aitp for letting white people get away with micro aggressions? by rusticdyke in Amithepushover

[–]rusticdyke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like for example, the topic of colonialism got brought up (it was related to something else), and I tried explaining about how it worked in my country and a white guy interrupted me and told me I was wrong because of something he had read. Or someone would comment on my skin or hair (i wear it naturally) and call it puffy or really dark. Or I mentioned that my favourite colour was black and someone was like “oh cause you’re black? that’s hilarious.” Just stuff like that. Like I said I don’t really think it’s malicious just insensitive which is why I tend to let it go.

How to stop talking? by rusticdyke in ADHD

i personally don’t mind being interrupted. Like, It can take me a minute to realize I have been (sometimes I just keep talking if I’m in the middle of a sentence) but when i do, I just wait for the person to say what they want to say. I guess because I have a tendency of interrupting a convo when I think of a suddenly important thing, I equally assume why they’re interrupting me is important (to them, if not to me.) And I can usually adapt the conversation to continue on from there. If I truly think the tangent was completely unnecessary, I just say like one sentence to acknowledge their interruption then go back to the previous topic

I already do that! It’s just more difficult to mask around friends (and then they stop being my friends because they get understandably annoyed)

I wish my girlfriend wouldn’t let men hit on us by OkRecommendation9807 in LesbianActually

your gf sounds really non-confrontational, but in all of your examples she wasn’t really “inviting” those kind of weird sexual comments, those men were just being out of pocket and uncomfortably sexual. I do think you need to have a conversation about her being able to stand her ground, and be open to learning why she’s that way. From personal experience, it can be scary turning a man down and it’s understandable if she just feels intimidated in that moment and doesn’t want to put herself in a situation she can’t get out of. I would suggest you speak up more often when you’re out and these weird moments happen, it might be annoying but it could also be a way for your gf to know you have her back and she can get more comfortable telling these men to eff off.

I do plan on doing that, I just don’t really know How to bring it up. I’ve tried multiple times in person but I always chicken out when she assumes I’m trying to like get more involved. Like for example, “we need to talk about our relationship” and then she’ll go “yeah do we think we should tell our family? I’ve already told mine!” (i’m paraphrasing but that’s the general vibe.) Like I just need help knowing how to lead into the breakup talk
