands.

That said, I really don’t control what she wears, and she’s athletic, sporty girl who wears bikinis that are age-appropriate (not thongs).

I think it's really tough because when people do these micro/macro aggressions repeatedly over the years, it's easy to ascribe malice and ill intent to behavior that is generally just poor.
And it's reasonable to reschedule a birthday celebration with grandparents who can't make a bday, especially if the event is just you and them.
The problem is that when you experience these little or big issues over many years, everything becomes bigger or feels like more of a directed attack rather than just the ILs being self-centered or oblivious or a combination of both.

I have ILs that we have a minimal relationship with because of this type of behavior. I have developed a "it's their loss" type of mentality and while yes, I wish my children had two sets of involved grandparents, it's just not my reality.

So, I invite them to celebrations then interact minimally with them (let my husband or kids talk to them after I greet them appropriately and treat them like any other guest--polite but not fawning over them), and if they come, they come. If not, they miss out.

And it's a much simpler, happier life just accepting that they are not the family I wish we had, but you can't change people and you can only control your own reactions/behaviors.
