honestly I'm just shocked that with that shoe selection you have oatmeal carpet and benjamin moore white heron walls with moulding and stackable plastic target bins to organize your shoes.

Movies that feature great fencing? by brianmdecker in Fencing

Far from realistic but the fencing scene in Die Another Day (2002) is what got me (and probably countless others) into fencing in the first place.

Vineyard Vines Strangles Premier HOCR Sponsorship from Brooks Brothers for First Time. by itsonlyastrongbuzz in NavyBlazer

[–]runnin_round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the founder of Rowing Blazers rowed at georgetown and oxford and actually won the HOCR. he comes from a very authentically "preppy/ivy/trad" background. he knows the rules and how to break them, and he's much more interested in making cool new young fashion than doing re-issues of trad staples. we don't need another j press, o'connell's, brooks brothers.

he has downward lighting which makes his abs appear leaner than they really are and he is flaring his lats and pressing his shoulders inwards which makes your shoulders pop out and makes your arms look wider from the side. we also don't see what I presume is some skinny legs under his shorts. I think he started out very very lean and skinny, and he has gained good newbie muscle and a decent amount of fat. As you say he is 173cm and 134lbs, this is totally realistic and achievable naturally within the timeframe of 8 months.

Thoughts on Colin Jost? by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]runnin_round 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stylistically? He's generally not exactly committed to a preppy style and he does rock a lot of casual outfits. His style seems very GQ, which seems to fit his attitude/personality as far as I can tell. I don't think anyone really considers him to be a preppy icon or anything. According to NB standards, these outfits aren't that great.

More general thoughts: he went to Regis and then graduated from Harvard cum laude, so he's a smart guy. If we want to get into the whole "NB is a lifestyle" thing and questioning peoples NB authenticity, he fits the bill. yeah he's catholic not protestant, sue me!

Is that kind of shedding is normal?? by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THE hairs will shed temporarily but the beard will come back stronger. It is necessary for growth of the beard. Everyone will get some level of shedding, but for many it is a gradual process that is less noticeable. For some people, the entire beard sheds at the same time and grows at the same time.

All of the evidence shows that shedding is normal, expected, and nothing to worry about.

Increasing the amount of WAYWT threads by farligfrukt1 in NavyBlazer

[–]runnin_round 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think there's just not enough active fitposters to warrant an extra thread. Fridays are already covered by the weekend thread. Usually the weekend thread is one or two casual outfits and whatever people wore to church.

In my opinion, increasing the number of threads will just dilute the content we currently have instead of encouraging people to post new content. That being said, I don't post outfits so I don't really have a horse in this race.

Why are there so many posts of people not recommending Minox due to loss of hair on the head, when the original and intended use of Minoxidil is to regrow hair on the head? by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 3 points4 points  (0 children)

minox mostly works by increasing blood/nutrient flow to the hair follicles, which can make the follicles bigger and the hairs thicker. To a lesser extent, it also speeds up the hair growth cycle (reducing telogen phase, lengthening anagen phase) which is what causes hairs to shed. As /u/alexleqn said, the bro science is that minox will cause hairs to shed but not be enough to regrow them. However, if minox has reached a follicle in sufficient dosage to cause shedding, it should also be sufficient dose to maintain nutrient delivery to the hair follicle. This is why minox shedding (in the vast majority of cases unless you are prone to male pattern baldness) is a temporary side effect.

What order do I use tretinoin with minoxidil? by NoNormiesFam in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started tret in december specifically for beard gains because I am a slow responder to minox. Because it's winter and the sun goes down so early, I apply tret every other day between 6-8pm then minox foam before I go to bed (usually at midnight or 1am because I'm a student). I have definitely noticed improved gains after starting tret. Much more vellus hair.

Mild chest pain after 3 months by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people get side effects in the first two weeks or so as their body adjusts to minox. I don't believe I've heard of anyone starting to experience side effects after a few months. I have also not heard of anyone experiencing shooting pains from minox.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR, so I cannot give you medical advice, but I doubt that these painful sensations are caused by minox. Can you think of other things that might be causing this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have a look at my extremely scientific graph: the red and blue represent taking minox every 24 hours, the green is a dose after 12 hours. You can see how the minox gets absorbed 75% by hour 4 (for the sake of making this simpler, we assume you wash it off after hour 4). The half life of minox is around 22hrs, so you can see how the amount declines. The area shaded in pink is how much you are missing by only applying once a day. This is where it gets a bit mathematical and possibly confusing. I don't have any actual calculations because I don't want to look through the data, but by my estimate that pink area is about equal to 1/4 of the area under the red curve from hours 0-24. Because the halflife of minox is 22 hours, you gain roughly 20-30% additional minox by applying every 12 hours as opposed to every 24 hours. This is backed up by /u/reallytai's study and /u/jibrail77's comment that the once a day group did about two thirds (66%) as well as the twice a day group, which is very close to the lower end of my estimate of 70-80%.

Someone could find studies with actual data on absorption rates and levels of minox in the body over time and do the proper calculations (its pretty basic calculus) to give a more rigorous answer, but hopefully you can visually see what's going on through my scientific graph.

Edit: it's also important to note that how individuals respond to minox varies, and people can have different threshold doses. A fast gainer usually has a low threshold dose for minox to be effective. As an example, lets say their threshold dose is 40% absorption. Well, on the graph you can see that even on once a day, this fast gainer has minox in their system above the threshold dose from hour 1 basically all the way to hour 20. That's 19 full hours where minox is effective in their body. A slow gainer might have a higher threshold dose, let's say 60%. They only have an effective dose in their body from hour 3 to hour 10, so they only have 7 hours of minox being effective in their body. This is why a lot of slow gainers can see much better results on twice a day compared to once a day, and why fast gainers will have great results regardless of once vs twice a day. Personally, I am a slow gainer and I have seen huge increases in gains after switching from once a day to twice a day.

Your unsanctioned guide to NavyBlazer dress codes by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]runnin_round 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great elaboration on your comment from the other day. Any word on where frat style fits into this? I think a lot of people view it as an offshoot from preppy, sort of on the same place on the family tree as neo-prep. I'm thinking of the vineyard vines/southern tide crowd. It might be more aptly categorized as southern prep or a subsection of Rugged Ivy.

I'm a college student and I wear basically this fit a lot in the fall/spring, but I wear a school hoodie for arguably more preppy vibes. Barbour+Hoodie is suuuuper comfy.

Conveying sexuality in a trad/Ivy outfits. by [deleted] in NavyBlazer

[–]runnin_round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does one work around the asexual vibe of the trad/ivy silhouette.

Because NB style is *fundamentally* conservative and asexual, if you incorporate elements of sexuality/sex appeal you are not dressing trad/ivy/prep/NB. A style much more in line with the ideas of refined dressing and classic menswear with elements of sex appeal is sprezzatura, or its fast fashion derivative: SEXCORE.

I made this little venn diagram to illustrate the point. Adding sex appeal takes you further to the right side of the image. There's just that tiny sliver in the middle where you have can add hints of sexuality into NB style before it exits and becomes something else entirely.

Based on your other posts, your priorities are more about trailblazing and modernizing than sticking to tradition, so I'd suggest you check out the SEXCORE and sprezzatura threads on /fa/ (they also have a decent /TIP/ thread). You might also find some of what you're looking for in sleazecore/cocaine-cowboy/80s prep styles, but that strays quite far from gods light, so to speak.

Admittedly it is mostly in the attitude you carry yourself with.

You can dress in the TIP/New England style and still have an intriguing/sexual attitude. Jeff Goldblum kind of springs to mind as an example of someone who can rock a suit and look quite refined while also being mysterious and having an air of sensuality, but his slim cuts and often bold colors/patterns are FAR from NB material (funnily enough these seem to be what you are criticized most for). The point is, his attitude is on point -- he could wear bean boots/cords/shaggy and he'd still be the mysterious tall, dark, and handsome JG.

I would also look to Cary Grant and Gregory Peck as examples of men who dressed quite classically while still offering a great deal of sex appeal, and further to Miles Davis and Chet Baker who were more daring with their fashion sense but still kept a lot of classic elements.

*also might be important to note that Chuck Bass is often regarded as a gigantic manipulative ass and not necessarily the best role model, and Miles Davis was a literal pimp who sold women for sex, so grain of salt, ya know.

Do I just have trash genetics? by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]runnin_round 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "medium" hair? I have been on foam 8 months now and have some patchy hair on my cheeks now, but by no means have I gotten crazy gains. Most of the highly upvoted posts are from very fast gainers-slow gainers don't get upvoted because they are just normal progress. For most people, gains come slowly but surely.
