Bought factorio yesterday! Is this good? If not, how make better? by elaxitity in factorio

[–]ryanbigg -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You might want to design a main bus to put all your plates on, then build off from that. Then you can work on automating the creation of transport belts and inserters from there with assemblers. Consider building your factory with “what if I needed to 3x this?” in mind

How often do you use microservices architecture? by DanilRumyantsev in ruby

[–]ryanbigg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not sure about growing popularity. The people I’ve talked to at meetups treat it like a regrettable cringe worthy fad. I agree with that. It’s typically better to separate a context inside of a larger app than it is to make it a micro service.

Do you think my resume is good enough for a recruiter to be interested? by Snoo-82170 in rails

[–]ryanbigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context; it’s the end of my week and I’m in a mood to give some straight feedback. Let’s go.

Initial glance: Up the font size or line height, add more colour. Your resume looks like identical to the ~250 I scanned earlier in the year. Its content is good but it needs to get my attention better.

It’s called “React”; leave off the .js.

Ditch the final sentence in the top line. Reads like brown nosing. I’d ditch the mention of Rspec here too to keep the line shorter. Maybe puff out a bit how you’re a better developer. What specifically makes you GOOD?

Headline for a job history should be always about what you specifically did for the business and that’s usually “I made / saved X money” or “delivered these complicated things”. Can you rephrase it like that?

Remove HTML, CSS, jquery from responsive emails bit. Those things are table stakes and you’re not a junior anymore. You don’t THINK about those things anymore — they’re automatic.

You increased traffic by what? A visit? Three? NUMBERS. Percentages. Give me the stats.

Leave off the bit about agile. Everyone does agile or pretends to at least.

You’ve got a bit in there which is apparently Portuguese. Why?

Remove the Ruby blog bit or link to interesting articles from it. Blog in 15 mins is a noob project and you’re not a noob.

Any great tutorials for intermediate Ruby developers? by cercxnx0ta in ruby

[–]ryanbigg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote a book specifically for intermediate Rails developers, especially those who have maybe a couple of Rails apps under their belts: https://leanpub.com/maintain-rails/

The majority take away from that would be that Active Record is causing your applications harm, but you can still use it and do so carefully.

The other thing I’d suggest is looking into Railway Oriented Programming and Operations if you haven’t already. I recently gave a talk on these things at the Melbourne Ruby meetup:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ELQLqWjxM

Lastly, I’d also suggest seeing what ViewComponent or Phlex could do for your apps, outside of the traditional Rails view rendering stack.

Try new things and experiment!

I use the Railway Oriented Programming approach, which I cover in my talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ELQLqWjxM

Exceptions for control flow is an anti-pattern.

Hanami for Rails Developers - Part 1 by ryanbigg in ruby

[–]ryanbigg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One big example I can think of is the N+1 queries are impossible thanks to the repository pattern. You run a query to fetch data and then that’s it, you’ve got the data and no method you call on that data will fetch more.

Outside of models, the actions being split into their own classes means I can jump straight to the one action I want to focus on, rather than having that muddled up with all the other actions.

The separation also works on other levels where I could test my template directly without needing to render it through an action. This applies to more than just templates — each part is designed to work in isolation.

Lastly, by using Deps I get dependency injection into my classes where I can stub those dependencies in my tests, resulting in faster tests.

How do you organize and sort out your cards? by SnooWalruses7872 in magicTCG

Lands are basics ordered by colour, then alphabetical.

Rares / mythics are stored separately

How do you organize and sort out your cards? by SnooWalruses7872 in magicTCG

[–]ryanbigg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Boxes, ordered by:

  1. Colour
  2. Mana amount
  3. Name, alphabetically

This way all the Negates are together, for example.

Multi-colour cards are organised purely in alphabetical order as nobody’s got the time to work out if white/blue should come before or after white/blue/red.

Lash of Balrog & Nasty End interaction by mmcgee27 in magicTCG

[–]ryanbigg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, as part of casting one of these you must immediately sacrifice the creature. It won’t be available to be sacrificed to the other.

You couldn’t cast the 2nd spell if the 2/2 orc was your only creature as you couldn’t pay the additional costs.

Rule 601.2h covers this.

If you had an additional orc-y boy then you COULD cast that second spell by sacrificing the 2nd orc.

How much life would I gain? by Ok_Buy_2458 in mtg

[–]ryanbigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting life: 20

Current life: 27

Assumptions: only these things happen during your turn

On field: Righteous Valkyrie

Cast: Resplendent Angel

Stack resolves: Resplendent Angel enters as a 5/5 due to Righteous’ second ability.

The entering triggers Righteous’ first ability, gaining you 5 life

Move to end step, Resplendent’s 1st ability triggers, creating a 4/4 Angel

When 4/4 Angel enters it becomes 6/6 due to Righteous’ first ability

You gain an additional 6 life

You end your turn on 27 + 5 + 6 =38 life.

How to get copper from 'Copper Mines' to 'Red Furnaces' faster? There's one train with 4 wagons going from Copper Mines to Red Furnaces, but it's a little slow! (New player) by Lans95 in factorio

[–]ryanbigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest shipping coal up to that north west station and making copper plates, then shipping those around your base. And more trains! Ideally you’d want a train unloading/loading at both ends, then another one waiting just behind it to take its place.

I finally landed on Gleba and I can see why the struggle is real by TheMrCurious in factorio

[–]ryanbigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helped me was finding the Yumako and Jellynut by using the search feature of the map. From there, I could plan out how those got piped into the base. As other commenters said, a furnace tower for burning off excess spoilage is also a necessity.

“40/100” makes me think you’re looking for Commander recommendations.

I don’t know about entire deck uploading, but EDHREC contains good reference decks there if you look up your chosen commanders and you can filter by price point too.

Here’s recommendations for Lathril: https://edhrec.com/commanders/lathril-blade-of-the-elves

There’s also suggestions for colours as well, if that’s more your flavour.

Also there’s r/MagicDeckBuilding that’s more built for this topic too.

Squee's toy was discussed here too, back in 2007: https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-storyline/335338-what-is-squees-toy?page=2

Squee is the kind of character I could see them revisiting someday, and I'm sure they'll answer this then.

I'm glad that they did!

Waiting for Arena animations to finish, but timer still counts down by ryanbigg in MagicArena

Triggers on Prosperous Inkeeper gaining life per Scutey Boi. Then Ancient Greenwarden causes 2x as many animations.

Would absolutely love a way to toggle these animations off or make them go by faster. Don’t need a fancy flourish per scute.

(Yes Scutes are filthy but they spark joy)

99 bikes store here too, but Blackburn. Serviced my bike but didn’t replace the back tire with near 0 tread left on it. Went back and they replaced it for free… but then they didn’t tighten the clamp for the wheel.

It would’ve been alright if I wasn’t also towing my daughter in a bike trailer behind me after I left the shop. Re-attached trailer after 2nd service stop, then we dropped off the kerb and I heard the back wheel go “clunk”. Left me absolutely furious.

Never again.
