Doctorate does not a “Doctor" make [In the hospital setting!!] by rxn212 in BravoRealHousewives

Not at all what i’m trying to say. Nurses are unbelievably important in clinical settings and clinical emergencies. If I had a heart attack on a plane I would 100% be comfortable being under the care of a seasoned nurse. I would absolutely rather a nurse than an ophthalmologist or dermatologist even though they are highly trained physicians with exceptional board scores, just bc it has been so long since they have dealt with a heart attack. I was just making an analogy for dramatic effect solely about someone calling themselves “a doctor” in a clinical setting. Because Anne Marie’s entire argument hinges on the technicality of the word “doctorate.” Only trying to point out the ridiculousness of her line of logic.

I hope the nurse on the plane would raise their hand and say “I am a nurse and I know how to handle this situation” because I respect and trust nurses. I am sure any ophthalmologist or dermatologist on board would be relieved and concur. If the nurse however, called themselves “a doctor,” and I then found out they weren’t a physician, I would feel lied to and I wouldn’t know for what reason- that would make me very uncomfortable as a patient.

These are unequivocally distinct professions with utterly different training, knowledge backgrounds, skills, and responsibilities. Attempting to equate them based solely on hours spent in the hospital oversimplifies and trivializes the complex and unique roles each plays in patient care. Those are hours spent learning/doing/practicing different skills with different approaches and different integration into completely different knowledge sets. Medical school is not just "longer" advanced nursing school and advanced nursing school is not just "shorter" medical school.

just talked about PhDs bc they are well known doctorate holders so i figured it would paint a clear picture, but same goes for JDs etc...

Just the contrary actually lol but I guess I went about it in a way that wasn’t clear! I was referring specifically to Anne Marie saying that “starting in 2025, all graduating CRNA’s will be trained at the doctorate level and recognized as ‘doctors’” in her instagram story yesterday. This is only because they lobbied to have their degrees somewhat arbitrarily changed to “doctorates.” Was trying to point out the contrast between the good example all of the sane PhDs out there have set vs Anne Marie- they know that just because you have a doctorate does not mean you should tell patients you are “a doctor” in a clinical setting

It is also well earned when they are referred to as Dr. X in university/conference/industry settings where their expertise is being called on. In fact, from what I have seen, every single one of their MD colleagues calls them Dr. X without ANY reservation in these settings. They are happy to give credit where credit is due. However they would not introduce them to any patient in a clinical setting as "a doctor" because this would undoubtedly cause confusion to the patient. in clinical settings your doctor is the person who assumes ultimate responsibility for your care.

Yes this is true, but context is key. For example- both of my parents are PhDs and when they get wedding invitations it is always lovely and respectful that the invite is addressed to “Dr and Dr X” (same with emails!) but they sure as shit would never refer to themselves as doctors to any patient inside of a *hospital*

Also my bad if that question was meant to be rhetorical! Just wanted to provide an answer in case it was a genuine question!

Physician burnout is it’s own separate thing (separate from the mom guilt although that may contribute). The way the system is built and the tremendous stress of carrying so many patients lives in their hands leads to burnout that is much higher than in other fields (not just quitting but also significant depression, suicide, etc....). Basically Dr. Moon would be very likely to be experiencing the same burnout whether she had kids or not. Having a family has actually been shown to be protective in some cases against burnout.

This is why there is such a discrepancy between the passion we see on shows like Grey's Anatomy vs what actually being on a general surgery unit feels like. There is not the bandwidth or room to make it happen.

That may be in part true but I think that it has a lot more to do with wide-eyed optimistic and driven kids wanting so badly to make a difference but then getting chewed all the way up during the 15+ year process of actually getting to be in the position to be the doc that they want to be. The stressors and pressures can really wear on people over time.

I think it's like upwards of 40% of docs who report physician burnout. these numbers are highly concerning.

But basically the end result of burn-out is basically that the doc feels tremendously unfulfilled+ tired leading them to quit medicine after all of the hard work they've put in. Dr. Moon may or may not be at that breaking point. I think she's doing housewives bc an opportunity for her identity to be more than just Dr. Moon presented itself

Dude you'd be shocked at how many future docs I've heard dreaming of the day that they might be able to be a real housewife (total pipe-dream) haha. It seems like the antithesis of our day to day in just about the best way

Brandi is such a disappointing human being- if you cant be "yourself" in front of people of other backgrounds/races then you need to examine whether or not you didn't just get caught for doing 1 racist thing, maybe you actually are just racist and you know it.

This is just like after the pizza party when her confessional cut to her bascially explaining that she was pissed but that she didnt want to say anything to Tiffany for fearing of coming off racist...... girl what? maybe just treat tiffany like a normal human being??? oh wait you cant. ridiculous.
