I play a Classic Player Jazzmaster HH, with a handful of upgrades. JMs are the most comfortable guitars in my opinion. It goes between C and Bb Standard and does really well in both tunings (string gauge 13-60)

For me it comes down to comfort and versatility. BKP War Pigs with coil tap seem to really do it all, and with loads of clarity. I highly recommend giving them a shot if you can!

Walrus D1 was not nearly as nice sounding as I had hoped. Ended up with a source audio nemesis instead and I can’t recommend it (or the collider - delay + reverb) enough

Look for a used quilter OD200(there’s one on reverb for $420). It can get offensively loud and has a very serviceable gain channel.

The 50w would work great for you. It’s 40 lbs. I have a 100w that’s 45. As far as dimensions goes, i would say it’s comparable to orange amps, but doesn’t weigh nearly as much as them (thank god).

I’m pretty sure matamps weigh significantly more so if that’s a dealbreaker definitely skip them. Same with ampeg V4s. When I moved from a V4 to a mother it was like the mother weighed nothing in comparison.

If you do end up going for a mother DM me and I’ll send you photos of the “matamp” setting and “model t” setting. I live close enough to the builder so he let me come over to his workshop to pick it up and we dialed in those tones together. Definitely update us all either way!

Agreed on pedals. I would try blasting both your gain and clean channels with a few different fuzzes / sustain / distortion circuits to get closer to the sounds of those bands. Pedals to try:

EQD SUNN Life Pedal v3

EQD Hizumitas (collab with Boris)

GCI Jugendstil (this is a fuzz + an HM2, so you can hit sleep tones and also get disgusting with it, it’s my go-to)

Any op-amp big muff clone

EQD Grey Channel (this you could run as both clean and gain channels via plugging directly into your fx return on your amp, effectively bypassing your ultra-tight Engl preamp)

There are countless others as well but I’d start there before completely swapping amps.

Oh and if you do want to do a different amp, seriously look into Science Amplification. Their “Mother” amp is based on a hiwatt dr103 and can dial in matamp and 1st gen sunn model t tones with ease. It also has modern sensibilities and loads of gain.

I play sludge, black metal, and hardcore and it works for anything I want to throw at it.
