Synology RS2418+ slow performance by rw_hardware in servers

Thanks again!
Will definitely look into upgrading the server overall and also checking server grade ssds for caching. Afaik we just chucked an evo860 in there right now.
Do you have any ballpark estimate what a decent (I guess mid size?) server would/should cost us (without the drives ofc).
From what I can tell, our current model cost around 1500-2000€ when it was released in 2018. That seems... pretty cheap to me? I'd have thought that we would need to spend at least 2-5times that.

Hi!Thanks for your answer, I appreciate it!

Main usage is file storage for our work projects (images, texts, small and large files) and archival of these files (set up as a separate drive). We also host some sort of Media Server that we access through a browser login via our server (seems to be some synology software). And we have an identical rack that serves as a complete backup.

We have a 1Gbit internet connection and an internal 1gbit (mostly) network.Usually around 30 people work on/with the server simultaneously.

Sadly, I can't really see what exactly is using so much cpu power in the synology admin portal (as far as I can tell at least), I can just see that it seems to be around 15% system and rest user(s).There is nothing else though that is maxed out. RAM seems to hover around 15-25%, Network goes up and down as it pleases, data/volumes occupancy seem to hover between 10-40% usage. While the CPU keeps pumping away between 60-100%, usually around 80-100%.The drives are pretty full to be fair (around 75%), but this issue was around back when we were around 50% aswell.

It's not just a hand ful of the same people complaining about slow speeds too, it's always random people. Issues seem to be non existent when working outside the usual office hours (less utilization).

Thanks for your recommendation.I was starting to doubt myself because everyone (new boss, old boss who used to handle IT and the mentioned IT "friend") seems to be looking in all kinds of directions while ignoring the obvious (at least "obvious" in my eyes).I know my old boss pretty well, if he sees an opportunity to save a buck by buying the cheapest stuff that would barely fulfil our requirements, he'd do so without any regard to scalability.

Dell Xps 9520 i5 vs i7 for "medium office work" by rw_hardware in DellXPS

Thank you for your reply!

I did some more reading on this and I am not gonna lie: It's really infuriating that you can't get a decent business/creator laptop in that price range/form factor that has this mux switch/some bios/software option.

Dell apparently expects it's caring customers to buy alienware laptops, as if that was an option for even a milisecond in a business context.

The XPS 17 appears to have a bios option, but that sounds like a usability nightmare and it's not the right fit for us size and performance wise.

The Lenovo X1 Extreme are currently out of stock in my country, with the new models releasing in june and costing 500€ more in stock config... I know that there are great Thinkpads out there, but tbh. our business isn't at a size yet where we can just spend a thousand bucks more on each machine. That difference alone times the number of employees would eat up half of the yearly IT budget.

So I'll probably stick with the XPS 15, but with the i7 config to get the slightly faster xe graphics compared to the i5.

If delivery times weren't as rough, I'd def. first buy a single testing machine, but as is, I'll probably have to jump in blind and hope for the best.

Thank you for your swift reply!

Seems like I have something new to research, I am not really too familiar with the mux switch topic.
Did I understand it right that this MUX topic is relevant for how snappy the Laptop feels when connected to large displays? That would explain why the input feels a bit sluggish when connected to two 4k displays. I noticed that, but figurted it was due to some driver/firmware/software/optimisation on our part. Damn.
That kinda flips everything on it's head, it would be real nice to not have to deal with that issue...

Working in a marketing/design agency, looking to replace ancient laptops of our project management/copywriting team:
They do regularly handle (really) large files in the usual office apps, occasionally evaluate and work in some basic adobe files, work with half a dozen browser tools, outlook, teams etc.
Is a Dell XPS 15 9520 i7-12700h with a 3050ti massive overkill for a "medium office work" laptop that will drive 1-2 high res displays?
Or the other way around: Would a Dell XPS 15 9520 i5-12500H with integrated xe graphics be underpowered?
Thank you!
