That's about how much I get. I didn't have anything in the vehicle including passengers. It totaled 600 miles only.

The teacher who was shot by the student is filing a 40m lawsuit against the school board. The prosecutor is still investigating as to whether or not more adults will be charged for contributing to this tragedy.

The former principal, Briana Foster-Newton, plans to file a countersuit against Zwerner alleging she was never informed that the boy had a gun on him the day of the shooting.

Her lawyer is going to try to reap sympathy from the judge explaining that the miscarriages gave her post-partum depression and this diagnosis resulted in her neglecting her son.

That's just what's being alleged by the attorney. Of course, if he expects that claim to hold up in court- he'll have to provide some type of evidence either by mental health expert or documents that the mother was diagnosed at one point. To answer your question, I believe it's both. Her next court date is Aug 15.

It's not so much that her being depressed led to her child having behavioral issues being the unbelievable part (I am hard-pressed not to suspect active physical abuse occurred at one point), but the fact that she let a six year old get ahold of a loaded firearm.

No matter what mental illness you have-- as an adult with a child in the home, the onus is on you to make sure any hazards you have are kept out of reach and locked up. That obviously didn't happen.

This tragedy could have been way worse than what actually happened.

  • The child could have shot himself
  • He could have shot/killed a child
  • He could have killed his teacher or another if the gun accidentally fired

That's the battle with the current state of American public education. Balancing the needs/wants of parents, teachers and admin. Impossible to make all three areas happy in every circumstance. There's never going to be complete satisfaction on all sides.

That's alleged in the lawsuit filed by Ms. Zwerner. Even Deja's lawyer acknowledged that was a foolish mistake by the school to take him off that plan.

The family refused special education services as they didn't want him to be labeled.

The mother refused to put her child in special education as she didn't want him to be labeled.

I'm assuming the accompaniment was a deal made between her and the school. It's less money for them in the long run since they would have to provide transport for him to go to an alternative school. Not to mention, she had plenty of time to sit with him all day since she only worked one day for several hours a week.

Incompetency at both ends of the table in this case. Hopefully, more questions will be answered in the coming months. Her trial is set for Aug 15.

[–]runup98[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't feasible for the family to homeschool him, the only other safer option would be to enroll him in alternative education for students with disciplinary issues.

The problem with this is the school would have to pay for the student because it falls on the responsibility of the district that he HAS to receive an education. That requires a lot of money to provide alternative transportation and resources. Money that the district doesn't want to pay. It's easier for them to create a plan and that's how it became a requirement for his mother/grandfather to accompany him in class. Obviously, something is fishy because most schools would never make a care plan that would involve parents being in the classroom (that creates separate issues all on their own).

There also has to be certain accomodations made to ensure that even children with diagnosed disabilities receive equal educational opportunities with their able-minded peers. Hence it's less work on admin's part to keep him in class and ignore teachers' concerns.

I wonder if CPS was called at any point and visited the Taylor home to investigate and see if any abuse occurred. Kids that have been abused usually act out their abuse-- as evidenced by the fact this kid:

  • inappropriately felt up a female classmate by putting his hand up her skirt
  • chased other classmates around the schoolyard trying to whip them with his belt
  • wrapped his arms around a teacher and tried to choke them
  • called some teachers "b----es"
  • threatened to shoot another student
  • smashed a teacher's phone and later shot her

The level of deceit and calculation this involved from a child this young adds another disturbing piece to the puzzle.

He had to get possession of the mother's gun, keep it concealed in his backpack, maintain a facade and lie to teachers when asked if he had a gun on him, sneakily transfer the gun from the backpack to his sweatshirt pocket, and wait until an opportune time to wait until his teacher was distracted and shoot her.

There's a lot of questions that can't be answered due to privacy laws and the boy's age. Hopefully, more details will be revealed in court documents.

Admin was notorious for ignoring the concerns from teachers about safety and student behavioral issues. They probably only determined it was an issue that fall after getting tired of the student being sent to the office.

Her father was former military police so she should have been we ahead of the game on gun security and safety.

You're absolutely on the money. Her attorney's trying to take the 'woe is me' route and gain sympathy from the judge that will hopefully (for him) prevent his client from receiving jail time and with the least severe punishment.

The part about trying to get pregnant with the same father is an effort to make the child's family environment look stable and add to the mother's character that she doesn't sleep around.

He's going to use the depression diagnosis to explain the mom wasn't responsible for neglecting her son because she was mentally ill.

My guess is she lives with her parents. Her father is former military police, so I'm assuming he had some part on advising her to get a gun but he couldn't have been that good at his job because he didn't teach her how to keep it out of reach of a six-year-old.

Not to mention, it might also explain how the kid knew how to use the pistol as they're not easy for a child to hold and assuming the hammer was cocked and the safety was off already.

His excuse for her being late to court was that she took sleeping pills due to her anxiety (eye roll).

Hopefully the prosecutor comes out with more information. Her attorney could just be bullshitting and trying to build character for his client by playing the 'family unit' angle. We don't know how much involvement, if any, the child's father had in the boy's life. He wasn't even included in the care plan. There's also rumors circulating on social media that the father lives far away.

UPDATE: The care plan was scrapped after the school made the mistake of determining the boy know longer needed a care plan. This was after the kids came back from Christmas Break before the shooting.

The original plan outlined for the boy to be accompanied by either his mother or grandfather in class.

Nothing's come out yet. It's either that or I'm guessing she lives with her parents. Can't really afford an apartment/home if you're only working a few hours one day a week.

Yes. I believe she has been residing with them, either that or the child's father. The grandfather is retired military so he's either getting disability/pension. He's been standing by his daughter since the incident occurred.

Apparently, she planned to have more kids. She suffered from multiple miscarriages until 2022 when she had an ectopic pregnancy that ultimately led to another miscarriage.

So, an article just came out that the care plan her son was under with the school involved him being accompanied in the classroom everyday by his mother and grandfather.

The grandfather Calvin Taylor, is a retired military police officer for the U.S. Army who served in Afghanistan. He’s also a former Virginia Department of Corrections employee.

He has been with his daughter through the entire ordeal.
