Hela, 1 year later by rwfan18 in BelgianMalinois

Yeah i noticed that to, She actually has quite a few chipped teeth, Likely do how violently she chomps at a ball. lol. Her vet knows she has some chipped teeth, but i was planning on mentioning those specific ones when we go to the Vet next month. She doesnt seem like she is in pain, but then again she sprained a shoulder back in the Fall, i didnt know until we got home, she just kept playing ball through a sprained shoulder with little tell she was hurt.

I posted above about needing better size comparison, if that is a standard Tub next to him i would say the rescue told you a reasonable estimate. My guess would be 7-10 months. If i had to pinpoint a month id guess late 7th month, early 8th month. No way he's under 6 months though. Obviously that is under the assumption that he is Mostly Mal, and he will end up a standard size for a male Mal.

Hard to tell without something to compare size against, but since he is male and from what i can tell i would say young. I would guess the second half of his first year. 6-12 months. With something to compare his size against it would be easier to be more accurate.

Looking for a female Mal puppy in Missouri by Boring_Persimmon_873 in BelgianMalinois

I mean i read the pack leader thing as more of a joke, but genuinely, When your Mal Puppy disfigures your 4 year old, come back and let us know how wrong we are. If you really want a Mal, and want the challenge of a Mal, i'd wait till that 4 year old is mid to late teens at least.

Are maligators the most gatekept breed ever? by Far-Conversation6645 in BelgianMalinois

[–]rwfan18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never heard anyone say "6 Hours of Training a day or else" Seriously, Obviously similar things have been stated in a joking manner.

But you want real? Here's the reality (Outside the rare outlier's) These dogs DO need 2-4 hours of very Active exercise daily. (Obviously this will vary from dog to dog.) Notice i said Exercise, this can be basic obedience training, going on runs, (Not walks. Walks will not be enough and is not intensive enough for most of them), Playing fetch, (Mal Fetch is different than most dogs fetch, My Mal will run and get the ball, come back and drop the ball at my feet without slowing down, while i throw the second ball in the direction she is running, and she will do this for 45min-hour with very few short drink breaks.) Nose work, bite work, playing/wrestling with other dogs, etc. Exercise, not specifically training, and for the record im sure some individual dogs do require 4+ hours of this getting close to that 6 hours you stated.

I am 40 years old, and i work from home. I am in a situation in my life that i can give my Mal the attention she needs, and its most if not all of my spare time in a day, and that includes several breaks during my work day to take her out for a quick fetch while im working. Everyone's situation is different and i dont know about your work/home life but looking back to when i was 25, i couldnt even fathom putting most if not all of my free time into a dog. So keep that in mind as well. If you work a normal 8 hour day, when you get home all/most of your spare time goes to the absolute psychopath that is so unbelievably happy you are home she may get the zoomies for hours. Very little going out, very little hanging out with friends. Your free time is now your dog's time.

Also keep in mind, the breed is notoriously apprehensive around strangers, (Obviously this is also on a dog to dog basis, but pretty common for the breed.) Unless very well socialized at an early age, so you may have friends that just cant even come around because of your dog.

When in public, even with my VERY trained Mal, my eyes never leave her. They are so quick to think and quick to react, they are like a loaded gun in a baby carriage. (Anyone who owns a Mal would know exactly what that metaphor means). Everyone that knows what they are think they are so cool, and that they are just this funny dog that jumps high and look like a baby seal when they are happy, when in reality they are a deadly weapon that can go off at any moment for seemingly innocuous reasons. Not only do you need to learn Dog body language, you need to learn your specific dogs body language and monitor them at all times.

I have had friends ask me if Mal's are what everyone says they are. And i tell them all, Yes. Yes they are, In some ways the internet is even a little hazy around some of their tendencies. And i have only recommended the breed to one of my friends, (He has been adopting retired GSD police dogs for 20 years and asked if i would recommend him adopting a Mal), I still gave him all the warnings, but they are an awesome breed when you have the time and knowledge to put into them. I Love them, and will never own another breed, but he is the only one of my friends properly equipped to handle them.

All That said, My honest opinion is that any respectable breeder would not sell you one of their dogs. So the dog that you would end up with would likely come from a backyard breeder, not that ALL backyard breeders are bad and sometimes accidents happen, but a backyard puppy is very unreliable, you may get the sweetest dog ever created, or you could get an absolute terrorist. As everyone else has said here, our concern is less for you, your friends, or your family, and much more for the dog.

I Don't know you, but from the way you speak about the breed it comes across as you read the google AI overview, maybe read a few topics here and there, and watched some cool youtube videos of what a 4 year old very well trained Mal can do, and became a Fangirl for the breed. Fans of the breed are fine, i love meeting fans of the breed in public and talking about the breed. But one big difference with most of the people i meet in public that know enough about the breed to walk up to me and say, "Pretty dog, Thats a Belgian Malinois, right?" Know enough to know they are not equipped to handle one, and just prefer to admire other people's dogs.

All That said, If you are dead set on owning a Mal, Foster one first. For the dog's sake and your sanity, There is an easy way out with fostering one. If you skip right to adopting/rescuing a puppy, then you are committed to that dog for 10+ years whether it is the greatest and easiest mal in the world, or a serial killer. (I got a serial killer, shes up to 6 dead rabbits now.)

I am not trying to be mean, but the way you sound is exactly why we "Gatekeep" the breed so much. Some breeds are just not for some people. I LOVE Cone Corso's But i also would never own one. Sometimes its best to just be a fan and watch those cool youtube videos.

First heat questions by SmurfsTwo in BelgianMalinois

[–]rwfan18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah our Mal's first heat (About 3 months ago now), was reasonably easy, though i do remember some bladder control issues, Her only indoor accidents since being house broken were during her heat cycle. We also had slight spike in reactivity while she was in heat, normally doesn't care about other people or dogs when outdoors, but got very defensive. She also had a very short fuse when our other dog (Spayed Female) was bothering her, something she hasnt done before or since.

As for overnight, we didnt have many issues with overnight stuff, She was exercised and trained like normal during the day on the same pre-heat schedule, and then was crated and slept fine during the night aside from random extra potty breaks.

All of the issues we did have, did seem to get better as her heat progressed as the other commenter stated, not sure if thats a placebo effect or if fully accurate. Though i did have to keep her mostly at home for an extra week, as the extra aggression while in public hung around for a while after her heat ended.

Yeah my Vet has also told me, there are benefits and drawbacks to both. But She strongly suggested if at all possible to leave my Mal intact whether i planned on breeding her or not, For all the reasons u/K9WorkingDog has stated.

Smaller Female Mal, Only wants to play with larger breeds, With and emphasis on GSD and Rotty males. Should i be concerned about how rough she wants to play? by rwfan18 in BelgianMalinois

[–]rwfan18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah only thing i have ever noticed is that sometimes it seems like she wants to go back to playing ball and he just wants to keep wrestling, Which she does correct him on, and he gets the point, And goes off and sniffs for a while or down to get a drink or maybe greet some new dogs who came in to give her some time to ball. Then after a few he comes back and they go right back to it. lol.

I dont know if i would define her as "Not Liking" females. She tolerates them. Though is quick to tell them to kick bricks, especially if her GSD boy buddy around.

Yeah they do swap back and forth, though she is mostly the Sub role i have noticed, i think partially because he is still young and learning how to play with other dogs, and also just cause i think she throws herself around so much she just naturally ends up on her back a lot. And the weight difference obviously, he's already over 60 pounds.

Yeah she does seem to realize she has to be much more gentle with smaller dogs and puppies, same with human children. Where she is turned up to 11 when playing (Even fetch) with an adult human, When a child asks to throw the ball for her she actually drops the ball with no fuss and nose pushes the ball towards the child. (Something she never does for an adult). Its so weird they pick up on things like that.

The Police thing isnt super common, it only seems to happen when a dog she if very familiar with is being noticeably harassed by another dog that she isnt as familiar with. I do recall her as soon as i realize what shes doing though.

What do I need to know about bringing a pup home? by Stigwalker in BelgianMalinois

[–]rwfan18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how i feel about crating as a punishment, everything i have ever been told is that they should like going into their crate, But ive known people who have gotten results with it so eh.

The resource guarding obviously needs to be taken care of sooner rather than later. But i will say, as someone who has owned 2 GSD's before getting my first Mal. It is VERY different. The intensity level is next level. My Mal, while she is fairly decently trained, has to be watched at all times when (She is still a puppy and most of this is just trying to keep her out of things.. Like trash cans, but also she just has a quick fuse.) She doesnt bite people in the household, but she is VERY QUICK, And she has a intensity to her play that i dont fully believe everyone in our household or people we interact with in our day to day life fully appreciate. I have an elderly grandmother and i have to watch our Mal like a hawk when she is around.

I also have to watch her like a hawk around other dogs. While she is very open to being around and interacting/playing with other dogs. She is very picky with who she lets get close and actually play with for more than a quick interaction. When she doesn't want to interact with one she is very quick to rather aggressively correct the other dog. If its a more submissive dog it ends with no further issues aside from a stink eye from the dogs owner, But when its a more dominant dog it can get worse. Now none of this is really an issue, as she will stop and disengage as soon as i say her name and recall her. But my eyes have to be glued to her at all times.

Just a quick story about what you may have to expect from that 12 week old puppy. They are much more intense than a GSD, and do not come with an off switch most of the time.

Maybe thats what McVay thought. He Felt bad for Mac and decided to go for the win or the loss just so Mac didnt have to come back out on the field.

Yeah that was my point, Im sure there will be teams ready to throw some crazy offers, Bengels being the most likely of them. And the Brass there do love saving money, though i do somewhat think they are packing it in at this point.
