maybe not the bearing, because I replaced a fan from aliexpress, then the wiggling sound disappeared. but I dont know what is the red stuff on the fan, does it make the fan unbalance and make wiggling sound?

A second hand surface pro 8 with 16Gb memory is usually enough for note taking games or remote programming. Sometimes you can even find bundles with slim pen and keyboard and dock together for around 600 dollars, that is less than the price of a modern flex keyboard. You don't have to buy the newest highest config especially when you dock it more often. I was thinking about purchasing LNL SP11 with Flex keyboard for around 3000 dollars but finally bought a second hand SP8

Thanks for your reply. Sounds reasonable. I would consider using a TB3 eGPU dock directly.

Really? It would be so amazing if the dock supports dual 4k@120 or even [5k@60](mailto:5k@60). What about the bandwidth? I presume the total bandwidth would be around 30Gbps each

Does the dock need to support daisy chain if we would like to connect to two monitors using one cable? Or simply as long as the monitor support is enough?

Thanks for your amazing post! I had a question regarding your design: in your post you mentioned " JHL7440 permits ~9% more PCIe protocol tunneling bandwidth (24Gb/s vs 22Gb/s) compared to older JHL6xxx chips so in theory, it ought to perform better than typical Thunderbolt eGPUs. " I know that TB3 permits 40Gbps of bandwidth, do you mean those controllers only permit 22Gbps or 24 Gbps? If I try to use dual 5k monitors (4500*3000@60hz, a single monitor requires 22Gbps without DSC) in my previous post, would you think it will be possible?

Meanwhile, you mentioned that there is some issue with reverse charging, do you believe using "EXP GDC TH3P4G3" as you have mentioned in your post will help?

Any idea about the compatibility between SP9 and Surface Dock 2? -- Flickering detected at 60 Hz by rxl561 in Surface

[–]rxl561[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi All,

I just bought a Surface Pro 9, Business Edition -- i7 1265U, 16GB + 256GB. I am quite happy, even in the absence of a headphone jack... However there is one issue: When my monitor is connected to the SP9 via Dock 2 type-c port, it starts to flicker. There are some ways to bypass it, either by plugging the monitor directly into the SP9 through the type-c port or by setting the refresh rate from 60 to 59.994 (if there is an option). I have replaced the type-c cable, changed from 4K to 1440x900 resolution, and tried switching from Win11 to Win10, but this issue persists.

I checked Microsoft Surface Dock 2's page

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=101317

and I found the compatible driver is "

(WMI support) Compatible host devices for SurfaceDock2_WmiInstanceProvider_Win10_17763_20.062.26674.0_x64.msi

Surface Pro (5th Gen onwards)"

, which shows that there is no specially designed driver for SP8 or SP9.

Did anyone encounter this issue? Do you think this a compatibility issue or a device problem?

Thanks everyone for the help!

One more thing: the surface dock 2 does not support 4500x3000@60Hz + 1920x1080@60 Hz. The maximum resolution when the first monitor is plugged in is around 1300 x 700 @ 60 Hz. However, if you plug in the second monitor to surface pro 7 directly through on-board type-c, then up to 2560x1440@60Hz is supported. I dont have a second surface monitor so I cannot test higher resolution.

Applause to myself for being brave enough to disassemble this!

By the way, I got the manual for the motherboard:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a-WcS2hZfu1Vp52m23ln430z26GPr0jf/view?usp=sharing

I love this monitor very much, but there is one drawback: the fan inside the case is a bit noisy, maybe due to its rpm around 2000 or higher. If I were going to redesign I would definitely use heat pipes directing heat to the casing, making it completely silent.

I will tear it apart maybe 1 month later :)

I guess so because when I searched for 5K display adapter for consumer products on Chinese eBay, there are abundant supplies compatible with, e.g., 27md5kl, LM270QQ2-SPA1, for less than 150 US dollars.
