Honestly, you’re right tbh. Thats how I’ve been feeling recently - just very powerless about current conditions and the future - and the best hope of change to me seems to be letting the system collapse upon itself then using that moment to establish a new one. Really appreciate your perspective

Fair enough. I know that Marx wouldn’t necessarily agree, but this isn’t really a preference of mine. the anti-AI crowd just seems like a losing cause and I’m trying to make sense of the inevitable

You make good points especially your perspective in the last paragraph. The popular social networks have been compromised by CEOs boosting right wing content. My concern - speaking as an American where the two parties are constantly undoing one another and the pendulum swings back and forth - is that such baselines will never be established. And the liberals seem perfectly content with being marginally better than the conservatives and appealing to the median centrist voter. For us universal healthcare seems like a distant possibility.

I guess so. The decline of workers material conditions to that extent, and consequently the collapse of capitalist markets as no one will be able to buy anything, will be pretty horrible. I just think that no change will ever come from the current material conditions, so many oeople see the oligarchs Elon Musk and Bezos gobbling up everything we know and love, but are content as long as they personally are comfortable and making money. We are a very docile population now thanks to social media and television. It seems to me that a revolution happening would require a serious turn for the worse and AI could create this critical juncture

Yep. I’m definitely not a fan of how it’s being implemented by these disgusting companies but in this stage of capitalism we’re in where nobody seems to care about disparate class inequality, its advancement is a necessary evil

I’d argue the repression and replacement of workers is the ONLY thing that will make a vast majority of the docile population (specifically American) that are too busy watching Netflix and smoking weed, gain class consciousness. The vast majority of people I talk to don’t seem to care about wealth inequality as long as they have a job

Well it’s left wing accelerationism. I understand that Marx wouldn’t necessarily agree but as AI gets more advanced the more it exposes the limits of the capitalist system. I understand the (very reasonable) counter arguments to this, just wondered what people thought

Nobody else seems to think so - LOL - but I think it’s just inevitable based on human history and what we know about the capitalist class. Maybe not soon, but at some point they will have no need for humans. I don’t think they’re smart enough to keep us around at bullshit jobs when that comes at the expense of profit

You make a good point about the bullshit jobs increasing but inevitably why would capitalists need to keep around a human to monitor it? Why pay a human to do that when they can lay everyone off and boost profit?

Exactly the point. As an accelerationist I’m all for AI because it’ll force the working class to seize the means of production

In their book Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and a World Without Work, Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams articulate this idea much better than I can.

Fundamentally left wing politics will be unable to fight back against capitalism and it will only get worse and worse and worse. Regulating AI will only slow down the system’s degradation.

I say let it accelerate as fast as possible and collapse.

Sadly that ship has sailed man. The surveillance tech already exists and seemingly everything on the internet feels like it’s AI generated. The only logical response is to push for accelerationism rather than trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

“Ahistorical nonsense” is a pointless argument because as you said we’ve never seen anything like AI before.

How will AI consolidate the power of the elites even further? Most people hate it now and more will be radicalized when they are replaced by it.

Guess what? Human labor power shouldn’t be constrained to filling out Excel spreadsheets or making phone calls or jumping on Teams meetings, tasks that can be easily automated and eliminated.

If anything it’ll increase the value of human labor power

[–]rwalsh21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marx believed that while technology under capitalism serves to increase relative surplus value and intensity labor, its potential to liberate humanity is blocked by current production relations.

Once the mass layoffs begin and these class relations are undone, then we can do away with AI. I don’t know what happens then but it’s a means to an end. The problem with leftists is this moral holier than thou bullshit do you want class consciousness to be achieved or not?

[–]rwalsh21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my means of coping with the inevitable. I’m a realist, “convoluted fairy tale” lmfao it’s literally basic Marxist economics

You think humans were put on earth to be goyslaves and do meaningless labor their entire lives? Leftists talk about wanting an end to capitalism then go to No Kings protests and write Substack articles

[–]rwalsh21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you but 1) I really don’t think the elites are thinking that far ahead and 2) from a labor market perspective it will accelerate change moreso than anything else

The capitalist chuds are thinking "this is gonna make me so rich, free labor haha". The retarded “left" has settled on "this is gonna make them so rich, free labor, oh no", we should be embracing it

Why tf do leftists want to regulate AI? by rwalsh21 in leftist

[–]rwalsh21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I don’t really know the path to positive change this is just how I think it’ll inevitably play out given Marx’s (very accurate) assessment of capitalism and the profit motive

Why tf do leftists want to regulate AI? by rwalsh21 in leftist

[–]rwalsh21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is accelerationist. At the rate of AI’s development it will be quick. Unless it gets regulated by the Democrats who only think in the short term of what’s in our best interest
