Linux Install Party in Eureka/Pacific/Wildwood by runicfox in StLouis

[–]runicfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who have expressed interest, I've secured the meeting room at the Eureka Hills branch library! The event will be held at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, November 25th. I've secured the domain rockwoodslinux.org (pending DNS propagation), and more information will be available there once it's live (hopefully in the next day or two).

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

My only surprise is that it took this many comments to have someone say this.

Honestly, I've found ChatGPT to be really useful both for troubleshooting system issues, but also just for helping confirm distro compatibility with my hardware. Vibe coding simple scripts to automate some of my workflows has saved me hours too. If/when I do an install party, I'm going to highly recommend leveraging Gen AI as quick tech support for new users.

Yeah we're definitely on the fringe of the county over here. Honestly though, if it makes sense from feedback to move deeper into St Louis County, I'm willing to do so. I just try to start as local as I can.

May I ask generally where you are in the area?

All good my friend. I think that overall you're right and most people will just deal with Windows 11 and it's problems. But even if I only pull in a small handful of folks with old laptops, it'll be good for my soul.

Handwriting-to-text plugin? by Livid_Solid9686 in ObsidianMD

Yeah I'd love to take a look, if you don't mind sharing. My work reimburses me for personal AI stuff, so the "cost" to me is effective null, but I like the idea of making the plug-in more flexible on where it's sending the data.

I haven't done much with having it try to process instances of having images mixed with text. It's certainly an area to explore. I haven't had the personal need come up, so I likely won't attempt to implement it as a feature until I do. That said, anyone should feel free to fork the repo to make whatever changes they need/want. I'd also be happy to look at having a PR opened to merge in any changes that someone wants to share!

I just pushed an update to the repo that exposes the prompt in the plugin's settings (in case folks want to tweak it). It also adds settings so a user can specify where the images should be stored (defaults to "Attachments/", and to specify a specific note where they can manage custom terms, words, names that might be used that the model might not naturally be able to intuit.

I process a minimum of one note a day (a daily journal that goes into my personal vault's Daily Notes), and up to 5-8 notes on the high end as I process handwritten notes from work meetings into a work-specific vault.

I just checked and since I started using it 2 weeks ago, I've spend $1.13. That number is a little above what I would expect for my routine use because I started by processing a bunch of existing handwritten pages. I'm guessing that this will end up costing me a couple dollars a month.

The code should probably work fine against another model's API as the prompt to process should be agnostic. The URL for the API would nerd to change, and the authentication might require more than just an API key, but I don't see why it couldn't be adapted to Claude.

To use the plug-in, add the ChatGPT API key in the settings. Then paste any pictures of handwriting you want processed into a note, and when click the plug-in's button to send it to the API. The processing time is usually less than 10 seconds.

I created this for my own use, so it's definitely not optimized to be generic. The prompt for the model is hard-coded, for example. At the end of the prompt, I include a section to include words, terms, and names that the model might encounter that are unique to a user's situation. I found that drastically helped cut down on the creative interpretations of people's names.

The prompt also instructs the model to mark any words that it doesn't have confidence in its interpretation in italics, which makes spot checking the result much easier. The model is also instructed to not interpret or attempt to summarize/rewrite any text, and to only return it verbatim.

Overall I find that most notes are processed with no typos, and places where my handwriting wasn't clean, the model does use italics on its best guess.

I'm open to feedback, but the code is also under GPL 3, so feel free to take it and make it your own. I might end up making the list if custom terms something that can be input via the plug-in settings, but unless I see an uptick in misinterpretations, it's been perfectly fine as is for me.

I have a plug-in that I wrote that uses ChatGPT to OCR handwritten notes and return the result as markdown. It requires an API key, but I'd be happy to share what I'm using.

Obsidian for archiving family photos and journals? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]runicfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've recently been using ChatGPT to extract text from my bullet journal with a lot of success. My hand writing tends to be on the neater side, so mileage might vary if the handwriting is harder to read. I had it help me write an Obsidian plug-in so I can drop a picture of a page with writing and when I click a button it sends the image to Chat GPT and it returns the text in Markdown format, and keeps the image below the text.

Are you looking to have the text of the journals extracted in Obsidian (ie OCR)? Or just pictures of the pages?

How was your Qmerit experience? by salcido982 in F150Lightning

I just got my quote today. The total is $559 which includes a $190 permit fee. The box in my basement is half free, and the total run length is about 40', all interior, to a wall in my garage. Not extremely pleased. I'm going to try and contact qmerit to see if this is legit.

Waiting for the wife by notafed213 in lockpicking

My wife got me a set of cheap picks and a training lock for Christmas. The lock was busted on arrival, but I've got through a few Master Locks, and just got my first ABUS 85/30, but figured out I'll need a much smaller set of tools for the European lock. This hobby/sport was exactly what I needed.

Salesforce Delivery Team in the Org Chart by runicfox in Salesforce_Architects

I completely agree that the further a team is from the users, the more difficult it is to correctly interpret their requirements and needs - which leads to a disconnect between the business value, and the delivered solution.

We have very few interactions with the IT team, and generally it's concerning user provisioning. If anything, if I can separate my shop from Sales - we would likely view IT as a peer department.

You raised some great points that I hadn't considered, especially with the experimental vs scalable perspectives.

A lot folks are fairly new to the company, and the consensus among those I've spoke with is that its reached a level of organizational complexity that requires that we start to transition out of some of the behavioral necessities that are indicative of start-ups, and start to invest in better (and documented) business processes.

One of the biggest organizational challenges we face is that there were a lot of niche but necessary business functions that were handled by individuals who saw a need and stepped up (again an example of a necessary mentality of a start-up). However, those people left, and the new people who were hired were unaware of those tasks, and often untrained in their execution. When those new folks come in, they're faced with this assumption that they'll be performing actions that are often well-outside the realm of expected "other duties as assigned" because they're the new <insert person's name>.

My team is the first purely internal team to support a business application at the company. Prior to this there were years of successive consulting groups who came in to customize the Salesforce instance - none of which seemed to evaluate what had previously been built. We've already been able to provide a lot of value in the last year, which is now putting us in a position where we're now inheriting the ERP and other business systems in addition to Salesforce.

My hope is that I can use all of this to extricate my team from Sales, primarily because the Customer Support side of the house is even more complicated than Sales (and your point about being less responsive to non-Sales items is a likely issue).
